William married Rebecka STRAIGHT Abt 1719. Rebecka (daughter of Henry STRAIGHT, Jr. and Hannah UNKNOWN) was born 27 Apr 1700. [Group Sheet]

Her father's will gives her name as Rebeckah. The book "Records of the Bailey Family" gives her date of birth as 27 Jan 1700.

Hugh Bailey was made a freeman of the Colony at Newport 2 May 1702. He came to East Greenwich from Newport sometime between 1696 and 1702. It has been reported that all of his children were by his first wife, Anna. His second wife was named Abigail Williams. However, the town records in East Greenwich suggest that he may have had a second wife named Ann, because while the birth entry for William says "eldest son of Hugh and Anna," the entry for Samuel says "eldest son of Hugh and Ann." The seven-year gap between the first two sons may allow for this possibility, also. Information on his family can be found in "The History of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, 1677-1960, With Related Genealogy" by Martha R. McPartland, p. 264; and in "Records of the Bailey Family" by Hannah C. (Bailey) Hopkins.

Hugh married Anna Unknown Between 1687 and 1695. Anna was born Abt 1667, Rhode Island; died 5 Feb 1720/21. [Group Sheet]

See East Greenwich will dated 5 Oct 1732, proved 4 Nov 1732. This names these sons and daughters. There were two younger children, Henry and Rebeckah, who died in early infancy. Subsequent children received the same names.

I have estimated his birth year, pending further research.

He probably married second to Mary Webb at Warwick, 1 Aug 1725. In this ceremony, Mary was wearing "only a shift," signifying that this was a "shift marriage" in which the woman's new spouse was protected from debts of her previous marriage because he could be held responsible only for what she held on her person.

Henry married Hannah UNKNOWN 13 Feb 1696/97, East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. Hannah died Between 1714 - 1725. [Group Sheet]

It has been suggested by one family historian that she was Hannah Tolman.

William married Grace PARSONS 26 Jun 1655, Portsmouth, RI. Grace (daughter of Hugh PARSONS, II and Mary Elizabeth LEWIS) was born 1636, Newport, RI; died 1679, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

Henry first appears in records at Portsmouth on 21 December 1667.

Henry's occupation was wheelwright.

Henry and family moved from Portsmouth to East Greenwich sometime around 1678. There he held several civic positions -- town constable, deputy to the RI General Assembly, and member of a grand jury.

His land, which previously had been awarded to Henry Brightman, was located on the south side of Middle Rd., near where it meets Carrs Pond Rd.
