    Notes:

    The marriage record says Sanford is a broom maker age 24, born in Hatfield, son of Alvin Sanderson.

    In the Federal Census of 1860, Sanford R. and Eliza E. Sanford, ages 26 and 24, are living at Whately, Franklin Co., MA. Sanford is a broom maker.

    In the Massachusetts State Census of 1865, the family is at Hatfield, MA:

    In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is at Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA: Sanford 35, Eliza 34, Emma 9, and Nettie 3. Sanford is still a broom maker.

    In 1880 Sanford Sanderson is age 46, living in Hatfield, Hampshire Co., MA. His wife is Caroline, age 44. Sanford is a laborer.

    Sanford married Eliza Ellen Remington 16 Sep 1857, Deerfield, MA. Eliza (daughter of Benjamin F. Remington and Lydia Rice) was born 9 May 1836, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA; died 24 Feb 1925. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Is she the Ellen E. Sanderson age 56 widow living in Boston in 1900?

    Or, possibly she is Ellen R. Sanderson age 58, widow, living at Whately, Franklin Co., MA. However, according to the census that woman has had no children (??).

  1. 6.  Benjamin F. Remington was born 11 Jun 1799, MA (son of Benjamin Remington and Sarah "Sally" Seamans); died Aft 1 Jun 1860.

    He may be the Benjamin Remington, Jr., of Savoy who on 16 Apr 1836 had his name legally changed to Benjamin Franklin Remington. (I believe this is correct because he is named as Benj F. in his son Henry's marriage record.) It should be noted that John Remington of nearby North Adams, MA, also had a son named Benjamin Franklin Remington b1799.

    This Ben, Jr., may also be the Benjamin Franklin Remington who served the Baptist church in Savoy, as well as several others in Franklin County, as a Baptist minister from 1820 to 1855 (see p. 17 of the Remington genealogy compiled by Lois Remington Smith).

    For the present time, I am making an assumption that the census data for Benjamin & Lydia Remington, living in Savoy, MA, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses pertains to this particular Benjamin. In 1850 it appears that this family is living near Aaron & James Remington and their families, and their father Benjamin. It makes sense that this is their brother. The dates match, also.

    In 1850 Benjamin Remington is 50 and Lydia is 48. They have four children: Andrew 18, Ellen 16, Emma 13, & Franklin 10. I think their ages may not be precise, based on other evidence.

    In 1860 Benjamin F. Remington is 60 and Lydia is 57. Son Franklin B. is with them, age 15; as well as Martha J. Cowen, 34, tailoress.

    Note: Other than the four children found in the 1850 census, the names and dates for these children came from Pat Boyden's Remington genealogy, and have not as yet been verified by me.

    Notes:

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin is age 88 and living with his son Aaron and family in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. Next door is his son James and family. (Probable) son Benjamin and his family are nearby, too.

    According to Boyd Scott Remington's chart, Ben's parents lived in Cummington, MA. That is why I think his wife is Sarah Seamans, based on the marriage data. Otherwise, she married a different Benj. Remington.

    The death record at Savoy, MA, says Mr. Benjamin Remington died of old age at 94y 4m 9d.

    Benjamin married Sarah "Sally" Seamans 14 Feb 1793, Adams, MA. Sarah (daughter of Aaron Seamans and Lillis Unknown) was born 25 Feb 1766, Rehoboth, MA; died 29 Dec 1827. [Group Sheet]

    The marriage intention was dated 29 Nov 1792. The original marriage is at Adams, but it was also recorded at Cummington, MA.
