"Jul" is
an old Nordic word for feast. In Denmark, Christmas
dinner is traditionally on Christmas Eve. It
is often roast goose, duck, or pork and potatoes,
with cooked red cabbage as an accompaniment.
A traditional appetizer or dessert is rice pudding
with fruit sauce. One "lucky almond" is
hidden in the dish of pudding, to be found by
one lucky person.
After dinner family and friends join hands to go around the Christmas tree,
singing Christmas carols and folk songs.
In our family, we always end with "Jeg Gik mig over s¿ og land," blowing
out the candles (lights) as Grandpa Sorensen pulls the plug! Grandma's
aebelskiver, or Danish pancake balls, were always a favorite on "Little
Christmas Eve" (Dec. 23), or sometimes on New Year's Eve.
