5456 | Mary Havens could not have been the widow of Thomas Cook, Sr., according to Jane Fletcher Fiske in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register Vol 128 p 152. In her father's will of March 1680, she is named as Mary Cook, so it has been suggested that she was married to John Cook(e). | Havens, Mary (I26069)

However, Joshua Boomer's will mentions four sisters, including deceased sister Marcy Luther and the another sister Mary Elsbree. | BOOMER, Mary (I18119)

5475 | Mary is named as the wife of John Browning in her father's will. However, the gravestone data from the RI Cemetery Database names her as Mary J. Williams, w/o Frank A.. In the 1880 Federal Census at Warwick, RI, there is a Mary J. Browning, age 28 b. RI, a widowed dressmaker, living with her two sons: John L. 7 and William H. 4. Also with them are Alma W. Browning, widowed mother-in-law, and two other individuals: Irving Howard 19 RI, and William Potter 16 RI. This is probably Mary, daughter of John & Sarah. | Remington, Mary J. A. (I10921)

5480 | Mary Nichols was admitted as a member of Maple Root in 1816. One Greene genealogy has this Mary marrying three times: to Jonathan Joice, David Nichols, and Obed Harvey. However, Mary Greene is a very common name, and it may be that another Mary married one or two of those other men. The same genealogy says her parents were Elder Timothy Greene & Silence Rowlands, but I am not sure about that (needs more research to confirm). | GREENE, Mary (I01885)
5481 | Mary probably married Thomas Cook(e) as his second wife (he had a first wife Mary living 14 May 1660). See RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 9 No. 1, p. 2. This book also questions whether she ever was the wife of Samuel Wilbur, as shown in Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of RI. The identity of Mary second wife of Jeremiah is discussed in New England Historical and Genealogal Register Vol 128 p 152ff, by Jane Fletcher Fiske. In 1678 Mary was still the widow of Thomas when she took receipt from her stepson John Cooke for his legacy (see the above-noted source). She probably married Jeremiah Brown sometime in 1679, as their first child Samuel was born March 1680. She could not have been Mary Havens, as suggested by some, because William Havens mentions his daughter Mary Cook in his will dated 13 (or 30) March 1680. Also, on 31 March 1680 Jeremiah Brown and his wife Mary took receipt from Oliver and Phebe Arnold for Phebe's legacy from her grandfather Thomas Cooke; Phebe was son of Thomas Jr. (designated as III on my tree). so it is apparent that Mary Cook(e) who married Jeremiah Brown was the widow of Thomas, and that she could not have been the daughter of William Havens mentioned in his will. | Shearman, Mary (2) (I03358)

5500 | Mary was known as Polly. From Cranston Land Evidence 7-19, dated 25 Sept 1802: Charles Remington of Cranston, mariner, sold property to James Rhodes, merchant, for $750. The transaction included "one lot of land in Cranston in part called Pawtuxet." It was "bounded westerly on Main St., northerly by land of Remington Sheldon, and southerly on said Sheldon." This was sold "together with dwelling house -- barn & buildings -- was purchased by me of Rhodes Greene in April 1786" (should be 1796 -- note by Mary E. Rice) . . . "I, the said Polly Remington, wife of said Charles Remington, releases dower." (sic) This was signed by Charles Remington & Mary Remington, and witnessed by John A. Aborn & Patience Smith. Again, on 4 Dec 1805, a Cranston deed includes the following: "I, Mary or Polly Remington, wife of the above named Charles Remington, releases dower." It was signed by Charles and Polly Remington. From the records of the First Baptist Church of Providence, RI: Mrs. Mary Remington (date of membership or baptism?) Not known Nov. 16, 1806, L (letter?) to Pawtuxet church. W. of Charles. Notes from the Mary E. Rice Collection, concerning Cranston Land Evidence, deed bk #1 pp. 584 & 585, dated 17 Oct 1825: Mary C. Remington, widow of Charles, deceased late of said Cranston, mariner, and William Henry Aborn of Providence, merchant, and his wife Harriot Angeline Aborn . . . " The content concerned the release of all debts pertaining to the estate of Charles, also a release to Samuel Aborn Condy and wife Maria Frances. (Maria & Harriet were sisters, and daughters of Charles & Mary) The announcement of her death said she died "after 4 yrs. 6 mos. suffering." Her gravestone has this saying: [she died] "after 4 years and 6 months of suffering which she endured with calm resignation and solid hope of Heaven." The 2003 supplement to the book "Descendants of Roger Williams, Waterman and Winsor Lines" has her date of birth as 6 November 1776. Depending on whether she was born in 1770 or 1776, determines which of Stephen's wives was her mother. She did have a granddaughter named Phebe, but whether this is a clue that her mother was Phebe is debatable. | Smith, Mary "Polly" C. (I11193)
