    In the 1920 Federal Census, Rosa Eaton is widowed, age 48, and a washerwoman, living in Vernal, UT. Four of her children are in the household: Hattie 22, Elmer 17, Merrill 11, & Lawrence 8.

    Notes:

    In the 1880 Federal Census at Ashley, Uintah, UT, the family is as follows: "Poter" Merrell, 32 b. IA, both parents b. CT; his wife Harriett, 27 b. UT, both parents b. NY; William P. 10; Rosalie 8; Josephus 6 (Josephine?); and Mary 3; children all born UT. They are living next to the family of Jerome 36 & Lydia Merrill. Most likely Porter & Jerome are brothers.

    Lydia & Fuller are missing in the census, and the ages of the children are not consistent with the birth dates as provided by Phyllis Elmore and others. Possibly the census taker was confused, or else compiled the data from memory or from a neighbor. Census takers are not infallible.

  1. 14.  Jerome Napoleon RemingtonJerome Napoleon Remington was born 27 Feb 1819, Rush, Genesee Co., NY (son of Joseph Remington and Sarah Fuller); died 10 Dec 1877, Paradise, UT.

    Notes:

    According to descendant Ward J. Roylance, Jerome Napoleon was named for Napoleon Bonaparte of France and his brother Jerome. Napoleon and his various family members were popular in America during this time, and many parents named their children after Napoleon, his brothers Jerome and Joseph, and his wife Maria.

    Jerome Remington suffered from asthma and therefore had ill health at various time during his life.

    Both orphaned, Jerome Remington & Lydia Badger migrated to Nebraska from Nauvoo, IL. They were married in NE and lived as pioneers there, later migrating to Utah in 1849/50.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Jerome & Lydia are living at Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory. They moved to Paradise, UT, in the fall of 1860.

    All individuals in this family group -- except those who died prior to 1880 -- have been located on the 1880 Federal Census.
