    Notes:

    "My 5th Son & 14th Child being ye son of my Second Wife Mary was borne Aug 25 1707 on Monday Six Clock afternoon and we called his name Josiah In memory of his dearest [deceased?] brother Jos."

    Josiah was married the first time at age 17, but his wife died just over four years later, in Jan 1728/29. Then he remained single for 33 years until remarrying in 1761 at age 54. He had five children by this second marriage.

    Josiah married Lydia Gardiner 17 Nov 1724, Narragansett, RI. Lydia (daughter of William Gardner and Abigail Remington) was born 16 Feb 1707/08; died 22 Jan 1728/29. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Josiah was "of Jamestown, alias Conanicut," and Lydia was "of William, of Narragansett." They were married at the bride's home, and the minister was Lydia's brother-in-law.

    Notes:

    "Our Third Sonne was borne Decem 22 1646 about midnight, he was our Third child, & we named him Josiah in Memory of that good Josiah which purged the house of Israel of Idolity &c."

    Capt. Josias Arnold is mentioned in the will of his brother, Oliver.

    Josiah's will mentions two deceased wives, Sarah & Mary.

    The will of Abigail Almy, maiden name Remington, widow of Job Almy and previously widow of William Gardiner, was written 3 Apr 1762, and proved 11 Apr 1763 at South Kingstown, RI. The will was witnessed by Mary Chappell, Robert Stoddard, & Francis Willett. Abigail was the mother of Hannah (Gardiner) MacSparran, wife of Rev. James. (source note: RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 2, No. 3, p. 157)

    The will mentions sons John & Sylvester Gardner, daughter Abigail Robinson, and the following grandchildren: Josiah Arnold, Anstis Robinson, Abigail Updike, Abigail Stewart, & Mary Dockray.

    The date of 6 Mar 1763 is given for Abigail's death in some genealogies, but according to Jane Fletcher Fiske in "The Abigail Connection," that date of death belongs to another Abigail who married John Carr.

    Notes:

    Benedict was Governor of Rhode Island 1663-66, 1669-72, and 1677-78.

    From "Early Records of the Arnold Family" in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register: "We came from Providence with our family to Dwell at Newport in Rhode Island the 19th of November, Thursday in afternoon, & arrived ye same night. Ano. Domina 1651. . . my father and his family Sett Sayle from Dartmouth in Old England, the first of May, friday & Arrived In New England. June 24th Ano 1635. We came to Providence to Dwell the 20th of April, 1636. per me Bennedict Arnold."

    So, Benedict was 19 1/2 years old when he came to America with his family.

    Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart has John's date of birth as 12 March 1651.

    He became a freeman 30 April 1678.

    Abigail's parents were "of Haverhill, MA."

    She was the widow of John Remington when she married Henry Gardner (see notes for Henry!).

    The Rev. Dr. MacSparran in his diary (Sept 30th and Oct 4th 1744) speaks of the death of his wife's grandmother, at the great age of eighty-eight years.

    If Abigail was the daughter of Edward's second wife, Abigail, she must have been born after Edward who was born in 1658, son of Amey.
