Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Tryphena Hoxsie GREENE was born 19 Aug 1827 (daughter of Hiram GREENE and Abigail JOHNSON); died 9 Jul 1866, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

Her gravestone has been photographed. Her surname has been spelled as Green and Greene, as has the name of the clergyman who married them, Caleb Green(e).

"Tryphena Greene-Johnson, daughter of Hiram, m. her second cousin, Philip Johnson [Philip, Philip, Ezekiel, EIizabeth Greene-Johnson, Usal Greene, John, John]. Their children have five strains of Greene blood. Harty Johnson-Whitford, m. Carmi Whitford. Philip R. Johnson. Has a son and a daughter." (source: "The Greene Family and its Branches" by Lora S. LaMance, Mayflower Pub Co.)

The following is a partial quote from "Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" pub. by Henry Ward, Sec'y, 1846, p 7: "Upon the petition of Abigail Greene of Coventry, A. Greene, in this State, guardian of the persons and estates of Tryphenia H. Greene and Benjamin Greene, minors, children of Hiram Greene, late of said Coventry, deceased, praying for the reasons therein stated, that . . . "

Tryphena married Philip JOHNSON, Jr. 25 Nov 1849, West Greenwich, RI. Philip (son of Philip JOHNSON, Sr. and Priscilla NICHOLS) was born 30 Mar 1822, Marion County, Ohio; died 30 Jun 1914, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

I have a photocopy of the original record from the official book of the Town of West Greenwich for 1851, p. 77. They were married on 25 Nov 1849 by Caleb Green, Minister of the Gospel, and the marriage was recorded by John James, Town Clerk, about a year and a half later. The minister, Elder Caleb Green(e) (elsewhere it is spelled with a final "e"), was married to Lucetta Nichols, daughter of Susanna Whitford and Ambrose Nichols.

    Children:
    1. Harty Potter JOHNSON was born 12 Apr 1850, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 27 Nov 1917, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

  1. 2.  Hiram GREENE was born 12 Jun 1807, Coventry, Kent County, RI (son of Benjamin GREENE and Harrietta Hettie Unknown); died 26 Oct 1829, RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

Apparently Hiram was married twice, but no marriage records for either marriage have been found.

According to Hiram's gravestone, he died in the 23rd year of his life.

    See the following quote:

"Hiram Greene, son of Judge Benjamin and grandson of Col. Isaac. His first wife's only son died at manhood. His second wife was Abigail Johnson of Greene descent. [Abigail, Daniel, Abigail Greene-Johnson, Usal Greene, John, John]. By her he had Tryphena and Benjamin. Hiram died, aged but 23, though twice married and the father of three children." The following is a partial quote from "Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" pub. by Henry Ward, Sec'y, 1846, p 7, January, 1846: "Upon the petition of Abigail Greene of Coventry, A. Greene, in this State, guardian of the persons and estates of Tryphenia H. Greene and Benjamin Greene, minors, children of Hiram Greene, late of said Coventry, deceased, praying for the reasons therein stated, that . . . "

Hiram married Abigail JOHNSON Abt 1826. Abigail (daughter of Daniel JOHNSON and Freelove ARNOLD) was born 25 Oct 1802, West Greenwich, RI; died 12 Sep 1856, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Abigail JOHNSON was born 25 Oct 1802, West Greenwich, RI (daughter of Daniel JOHNSON and Freelove ARNOLD); died 12 Sep 1856, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

The following is a partial quote from "Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" pub. by Henry Ward, Sec'y, 1846, p 7, January, 1846: "Upon the petition of Abigail Greene of Coventry, A. Some of our family info has her name as Abigail Matteson, but a couple of online genealogies at Rootsweb have her surname as Johnson, daughter of Daniel. If that is true, I have traced her ancestry. (This needs more research. I have not yet checked the death record at Coventry.) See Lora LaMance's book on the Greene family; she says Hiram's second wife was Abigail Johnson, d/o Daniel.

According to the above official document, she was Abigail Greene on or about January 1846.

The will of Daniel Johnson of West Greenwich dated 28 Nov 1833 mentions a wife named Freelove and a daughter named Abigail Greene. For this reason and the above evidence, I have placed Abigail in this family.

    Children:
    1. 1. Tryphena Hoxsie GREENE was born 19 Aug 1827; died 9 Jul 1866, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Benjamin GREENE was born Abt 1761 (son of Isaac GREENE and Mary WEAVER); died 8 Jan 1842; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

"Judge Benjamin Greene. Born Feb 1760 or 1764. Died Jan 4 or 14, 1842. (Records vary.) First wife, Sarah Brayton. By her he had Caleb, who m. Phebe Matteson, Hannah and Isaac. By second wife, Henriette, he had Sarah, Barbara and Hiram." (source: "The Greene Family and its Branches" by Lora S. LaMance, Mayflower Pub Co.)

Benjamin married Harrietta Hettie Unknown Abt 1799. Harrietta was born Abt 1774; died 16 May 1837; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Harrietta Hettie Unknown was born Abt 1774; died 16 May 1837; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.
    Children:
    1. Reuben Greene was born Abt 1800; died 12 Feb 1801.

    5. Mary Greene was born 19 Oct 1809.

  3. 6.  Daniel JOHNSON was born Abt 1770 (son of Ezekiel JOHNSON and Elizabeth GREENE); died Abt 1834.

    Notes:

He is likely the Daniel Johnson of West Greenwich, whose will was dated 28 Nov 1833, proved 31 Mar 1834. The will mentions Daniel's wife Freelove and the following children: Josiah A., James R., Arnold (dec'd), Freelove, Abigail Greene, and Sally Matteson; also a grandson Daniel, son of Arnold.

A family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows his wife as Freelove Burlingame. However, the death record of son Arnold at West Greenwich has Daniel's wife as Freelove Arnold (as per RIVR NS Vol 6 p 153; I have not viewed the original).

    See the following quote:

"Hiram Greene, son of Judge Benjamin and grandson of Col. Isaac. His first wife's only son died at manhood. His second wife was Abigail Johnson of Greene descent [Abigail, Daniel, Abigail Greene-Johnson, Usal Greene, John, John]. By her he had Tryphena and Benjamin. Hiram died, aged but 23, though twice married and the father of three children." (source: "The Greene Family and its Branches" by Lora S. LaMance, Mayflower Pub Co.)

See also notes for Daniel's daughter Abigail.

Daniel married Freelove ARNOLD Abt 1792. Freelove was born Abt 1770. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Freelove ARNOLD was born Abt 1770.

    Notes:

Daniel's will mentions a wife named Freelove. I am not sure her maiden name was Arnold, but based on the the fact that they had a son named Arnold, and that her maiden name is given as Arnold in RI Vital Records New Series, Vol 6 p 156, I have tentatively used that as her maiden name.

A family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows her as Freelove Burlingame. However, the death record of son Arnold at West Greenwich has Daniel's wife as Freelove Arnold (as per RIVR NS Vol 6 p 153; I have not viewed the original).

    Children:
    1. Arnold Johnson was born Abt 1793; died Bef Nov 1830.

    Notes:

"COL. ISAAC GREENE [Jas John John] Born Nov 6, 1724; m. Mary Weaver in 1754. One child died young. Only birth records of
Mehitable and Joseph. Abigail m. Oliver Wicks, and James m. Genevieve Case. One son alone leaves traceable line." (source: "The Greene Family and its Branches" by Lora S. LaMance, Mayflower Pub Co.)

Isaac married Mary WEAVER 20 Jun 1754, Coventry, RI. Mary was born 8 Apr 1726, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI; died Abt 16 Mar 1801. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary WEAVER was born 8 Apr 1726, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI; died Abt 16 Mar 1801.

    5. James Greene was born Abt 1765; died 20 Aug 1839; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Harkney Hill Rd., Coventry, RI.

  3. 12.  Ezekiel JOHNSON was born Abt 1731 (son of Elisha JOHNSON and Mary GREENE); died 9 Oct 1791; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

I have assumed that these dates from the RI Cemetery Database belong to this Ezekiel, because they are in the right time frame and the grave is in the right area.

Some genealogies show that Ezekiel married Elizabeth's sister, Abigail. It is a confusing puzzle that needs more research.

The will of Ezekiel Johnson, of Coventry, was dated 18 Apr 1789 and proved 7 Nov 1791. In it he mentions his wife Elizabeth, four sons, and four daughters, the last of which - at least - is under 18.

I have wondered if he had another son named Philip who died in 1785. There was a Philip Johnson who is noted in the Maple Root records as having died 13 July 1785. This might explain why Ezekiel Jr. had a son named Philip. Based on his age at death and place of burial (information from Linda Mathew), I am including him in this family group.

From Linda Mathew: "Ezekiel . . . when he made his [will] in 1789 left all of his real estate, undivided, to his sons Ezekiel, Edmund, and Daniel. Ezekiel, Sr., died in 1791 and the following year the brothers divided the land. Daniel received 50 acres in West Greenwich. Ezekiel and Edmund got the Coventry portions of their father's land, but Edmund sold his to Ezekiel a few years later when he moved to upstate New York."

Ezekiel married Elizabeth GREENE Abt 1754. Elizabeth (daughter of Uzal GREENE and Susannah HILL) was born 28 Jan 1735/36. [Group Sheet]

  4. 13.  Elizabeth GREENE was born 28 Jan 1735/36 (daughter of Uzal GREENE and Susannah HILL).

    Notes:

The name and birthdate of Elizabeth came from the database of Vicki Michael at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

    Children:
    1. Mary Marcy Johnson was born Abt 1754, RI; died 26 Jun 1834, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Levi Whitford Lot, Weaver Hill Rd., West Greenwich, RI.

    3. Susannah Johnson was born 1758.
    4. Ezekiel JOHNSON, Jr. was born 1760; died 15 Aug 1849, Coventry, RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.
    5. Philip Johnson was born Between 1761 and 1762; died 13 Jul 1785; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Harkney Hill Rd., Coventry, RI.
