Denmark was first organized as a unified state in the 10th century. Today its government is a constitutional monarchy. The unbroken line of Danish kings and queens is considered by many historians to be the world's oldest, from the Viking Gorm the Old, to the present Queen Margrethe II.

Queen Margrethe II, the second queen to reign over Denmark, is a very intelligent and talented woman who is much loved and respected by her citizens. She studied at five universities, majoring in both political science and archaeology. She currently has weekly briefings on national and international affairs. In addition, she is a skilled artist, having designed scenery and costumes for theatre and ballet productions. She has also illustrated several books, including an edition of the Lord of the Rings, published in 1997. Her personal correspondence with J.R.R.Tolkien became an important part of her involvement in art.
