Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Susan Remington was born Between 1849 and 1850, RI (daughter of Caleb B. Remington and Abby Jane Luther); died 25 Apr 1872; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Caleb B. Remington was born Between 1809 and 1813, RI (son of John Remington and Sarah "Sally" Paine); died Between 30 Apr 1889 and 5 Apr 1890, RI; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Caleb 37, Abby Jane 33, & Susan 1 are in Johnston, RI. Living with them is Elizabeth Hudson 52. In the 1880 Federal Census, Caleb & Abbie J. Remington are still residing in Johnston, RI. Their ages are given as 69 and 64.

He is identified as Caleb B. Remington in a division of his father's land, 12 April 1823, at Johnston, RI. Perhaps his middle name was Bussey, his maternal grandmother's maiden name.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows 3 wives for Caleb: Sarah Latham, Abigail Luther, and Abby Jane Unknown. However, the dates on the chart differ from these dates, which are from the RI Cemetery Database. Abby Jane is buried in the same cemetery as this Caleb. I don't know where Sarah is buried, I think Abby Jane is really Abigail Luther, as a witness on the probate records for Caleb is Addison Luther.

BSRs chart has Caleb's dates as follows: 5 Jan 1811 - 5 Apr 1890. The RI Cemetery Database has his date of death as 30 April 1889, while the RI Death Index says 5 April 1890, son of John & Sarah.

Caleb married Abby Jane Luther Abt 1850. Abby (daughter of Calvin Luther and Anna Colgrove) was born Between 1816 and 1823, RI; died Between 24 Oct 1902 and 31 Oct 1906; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Abby Jane Luther was born Between 1816 and 1823, RI (daughter of Calvin Luther and Anna Colgrove); died Between 24 Oct 1902 and 31 Oct 1906; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

Abby was the widow of John Bolster when she married Caleb. I have estimated the year of this marriage.

The RI Cemetery Database has an Abby Jane Remington buried in Cranston Historical Cemetery 2, with dates given as: c1823 - 31 Oct 1906. This must be the same individual. She is probably Abigail Luther, because a witness on the probate for Caleb is Addison Luther.

    Children:
    1. 1. Susan Remington was born Between 1849 and 1850, RI; died 25 Apr 1872; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Remington was born 20 May 1777 (son of Caleb Remington, Sr. and Roby Warner); died 9 Dec 1820, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

He may be the John Remington listed in the 1800 Federal Census at Johnston, RI. If so, I cannot account for the individuals in the household, as there appears to be an extra girl (3 under 10) and a boy age 10 - 15.

He appears to be the John Remington living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male under 10 (William), 1 male 16-25 (?), 1 male 26-44 (John), 3 females under 10 (Susan, Sarah, Harriet), 2 females 10-15 (Lydia, Phebe), and 1 female 26-44 (wife Sarah). He is listed next to Caleb Remington.

John married Sarah "Sally" Paine 28 Aug 1796, Johnston, RI. Sarah (daughter of Joseph Paine and Prudence Bussey) was born 19 Jun 1775; died 28 Aug 1830; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Sarah "Sally" Paine was born 19 Jun 1775 (daughter of Joseph Paine and Prudence Bussey); died 28 Aug 1830; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

The DAR lineage book has John's wife as Harriet Paine.

In the 1830 census, Sarah Remington is listed as a head of houshold in Johnston, next to brother-in-law Caleb Remington Jr. Her household is as follows: 1 male 10-15 (John P.), 1 male 20-30 (Caleb B. or William W.), 1 female 10-15 (Waity), and 1 female 50-60 (Sarah). One son may be living with her brother-in-law Caleb; see notes for him.

Calvin — Anna Colgrove. Anna was born 2 Apr 1785, Johnston, RI; died 23 Apr 1863, Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Anna Colgrove was born 2 Apr 1785, Johnston, RI; died 23 Apr 1863, Johnston, RI.
    Children:

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI (son of Joshua Remington and Elizabeth King); died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

Caleb was a Sergeant in the Revolution. According to a manuscript (Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots) at the Knight Library in Providence, Caleb served June 1775 - Aug 1780 in Capt. General's Cavaliers. It says he was buried on the Knapp place, next to the Hughes' residence, Hughesdale, Johnston, RI. (This manuscript is now at the RI Public Library, RI Collection)

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Caleb, sergeant, Providence County, all $120, rec $360, R. I. Militia, pl Oct. 24, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 86

I have estimated the birth years for some of Caleb's children.

There is a court document at the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, concerning $30 owed to Caleb Remington of Johnston, cooper & yeoman, by Henry Warner of Providence. The document is dated 10 January 1797. Perhaps Henry was a relative of Caleb's wife.

Capt. Caleb Remington was an innkeeper at Johnston. He also ran a blacksmith and coopering business. In 1808 he advertised his property and business for sale, with the intention of closing his business.

He appears to be living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male 10-15 (Stephen). 2 males 16-25 (Henry & ?), 1 male 45+ (Caleb), 2 females 10-15 (Elizabeth & ?), 2 females 16-25 (Roby Ann & Mary), and 1 female 45+ (wife Roby). The census was taken in August, and daughter Amy was married in April; so there are two unknown individuals listed.

In the 1830 census, he is likely the male age 80-90 living with Caleb Remington, Jr.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 6 Aug 1836: "Capt. Caleb Remington d. at Johnston, age 90, was in the Revolution."

Excerpt from "Club and Professional Life or Rhode Island" Vol. 1 pub. 1895 (at RI College library; copy at Roger Wms. Family Assoc.), article on Henry Adolphus Remington: "Capt. Caleb, of Johnston, Rhode Island, born 1748, served in the expedition to Rhode Island in 1778, under Capt. Benjamin Stack, and no braver heart ever fluttered in man than that which pulsated in the heart of this well-known revolutionary hero. Caleb Remington, of Johnston, was admitted as a master Mason of Manchester Lodge, Anthony, Rhode Island, Nov. 17th, 1809. The Remingtons were early settlers of Providence, Johnston and Cranston. One of the oldest houses now standing in the town of Johnston is the Remington farm house, which passed from Caleb, son of Capt. Caleb, father of Judge Remington, the pioneer Judge of the town, and is now in the possession of the only surviving member of the family, Miss Joanna Remington."

Caleb married Roby Warner Abt 1776. Roby (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs) was born 1755; died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Roby Warner was born 1755 (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs); died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

    Roby's parents were "of Cranston."
