    Notes:

    In the 1880 Federal Census, Lafayette & Helen are living in Fairfield Precinct, Marion Co., OR, with their three children. They are next door to his nephew, DeWitt, and his family. It appears that the two relatives work together in a sawmill business which Lafayette owns.

    Notes from Melvina Wagner at Rootsweb's Remington message board: "Marquis DeLafayette Remington, b. Feb 2, 1847 in Macomb Prairie, IL, settled in the Woodburn, OR, area and invented a steam engine tractor, which was patented. That patent sold twice and is now owned by Catapillar Tractor Co."

    Lafayette married Helen Unknown Abt 1866. Helen was born Abt 1850, Illinois; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

  1. 8.  Virgilious Remington was born 6 Jun 1805, MA (son of Anthony Remington and Hannah Utter); died 15 Jan 1858, Roseville, Place Co., CA.

    Notes:

    His middle name may have been Elmer or Elmore.

    Virgilius Remington is in the 1830 census at Fowler, Trumbull Co., Ohio.

    Virgilious was the sheriff of Carthage, Illinois, during the time when Mormons Joseph Smith and his brother were killed. Later, Virgil went to California during the 1849 Gold Rush. Perhaps that is why he is not at home in Illinois in the 1850 Federal Census.

    In 1850 he is living at Kelsey, Eldorado Co., CA. He is listed as age 48, b MA.

    In the 1880 Federal Census, Esther is a widow age 72, living at Silverton, Marion Co., OR, with son Elmer and his family.
