  1. 1.  Norman Remington was born 4 Apr 1818, Monroe Co., NY (son of Daniel "Dan" Remington and Hannah Goff); died 7 May 1905, MI.

    Notes:

Norman lived in Macomb County & Lapeer County, MI. In the 1850 Federal Census, Norman & Polly are living at Ray, Macomb Co., MI, with their son "Reubin" and Norman's father "Dan." In 1870, they are still there, with four children: Reuben, Rufus, Almira, and Elwin/Elmer. Also in the home is Maria Remington, age 56, b NY. Probably this is Norman's sister-in-law, Mariah.

In 1880, Norman is living at Oregon, Lapeer Co., MI, with his daughter Palmyra and her husband Robert Metcalf and their three children. Elmer Remington, age 12, is also there.

  1. 2.  Daniel "Dan" Remington was born 1 Mar 1775, Suffield, Hartford County, CT (son of Elihu Remington, Sr. and Experience Hastings); died Abt 1871, Caro, MI.

    Notes:

According to notes in the Special Collections at NE Hist & Gen Soc, Dan Remington and his family went to Rush, Monroe Co., NY, in 1804 from Suffield, CT. At that time there was a colony formed consisting of families from CT, including Goff, Brainerd, Tupper, and others.

History of Niagara County, NY, pub 1878, p. 293, states that Dan Remington came to the home of his brother-in-law Charles Goff in Niagara Township in 1825. Later he removed to Michigan, settling in Macomb County, probably in 1836. (noted in same source as above)

This manuscript at NE Hist & Gen Soc has Dan's birth year as 1774; and says that he and Hannah had fourteen children, four of whom died young; however, only 9 are listed in the file; the list includes an Abner, a Justin, and a Jesse. However, I am not sure about the accuracy of these names in this family.

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Dan" Remington b CT is age 75, a farmer, living with his son Norman and family at Ray, Macomb Co., MI.

In 1860 Dan Remington is age 85 MA, a shoemaker, living with his son Joseph in Shelby, Macomb Co., MI.

I have not found him listed in the 1870 census.

According to the History of Macomb County, MI (Google Books), Daniel died at age 96, "from the effects of an injury in a sawmill from a flying slab."

Daniel married Hannah Goff 6 Sep 1801, Middle Haddam, CT. Hannah (daughter of Charles Goff and Deborah Hill) was born 11 Aug 1781, CT; died 28 Jan 1834, Washington, Macomb Co., MI. [Group Sheet]

On the 1870 Federal Census in Michigan, her son Norman gave her birthplace as CT.

    Notes:

He may be the Elder Joseph Hastings who witnessed the affadavit of Jabez Remington, 12 June 1776. Rev. Joseph Hastings founded the First Baptist Church of Suffield. Hastings Hill, part of Hill St. historic district, is named after the family.

"The establishment here of the earliest Baptist Church in Hartford County, and one of the earliest in the state, gives added significance to the site. The continuing rural circumambience and complete lack of intrusions give a sense of authenticity to this stretch of country road.

"Joseph Hastings spoke out against certain practices of the established Congregational Church in Suffield as early as 1740. He advocated greater freedom of thought and worship, and more involvement by men and women of the congregation in church affairs, with the result that in 1748 he and his group were formally considered no longer to be members of the Congregational Church. Hastings became an ordained Baptist minister and continued to provide leadership for his followers until, in 1769, they were able to erect their first church building on the triangular plot at the intersection of Hill Street, Spruce Street, and Russell Avenue, a comfortable distance of three miles from the town center, where they were not welcome. Settlers had lived along this ridge from the 17th century, calling the area Kent Hill. With the arrival of the church and the Hastings influence, the name was changed to Zion Hill and then to Hastings Hill. The first church in the triangle was built of wood. The second church, built across the street on the present site in 1793, was brick, and the present wood Greek Revival structure followed in 1846."
