  1. 1.  John Sterry Nottage was born Abt 9 Jul 1826, Norwich, CT (son of George Longley Nottage, Sr. and Sarah "Sally" Smith Stevens); died 31 Aug 1896, East Providence, RI; was buried , North Burial Ground, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

His date of birth is difficult to read in the family Bible.

In the 1860 Federal Census, this family is living at Knightsville, Cranston, Providence, Co., RI. They are next door to George & Almira Nottage, so I am assuming John is their son.

Records show that John & Rebecca had a son stillborn 29 June 1863 at Cranston (familysearch.org).

In 1870 John & Rebecca have moved to Providence, RI, in the 9th Ward, as have also George & Almira.

In the RI State Census of 1885, John S. Nottage age 60 is in East Providence.

The following exceprt is from "The Seventh Regiment of RI Volunteers in the Civil War, 1862 - 1865" by William P. Hopkins, Snow & Farmham Printers, Providence, RI, 1903; p 405 [http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/article57.html]

JOHN S. NOTTAGE. Sergeant John Sterry Nottage was born in Norwich, Conn., July 9, 1826. He had two brothers and one or more sisters. His father was a tin and sheet iron worker and dealer in stoves. When two years of age or thereabouts, the family moved to Providence. Soon he was sent to a private school presided over by a Mrs. Hodges, and her daughter, Julia. Later he attended the public school on Summer Street, Mr. Weston teacher. When entering upon manhood he learned the carpenter's trade, but at length ventured on a three years' whaling voyage. While thus absent his mother died, which was ever a source of grief. He was wounded in the head at Spottsylvania May 13, 1864, and was sent to Portsmouth Grove Hospital, where he was retained as at attendant upon his invalid comrades until his discharge. His wife was an invalid for many years, and he was caring for her when his younger brother, Charles H. Nottage, who had been commissary sergeant of the Fourth Rhode Island, died about 1896. He had obtained little rest day or night for thirteen weeks, and his constitution became overtaxed. In May of that year he had two paralytic shocks that rendered him unconscious, and deprived him of the power of speech. It was, indeed, barely possible to swallow food. At last the third and fatal shock supervened.

John married Rebeckah Maria Beazley 31 Mar 1853, Providence, RI. Rebeckah (daughter of Edward T. Beasley and Almira Ellis King) was born Abt 1830, RI; died 22 Nov 1897. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

John & Rebeckah were married by George R. Darrow.

    Nottage, John L., and Rebecca Moses, March 31, 1853 6: 77 Vol. 2 Marriages 1851-1870

    Children:
    1. George Longley Nottage was born Jun 1854, Providence, RI; died 12 Jul 1935, CA.
    2. Edwin Augustus Nottage was born Abt 1857, RI.
    3. Eleanora A. Nottage was born 30 Apr 1859, Cranston, RI.

  1. 2.  George Longley Nottage, Sr. was born 12 Jul 1792, Boston, MA (son of Nathaniel Nottage and Olive "Olle" Burrill); died 17 Jun 1883, Elmwood, Providence, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

George L. Nottage and John Bezeley both witnessed a will in Cranston in 1848, for a singlewoman named Huldah Rose.

In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is living in Cranston: George L. Nottage 58 MA tin plate worker, Sarah L. 59 MA, Edward W. 30 MA tin plate worker, John S. 24 CT carpenter, Olive B. Tilden 22 RI, Francis P. Tilden 24 MA hatter, George N. Simmons 20 RI painter, Mary E. Simmons 19 RI, Charles H. Nottage 17 RI store clerk, Dorcas S. Nottage 29 RI, George E. Nottage 6 RI, Susan A. Nottage 4 RI, and Charity M. Nottage 2 RI.

The family is living next to the family of George W. Ellis, and near the family of John & Celia Beazely.

In 1860 the Nottage family is living at Knightsville, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. I have made an assumption that John S. is their son because he is living next door with his own family. It is possible that a daughter, Sarah L. Beazely age 21, is living in the household with her husband. Or, Sarah's husband may be the son of Almira, George's second wife.

In 1870 George L. & Almira Nottage are living at Providence, RI. Sarah L. Johnston, 29, is in the household.

According to a genealogy from Rosemarie Mello, the Nottage family are descendants of many famous personages among European royalty.

  2. 3.  Sarah "Sally" Smith Stevens was born 30 Mar 1791, Glocester, MA; died 18 Aug 1852, RI.

    Notes:

At the time of their marriage, George was of Boston and Sarah was of Cape Ann, Glocester, MA. They were married on a Saturday evening by the Rev. Doctor Baldwin.

Pastor Baldwin was "our beloved pastor of the Baptist church in Boston." He died 30 Aug 1825 in Waterville, Maine.

  1. 4.  Nathaniel Nottage was born 1755, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (son of Josiah Nottage and Jane Remote); died 29 Dec 1824, Boston, MA; was buried , Copps Hill Cemetery, Boston, MA.

    Notes:

According to the 1789 Boston City Directory, "Nathaniel Nuttage" was a house-wright.

Nathaniel may have married a second time: "In Boston, Mr. Nathaniel Nottage, aged 62, to Mrs. Harriet Witherbe, aged 29, after a courtship of 3 weeks and 6 days" (source: 23 March 1819 Rochester Telegraph). I am including this marriage here pending further confirmation.

I am not sure Nathaniel belongs to these parents (needs more research to confirm).

Nathaniel married Olive "Olle" Burrill 30 Oct 1780, Abington, MA. Olive (daughter of Thomas Burrill and Grace Gardner) was born 22 Jul 1760, Weymouth, MA; died 7 Feb 1800, Boston, MA. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Josiah Nottage was born Abt 1700; died Between 1755 and 1801, CA or MA.

    Notes:

It appears that Josiah's first marriage ended unhappily. Newspaper published in The Boston News-Letter, MA, January 11 1728:
"Whereas Elizabeth NOTTAGE, the wife of Josias NOTTAGE of Boston, Housewright, hath brought disgrace upon her husband, which hath occasion'd very unhappy differences between them, and upon which she has eloped from her said husband. These are therefore to desire all persons not to trust her with money or goods, for he shall not pay any such debts." (source: www.newspaperabstracts.com/)

Josias Nottage was admitted a member of the OId South Church, Boston, MA, 24 Feb 1744/45.

Josiah Nottage is listed in the following census dated July 1752: "A list of the Families of English, Swiss, etc. which have been settled in Nova Scotia since the year 1749, and who now are settlers in the places hereafter mentioned." Josiah is named as a family head in the South Suburbs, Halifax, Nova Scotia. The household consists of 3 males above age 16, 1 female above age 16, and 2 females under age 16, for a total of 6 individuals. This suggests that Josiah, his wife, 2 sons (>16) and 2 daughters(<16) were living there.

Josiah went from Boston to Halifax after the British conquered Canda. They returned between 1763 and 1765, either after Josiah's death, possibly related to a house fire, or after the fire.

Josiah married Jane Remote 12 Jan 1747/48, Boston, MA. Jane was born Abt 1724; died Aug 1801, Boston, MA. [Group Sheet]
