Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Thomas Allen was born 1 Feb 1780, North Kingstown, RI (son of Samuel Allen and Prudence Bullock); died 14 Oct 1826, Albany, NY.

    Notes:

Thomas & Alice had 10 children, some of whom died young. They are listed in "The Tillinghasts in America, the First Four Generations" by Wayne G. Tillinghast, p 369 (pub RI Genealogical Society, 2006).

Thomas was in the shipping trade and had a sloop named Albany.

    Note from Edward Harold Allen:
"I would like to ask some of these living Allens in Quidnessett, RI, if they know about the problems of Thomas Allen, husband of Alice Tillinghast, who died in 1826 in Albany, NY. This Thomas Allen d 1826 was a failure as a husband and also a farmer. His father gave him the huge farm and he failed. So he went into the freight business with his sloop out of Allen's Harbor, in what is now Davisville, RI. He transported freight from RI to New Haven, New York City, and Albany. On one of these trips, he died in Albany, NY. His body was brought back to RI for burial in the Allen Cemetery on his farm in Quidnessett, RI. I have seen his gravestone. This Allen Cemetery is overgrown and the 1938 hurricane knocked over most of the gravestones.

"This Thomas Allen d 1826 took up with another woman [Honor Tourjee] and his wife, Alice Tillinghast, was not pleased. She divorced him with the help of George Tillinghast, a relative. This divorce went down in 1818. The splitting up of the farm was a mess. But Thomas Allen got one half of the farmhouse and he was living there in the 1820 federal census. Please let me know if any living Allens related to William Allen of Portsmouth, Prudence Island, and Barrington know about this situation or have heard about it. It must have been a big deal in the Allen and Tillinghast families of that time."

Thomas married Alice Tillinghast 9 May 1802, East Greenwich, RI. Alice (daughter of George Tillinghast and Mary Greene) was born 2 Aug 1778; died 20 Mar 1849. [Group Sheet]

  1. 8.  Thomas Allen, Sr. was born Abt 1692 (son of John Allen and Unknown Wife); died 1780.

    Notes:

On 18 June 1741 Thomas Allin of North Kingstown sold land in Portsmouth to Samuel Clark of Boston; witnessed by Ebenezer Allin of Prudence Island.

Some of the children's names are missing or partly missing from the North Kingstown records, so I may have switched two or three of them - specifically Ann & Mary.

The will of Thomas (of John) was dated 1778 NK, proved 1780; mentions wife Ann and children Christopher, Mary, Martha, Thomas dec'd, Samuel, Margaret, and others (names lost).

This family seems to be very confused in published and online genealogies.

Daniel Gould Allen, in his Genealogy of the Allen Family (Google Books), has this family group quite mixed up. He has Thomas born in 1708 and having his first child in 1717. Not possible.

Thomas may have married a second time; I have included this marriage for this particular Thomas:
ALLEN Thomas, of John, and Ann Corey, of John, dec.; m. by Jeremiah Gould, Justice, Sept. 4, 1756; NK.

Thomas married Ann Unknown Abt 1713. Ann was born Abt 1694; died Aft 28 Jan 1734/35. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Ann Unknown was born Abt 1694; died Aft 28 Jan 1734/35.

    Notes:

Some genealogies have her as Anne Corey, but there was a much later marriage of a Thomas Allen and Anne Corey.

Daniel Gould Allen in his Genealogy of the Allen Family says she is Anne or Annie Cory; on another page he identifies her as Mary Cory (p 91).

    Children:
    1. Margaret Allen was born 3 Aug 1714, North Kingstown, RI.
