    Notes:

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Dewitt is age 2, living with his parents, his grandmother Esther, and six aunts and uncles, some of them young children like he is. The family is living in McDonough Co., IL.

    In the 1880 Federal Census, DeWitt & Laura are living in Fairfield Precinct, Marion Co., OR, with their four children. They are next door to his uncle, Lafayette, and his family. It appears that the two work together in a sawmill business which Lafayette owns.

    Notes:

    Virgilious D. Remington appears to be living in McDonough Co., Illinois, in the 1850 Federal Census.

    In 1860 V.D. & Caroline Remington are at Hillsboro, Washington Co., OR. They have four children born in various states: Illinois, California, & Oregon.

    In 1870, the family is at Abiqua Precinct, Marion Co., Oregon: V.D. & Caroline, and (apparently) their four children. Son Dewitt Remington is also with them.

    In 1880 Virgilius D. & Clarinda D. Remington are living in Idaho Territory, with their son James. Also in the household are Elmer & Jerome. They are next door to son Comfort Remington and his wife.

    Virgilious married Caroline C. Tyrell 11 Feb 1847, Hancock Co., IL. Caroline was born Abt 1825, OH; died Aft Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    His middle name may have been Elmer or Elmore.

    Virgilius Remington is in the 1830 census at Fowler, Trumbull Co., Ohio.

    Virgilious was the sheriff of Carthage, Illinois, during the time when Mormons Joseph Smith and his brother were killed. Later, Virgil went to California during the 1849 Gold Rush. Perhaps that is why he is not at home in Illinois in the 1850 Federal Census.

    In 1850 he is living at Kelsey, Eldorado Co., CA. He is listed as age 48, b MA.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Ester Remington is age 43, living in McDonough Co., IL, with her children, including son Virgilious and his wife and their (assumed) son, Dewitt.

    In the 1880 Federal Census, Esther is a widow age 72, living at Silverton, Marion Co., OR, with son Elmer and his family.
