2901 I have not yet researched this marriage record, but I would guess Susannah's maiden name began with "B" because of the middle initial of two of her sons. (Briggs, Barber, Bowen ?) Unknown, Susannah (I10527)

2902 I have photographed her gravestone at Pawtuxet. Remington, Julia Ann (I04583)

2903 I have photographed Lydia's gravestone. Collins, Lydia (I04445)

2904 I have placed Betsey as this particular Joseph's wife, and these children as his children, based on his date of birth and his age in the various censuses; also, the location of their parents' birth in the 1880 census agrees. Therefore, I have made an assumption that this family belongs to this Joseph born 21 Dec 1798.

In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is living at Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY:
Joseph Remington 52 VT farmer
Betsey 43 VT
Gilbert 23 VT
Robert 20 VT
Albert 16 VT
Allen 11 VT

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is living at Hartford, Washington Co., NY:
Joseph Remington 61 VT farmer
Betsey 53 VT
Robert 30 VT
Albert 26 VT
Allen 21 VT
Ann 22 NY (possibly Albert's wife?)

In the 1870 Federal Census, the family is living at Fort Ann, Washington Co., NY:
Joseph Remington 71 VT farmer
Betsey 63 VT
Gilbert 43 VT
Robert 40 VT

In the 1880 Federal Census, they are living at South Bay, Washington Co., NY:
Joseph Remington 81 VT (MA/VT) farmer
Betsey 73 VT (CT/VT)
Robert 50 VT (VT/VT) (born without use of his limbs)
Remington, Joseph Jr. (I07984)

2905 I have placed Hannah in this family group based on her will and other confirming and suggesting evidence.

The will of Hannah Leavitt of Suffield, CT, is dated 3 Feb 1769, and approved 8 May 1769 at Hartford Co., CT (CT Wills and Probate Records 1690-1999, image online). To her eldest son Aseph and his wife, she leaves her "long blew riding hood and a lasecap." To kinswoman Hannah Remington she leaves her "black and white gound." To Sarah Alen she leaves a "calico gound." Son Enoch is to pay her sons Joseph and Samuel each 20 shillings worth of cattle or grain when they are are age 21. She names her loving brother Samuel Remington as executor.

The will was witnessed by Joseph Hastengs Jr., Thomas Remington, and Elizabeth Wilcutt Dunklee. A note at the bottom of the will states that at Hartford County Suffield April 1769 personally appeared and made oath the three witnesses.

The inventory of her estate was signed by Joseph Hastengs Jr. and Stephen Remington, 15 June 1769; the inventory was exhibited by Samuel Remington, executor.

If Hannah is indeed part of this family group, Thomas Remington mentioned as a witness must be her nephew, and Stephen is her brother. Joseph Hastings, Jr. is husband of Hannah's niece Sarah Remington.
Remington, Hannah (I28086)

2906 I have placed Joel in this family group based on a Remington genealgoy report from Pat Boyden.

Joel and his family are living at Waterbury, Washington Co., VT., in the 1850, 1860, 1870, & 1880 Federal Censuses.

In 1850 Joel & "Almira" are ages 31 & 32, and have a daughter Elvira, age 11. Also in the household are (presumed) in-laws Lyman & Sarah Hall, ages 67 & 65.

In 1860 Joel & Armina are 42 & 43, and have a son Homer E., age 7.

In 1870 Joel & Armina M. are 52 & 53, and it is noted that Armina is an invalid. Also in the household are Lyman & Sarah Hall, ages 86 & 82.

In 1880 Joel has remarried and has a wife named Rhoda. A stepdaughter, Minnie Rand, age 15, is with them.

One genealogy says he died 25 March 1891 at age 73.

2907 I have roughly estimated Aaron's year of birth. Vose, Aaron (I26181)

2908 I have roughly estimated Alice's year of birth.

Alice, our ancestor, was executed for witchcraft in Boston in 1650. She was the wife of Henry Lake. There is some information about her online at other web sites. Innocent Lake is a descendant of hers. The story is that Alice had had a baby who died, and was so overcome with grief that she kept seeing her baby and was tormented by this. It was alleged that she was being visited by a demon, and must be a witch. Complicating this circumstance was the problem that losing her baby also brought to her great feelings of guilt, because apparently she had had relations with another man before marriage and felt that she was being punished for that in the loss of her child. Rather than receive the help she needed, either repentance and forgiveness, or other good counsel and support from other women, she was caught up in the whole witchcraft scare and as result executed.

The following notes are from Alice Marie Beard's web site [http://members.aol.com/alicebeard/lake.html]:
BURR, George L. [editor]: Narratives of the Witchcraft Cases 1648-1706, 1914, Scribner's.
[Collection of old essays, collected and edited by Burr, a professor of medieval history at Cornell University.]
Quoting John HALE's "A Modest Enquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft," 1702, [one of Burr's selected narratives]:
Pages 408 & 409:
"Another that suffered on that account some time after, was a Dorchester Woman [in a note Burr makes it clear that Hale was speaking of Henry LAKE's wife]. And upon the day of her Execution Mr. THOMPSON, Minister at Brantry [Burr notes, Braintree, MA], and J.P. [Burr notes, probably John PHILLIPS of Dorchester according to Farmer**] her former Master took pains with her to bring her to repentance. And she utterly denyed her guilt of Witchcraft: yet justified God for bringing her to that punishment: for she had when a single woman played the harlot, and being with Child used means to destroy the fruit of her body to conceal her sin and shame, and although she did not effect it, yet she was a Murderer in the sight of God for her endeavours, and shewed great penitency for that sin; but owned nothing of the crime laid to her charge."
Page 409-410, note:
"In Hale's account there seems some confusion with the case of Mary Parsons." . . . "And two or three [women accused as witches] of Springfield, one of which confessed; and she said the occasion of her familiarity with Satan was this: She had lost a Child and was exceedingly discontented at it and longed; Oh that she might see her Child again! And at last the Devil in likeness of her Child came to her bed side and talked with her, and asked to come into the bed to her that night and several nights after, and so entred into covenant with Satan and became a Witch." . . . "This was the case of Mary Parsons and her husband Hugh, whom she accused (1651). See Drake, Annals of Witchcraft, pp.64-72, and especially the appended papers of Hugh Parson's case, pp.219-258. The originals of these papers are now in the New York Public Library. Others, from the Suffolk court file, are printed in the N.E. Hist. and Gen. Register," XXXV, 152-153.]
[**NOTE: Another researcher, Benjamin Lake Noyes, surmised that "J.P." was John POPE, husband of Alice POPE.]
Pages 408 & 409, note:
Burr quotes Nathaniel Mather as writing on Dec. 31, 1684, to his brother Increase talking about Alice LAKE; "H. LAKE's wife, of Dorchester, whom the devil drew in by appearing to her in the likenes, and acting the part of a child of hers then lately dead, on whom her heart was much set." BURR notes his source as "The Mather Papers."

2909 I have roughly estimated Amasa's year of birth. Hall, Amasa Sr. (I17584)

2910 I have roughly estimated Benedict's year of birth based on records as noted below.

In the 1810 census, Benedict is living in Warwick. He is listed next to Benjamin Remington. How are they related?

Benedict is living at East Greenwich, RI, in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Censuses. I am assuming he died there, as his will was proved there on 31 March 1849.

"Benedick Remington" is in the 1840 Federal Census as a Revolutionary War pensioner. On the census his age is given as 80. He must be the Benedict Remington "of Coventry" who enlisted in 1778, served in Col. Greene's and Col. Angell's regiments, for a total of about two years in the RI Line. According to the sworn testimony of Obediah Potter of East Greenwich, 21 Aug 1820, this Benedict was crippled in one leg. On 21 Aug 1820, he testified that he was 63 years old, and was of Coventry at that time. He was a basket maker by occupation, and owned some land in Voluntown. (see Rev. War Pension files at NARA or online)

His pension application mentions a wife 58 years old, and also a granddaughter, 7 years old, who is dependent on him for support. Possibly this was Betsey, b 1813, daughter of his deceased daughter Huldah.

Benedict's will, dated 21 Oct 1843, mentions three sons: Warren whose wife is Mahitabel Remington; son George Remington; and son Dexter Remington; also grandson Thomas Henry Remingon and granddaughter Sarah Remington, children of Dexter.

No one seems to know who Benedict's parents are. However, I was able to include him and his sons on the family tree through their connections to the Peirce, Rice, and Whitford families.

My guess is that he may have been a grandson of Jonathan Remington (c1702) & Lorana Arnold (1703), as their children were born in East Greenwich. I have no marriage info for their sons Caleb & Thomas; however, one of them may be Benedict's father.

Alternatively, his possible connection to Coventry suggests that he could be a son of Thomas & Lydia (Collins) Remington of Coventry, who were having their children during that time.

Or, perhaps he is a grandson of Daniel & Anne (Gorton) Remington; very little, if anything, is known about the marriages of some of their children.
Remington, Benedict (I13657)

2911 I have roughly estimated Benjamin's year of birth. Jenckes, Benjamin (I13710)

2912 I have roughly estimated Charles's year of birth.

I have made an assumption that Anna is his wife and Ezekiel his son, based on a gravestone at [findagrave.com].

In the Federal Census of 1840, Charles is listed as a family head at Parma, OH, next to E. Remington and household. Charles's household consists of the following: 1 male <5, 2 males 5<10, 2 males 10<15, 2 males 15<20, 1 male 30<40, and 1 female 30<40. The household next door, of E. Remington, consists of the following: 1 male 60<70, and 2 females 60<70.

The names of four of Charles's sons were given to me by Nanci Remington, a descendant.

See notes for Charles's father Ezekiel; in 1827 Ezekiel, Henry, Chancy, and Charles were living at Pittsfield, Lorain Co, OH.

2915 I have roughly estimated Elizabeth's birth year. Woodhead, Elizabeth (I13409)

2916 I have roughly estimated Elizabeth's birth year. Unknown, Elizabeth (I28992)

2917 I have roughly estimated Elizabeth's birth year. I have yet to discover who her parents were. She may very well have been related to Elizabeth Sheldon who married David Remington, Sr. Sheldon, Elizabeth (I15309)

2918 I have roughly estimated Elizabeth's year of birth. Percy, Elizabeth (I14133)

2919 I have roughly estimated Hannah's year of birth. Wickes, Hannah (I16241)

2920 I have roughly estimated Hannah's year of birth. Unknown, Hannah (I14141)

2921 I have roughly estimated Henry's year of birth.

"It is significant, moreover, that many children of accused witches went on to useful even successful lives. Thus, ... David LAKE, the younger son of Alice (convicted and executed at Dorchester in 1651) was a leading man in the town of Little Compton, Rhode Island." [source indicated: G. Andrews Moriarty's The Early Rhode Island Lakes, in The American Genealogist, XII, 17-24.]

Pages 301-302:
"The process of dispersal is a little easier to follow for the family of Alice LAKE, convicted and executed at Dorchester in about 1650. Her husband Henry moved away at once; his name appears regularly in the records of Portsmouth, RI, beginning in April 1651. Meanwhile the four LAKE children, all less than ten years old, remained in Dorchester. One, probably the youngest, was 'bound out' by the town meeting to a local family for a 'consideration' of 26 pounds--and was dead within two years. The other three were also placed in (separate) Dorchester households. At this point their trail becomes badly obscured. (One was living as a servant to an uncle--still in Dorchester--in 1659.) Later, having reached adulthood, the same three were found in Rhode Island--and then in Plymouth Colony, where their father had removed by 1673. It appears, therefore, that the family was eventually reunited, some two decades after the event that had broken it apart."

2922 I have roughly estimated her possible years of birth based on the date of marriage. Nichols, Hannah (I05409)

2923 I have roughly estimated his birth year based on the date of marriage. Hill, Captain Ebenezer (I05410)

2924 I have roughly estimated Job's year of birth (needs more research). Greene, Job (I12146)

2925 I have roughly estimated John's birth year.

According to the book Round, Rounds Genealogy (at Google Books), John and Abigail had the following children: John, Mary, David, Jabez, Johannah, Priscilla, Elizabeth, and Samuel.

John married 2nd to Mrs. Hannah Carde, Nov 1711.
Family F10797

2926 I have roughly estimated John's birth year.

According to the book Round, Rounds Genealogy (at Google Books), John and Elizabeth had the following children: John, Richard, George, Elizabeth, Ruth, Sarah, Susannah, and Judith.
Round, John (I28991)

2927 I have roughly estimated John's year of birth. Carr, John (I00515)

2928 I have roughly estimated John's year of birth. Information on John as a son of Joshua & Rhoda came to me from Ian Feavearyear.

Fall River vital records list the death of a John Elsbree on 17 Jan 1844, at age 38. It says he was a manufacturer and died of consumption. I have made an assumption that it is this individual, because the age is about right, and also his wife and children are without him in the 1850 census.

See notes for John's (presumed) second wife, Fanny.
Elsbree, John F. (I18731)

2929 I have roughly estimated Jonathan's birth year. Because he is not with Martha and Phebe in the 1860 census, I have assumed he died before then (needs more research to confirm). Remington, Jonathan R. (I26079)

2930 I have roughly estimated Joseph's year of birth.

Joseph & Sarah may have had another son born earlier, who died young (John, s/o Joseph, d. 29 July 1739, Providence).
Jenckes, Joseph (I14130)

2931 I have roughly estimated Joseph's year of birth. Manchester, Joseph (I17824)

2932 I have roughly estimated Joseph's year of birth. Northup, Joseph (I13906)

2933 I have roughly estimated Joseph's year of birth. He may be the Joseph Jenckes who died c. Sept 1818 in Terre Haute, IN. Jenckes, Joseph (I13705)

2934 I have roughly estimated Mariam's birth year. She may have been born later.

It has been said that Mariam & David went to Bartonsville, VT (needs more research).

David's third wife as shown on my family tree -- named Anne -- may actually be Mariam -- possibly a nickname (?). However, his first wife was Anna. One genealogy says that Mariam died c1835 at Johnston. David's will mentions his wife as Naomy.
Remington, Mariam (I08818)

2935 I have roughly estimated Martha's birth year. Simmons, Martha (I28600)

2936 I have roughly estimated Mary's birth year. It is not known if she is a first or second wife, but there is nothing in the wording of the will to suggest she not his first wife.

Ebenezer's wife may have been Mary Nichols, mentioned as a daughter and wife of Ebenezer Greene in the 1775 will of Rachel Gardiner. Rachel was the widow of John Nichols of Coventry who died abt May 1944; she married Capt. Samuel Gardiner.

Rachel Nichols, widow of John, of Coventry, md 28 June 1750 EG Capt. Samuel Gardner/Gardiner. I have not been able to determine accurately Rachel's maiden name.
Unknown, Mary (I28731)

2937 I have roughly estimated Mary's year of birth and marriage. Unknown, Mary (I08017)

2938 I have roughly estimated Mary's year of birth. Kinnecutt, Mary (I20757)

2939 I have roughly estimated Mary's year of birth. Northup, Mary (I13913)

2940 I have roughly estimated Meribah's year of birth.

As noted by genealogist John Redfern, Meribah and her brother Benjamin are mentioned in the 17 Feb 1812 will of Mary (Borden) Sherman of Tiverton.
Manchester, Meribah (I18939)

2941 I have roughly estimated Phebe's year of birth. Bowman, Phebe (I18447)

2942 I have roughly estimated Rebecca's year of birth; also, I have estimated the birth years for all these children. MEDBURY, Rebecca (I02049)

2943 I have roughly estimated Rose's year of birth. THORN, Rose (I16965)

2944 I have roughly estimated Sally's year of birth. Remington, Sally (I08446)

2945 I have roughly estimated Samuel's birth year. I don't know if Hannah Wilcox is the correct wife for Samuel, as I haven't found a marriage record or a will.

These four sons of Samuel were mentioned in the will of his father Jeremiah, dated 13 June 1728. I have very roughly estimated their birth years, as I don't know the birth year of Samuel or his year of marriage.
Clarke, Samuel (I27835)

2946 I have roughly estimated Samuel's year of birth. Gardiner, Samuel (I01598)

2947 I have roughly estimated Sarah's year of birth. Her age is rounded down to 50 in the 1841 census.

In 1851 Sarah Marshall is age 65, still living at 20 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Her occupation is given as seamer/pauper. with her are daughters Phoebe and Eliza, ages 45 and 23, and a granddaughter Harriett, 10. They appear to be living next door to Sarah's daughter Ann (Marshall) Slack and her family -- our ancestors. Also nearby are John & Mary Peet and family, no doubt related to Sarah; other families named Clay are near, somehow related to the Peet family, as one household includes a nephew named Richard Peet.
PEET, Sarah (I16830)

2948 I have roughly estimated Sylvester's year of birth. His surname is sometimes spelled Northrup.

Could this be his son, in the RI Cemetery Database? (needs research): NORTHUP, Sylvester A. 1839c - 12 MAR 1865, WK077
Northup, Sylvester III (I13250)

2949 I have roughly estimated Sylvester's year of birth. His surname is sometimes spelled Northrup. Northup, Sylvester II (I13248)

2950 I have roughly estimated the birth year of Ann. The marriage record identifies her as daughter of Nicholas & Frances Carr. Carr, Ann (I13933)
