From the website of the West Henrietta Baptist Church:
"Other families important to our church history began to arrive between 1815 and 1827 when the church worshiped in a log cabin on the river road. Alvah Remington came alone at 20 in 1817 and built a log cabin before marrying Mercy Gorton, the minister’s daughter. Alvah is memorialized in the stained glass window next to the piano. Among his grandsons were Harvey Remington, a prominent Rochester lawyer and judge who served on the boards of Colgate Rochester Divinity School and Fairport Baptist Home, and Frederic Remington, a well-known Rochester doctor."

    From "Biographies of Monroe County"
"Alvah Remington, the fourth son of Thomas Remington, was born in Rupert, VT, July 25, 1797. About the year 1817 he removed with his father's family to Henrietta, NY, settling on the farm upon which all of his children were born. He married Mercy Gorton, daughter of Rev. Thomas Gorton, a Baptist clergyman, September 30, 1819. Thomas Gorton was a descendant of Samuel Gorton, who was prominent in the early history of Rhode Island. The descendants of Thomas Gorton are very numerous in Western New York, Michigan and other Western states. (See record of Martin Family of Henrietta). Mercy Gorton was the mother of all of Alvah Remington's children and she died Oct. 17, 1847. He married a second time, September 3, 1848, Amy Northrup Foote, widow of Harvey Foote. Amy was the descendant of Stephen Northrup, one of the prominent early settlers of Rhode Island. She was an aunt of President George W. Northrup of Chicago and who was at one time a professor of the Rochester Theological seminary and pastor of the First Baptist Church. Alvah Remington was one of the early members of the whig party and later a republican and lifelong member of West Henrietta Baptist Church. He died in West Henrietta, N. Y., October 4, 1888." 1. 8.  Thomas Remington was born 4 Nov 1763, Suffield, Hartford Co., CT (son of Thomas Remington and Mary Remington); died 12 Aug 1821, West Henrietta, NY; was buried , Riverview Cemetery, Henrietta, NY.

    Notes:

Thomas and his family must have lived in Vermont for a while, because his son Silas was born at Rupert, VT, in 1792, according to Boyd Scott Remington's chart. Also, the 1860 census shows Thomas's birthplace as VT. The 1790 census lists Thomas Remington at Rupert (indexed at Ancestry.com as Bennington); the 1800 census shows Thomas & Silas "Remmington" at Rupert. They are the only Remington families there at the time. My assumption is that the Silas on the census is Thomas's brother, b. 1776.
