5601 Much of my information on John Berry Hickman (here identified as John Hickman Berry) has come from Miles Files Version 7, compiled by Moody K. & Barry Miles and posted online at the website of Eastern Shore Public Library [http://www.espl.org/research.htm]. The family data there, added to what I already had researched, solved some mysteries in our Berry ancestral line.

"On 30 Sep 1850 in Accomack Co., VA, it was recorded that John Berry Hickman, who made a declaration before his Court on 28 Aug 1832, and John Berry Sr., whose will was admitted to probate on 31 Jul 1843, were one and the same person, and he was in the habit of indiscriminately signing his name as John Berry Hickman or John Berry Sr. It is certified that the following children of John Berry Hickman or John Berry Sr. are now living: Tinney Mears (formerly Tinney Berry), William P. Berry, Samuel Berry, Charles Berry, and Ann Lewis (formerly Ann Berry)."

"John was named as an heir on 11 Mar 1782 in Accomack Co., VA . . . he was [identified] as John Berry, alias Hickman, son of Sarah Hickman, and given 4 acres in the will of James Berry. At probate it was noted that there was no heir at law within the United States." (i.e. - he was the natural son of James Berry, but not a lawful son)

"John's will, dated 14 June 1843, bequeathed the following: $100 each to the 3 children of my son John Berry; my place where I now live to be divided into 5 lots or shares and distributed, one to my daughter Tinney Mears during her life and at her death to my other living children; one to son William Berry during his life . . . one to my daughter Ann Lewis during her life . . . one to the children of my son James Berry to be applied to their special use by their uncles William & Samuel Berry . . . one to the children of my son Charles Berry to be applied to their special use by their uncles William & Samuel Berry. Executors: sons William P. & Samuel Berry. Witnesses: William S. Hope, John H. Custis, Molly Lewis."

My research:

John Berry Hickman, VA Line, applied for a war pension in 1832 at Accomack Co., VA.

John B. Hickman, alias John Berry or John Berry Sr., was born c1763, according to statements made in his Revolutionary War Pension File (#18445). According to the file, John died on or about 25 June 1843.

In the Federal Census of 1810, "John Hickman of B" is listed in Accomack Co., VA. Next to him is Esther Holland; nearby are listed Ann Holland and Isaac Holland. It is possible that these individuals are related to Maria Holland, our ancestor who married John Berry Jr.

The Federal Census of 1820, "John B. Hickman" is listed at Accomack Co., VA. Robert Hickman is listed on the same page. John's household consists of 2 free white males 10<16, 1 free white male 16<26, 1 free white male 26<45, 1 free white male >45 (probably John himself), 1 free white female >45 (possibly John's wife), no slaves; 2 persons in the household were engaged in agriculture.

The Federal Census of 1830 shows his household as follows: 2 free white males 20<30, 1 free white male 70<80 (probably John himself), 1 free white female 15<20, and 1 free white female 20<30. From this data it would appear that his wife has died. Possibly the young woman is a daughter-in-law. They are listed next to a Stephen Hickman (no household data).

In 1840 "John B. Hickman" is still in Accomack Co; he is listed as a free white male 60-70; also in the household is a free white female 40-50. Other Hickmans listed in the county are Margaret, Henry, Samuel, Richard, William K., Edward, John, & Elizabeth.

5606 My information on Abigail's life came primarily from the writings of my great-grandmother Chafee (nee Mary Andrews). I followed this up with two visits to the vault at the Bristol Town Hall in Bristol, RI, where I located and photocopied the death record, which gave additional facts such as date of death, age at death, parents' names, and place of birth. It says that her family was Scotch-No. Irish, and that she was born in Scotland. Gr-Grandma thought "her people were from the north of Ireland."

Abigail married the widower of her sister Charlotte.

(Bristol official record book #5, p.39)

According to the 1840 and 1851 England censuses, Abigail was born in Ireland. A posting on the Wray forum at genealogy.com says she was from Clonkirk, Ireland.

Abby Edwards age 48 housekeeper and James Edwards age 17 cotton spinner are listed on the ship's manifest, arriving in New York City on 27 August 1855. They sailed from Liverpool on the ship Thornton.

5607 My Mom says:
Until I was about ten years old, the only heat we had as I remember was the kitchen stove. On Saturday nights we took our baths in a big tin tub such as we have in our back yard here. We had our hair washed and fine combed to see if we had acquired any critters during the week at school. My parents slept in a room off the kitchen, but the rest of us were upstairs in two bedrooms where there was no heat. I think we closed off the parlor most of the time. It was a very small house.

Mom noted in her birthday book that she was born on a Monday.

5608 My source for Sarah's birthdate, RI Vital Records New Series, Vol. 6, p. 10, and Vol. 7, p. 14, also says she may have been born Jan 1786. Arnold, Sarah Ann (I12988)

5609 My source for the name of Richard's wife is "The Rhode Island Atlas" by Marion I. Wright and Robert J. Sullivan, Providence: RI Publications Society, 1982, p. 148. Other sources do not have her name, so I am not sure how certain this is.

I have roughly estimated her birth year.

5623 Nathaniel and his first wife Sarah had three and possibly four children who all died young: Nathaniel 1746, Mary 1747, Nathaniel 1750, and possibly a twin born 1750. Family F07452

5624 Nathaniel and his first wife, Sarah Luther, were third cousins. They had four children, including a set of twins, but it appears that most or all of the children died young.

Nathaniel and his second wife, Eleanor Boomer, were first cousins.

Nathaniel lived in Swansea and was a member of the Baptist Church there. According to the church record books, Nathaniel & Eleanor were married 30 Nov 1751. However, the Swansea VRs give the date as 2 Jan 1752.
LUTHER, Nathaniel Jr. (I19667)

5625 Nathaniel came to America in 1634 with his parents on the ship Elizabeth & Dorcas. They settled at Hingham, MA. About 1645 Nathaniel married Bridget (m.n. unknown), probably a widow. He was a cooper and fisherman, and became Deacon of the Church at Hull, MA. In 1683 he and his family removed to Bristol, (now) RI. In the 1680s he built the first frame house in Bristol, on land he purchased on the east side of Hope Street just north of the bridge across Silver Creek. He became a citizen of Bristol at its first town meeting, and was the first Deacon of the first church formed in Bristol, the Congregational Church. (source: RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 14, p. 184)

The will of Nathaniel Bosworth, dated 15 March 1689, mentions wife Bridget; sons Nathaniel, Joseph, John, Jeremy, Bellamy, & Edward; and daughters Mary (poss. Lobdell), Mary (Jacob), & Bridget.

5627 Nathaniel Monday son of George was baptized as an "adult" at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wickford on 18 July 1819. It does not say how old he was. The church records also mention Captain George Monday and his wife Ann (baptized 1821), and daughters Elizabeth, Hannah, and Phebe, all baptized 2 Jan 1825. Ludowick and Daniel Updike were associated with this church in 1809.

George Munday and family are in the 1820 census at North Kingstown, RI. The family has 4 individuals: one male age 26-44, one female age 26-44, one male child under age 10, and one female child under age 10.

In 1840, George Munday and family are in Fall River, MA.

In the 1850 Census, they are still in Fall River: George Munday 60 (Nova Scotia?), Anna 59 RI, Hannah B. 27 RI, Phebe T. 26 RI, Lucy P. 21 RI; and George W. Whitaker 10 MA. George Munday is a clerk. His birthplace is not correct -- see his birth record in RI and death record in MA.

The death record at Fall River says he died at age 65 of lung fever. It gives his birthplace as RI, and names his parents as Nathaniel and Elizabeth, which agrees with his birth record.

5630 Nathaniel Ruggles is mentioned in the will of his uncle Nathaniel Hubbard. Ruggles, Nathaniel (I28631)

5631 Nathaniel's birth record identifies him as s/o John and Ann. I have made an assumption that this Nathaniel born in 1680 is also the one whose will is dated 5 Nov 1747 at Rehoboth, as below.

There are several individuals of the same name. Another Nathaniel Hubbard, merchant, died about April 1699 and his estate was probated in Boston in August of 1699 by William Clarke, at the request of his mother Sarah Ward of Mistick. So, he cannot be the son of John and Ann.

The will of Nathaniel Hubbard of Rehoboth is dated 5 November 1747, proved 17 March 1748. It mentions his wife Rebeka; sons John eldest, Nathaniel, and Leveritt; daughters Anne, Margaret (no surnames), and Elizabeth Mundy; also mentioned are grandsons William and Nathaniel Mundy, sons of daughter Elizabeth; his sisters Mary Ruggles dec'd, Rebeka Hart dec'd, and Anne; other relatives. (Bristol County, MA: Probate File Papers, 1686-1880, image viewable at AmericanAncestors.org)

I am not sure if his wife Rebeckah was the mother of any of his children. This needs more research. Nathaniel Hubbard Esq was married to Mrs. Rebecca Gore 20 Jan 1725 at Boston, but most, if not all, of his children seem to have been born before 1725.

Naming a son Leverett seems to confirm the link to Anne Leverett, Nathaniel's mother, and that he is indeed the one born in 1680 as above. Many historical sources agree.

See also North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000, Daniel Peirce and His Descendants, p 10 (ancestry.com), for more details on Nathaniel and his son Leverett (who married Anne Jaffrey Peirce).

Hon. Nathaniel Hubbard, Rebecca his wife, and Anna his sister, are listed as members of St. Michael's in Bristol (Rhode Island: Vital Records, 1636-1850, Bristol, Churches, Episcopal and Congregational, p 253). A notation says the "three came from Dedham."

The following notes are excerpted from genealogy.com, user trees (Robert G. Hubbard):
"Nathaniel was a preacher and teacher early in life, a land speculator, probably a merchant. In his will it states he had two slaves. It stated that, 'in his political dealings, he shone with particular luster. He was an active councilor.' His political appointments were as follows: Braintree HR in 1711, Braintree Council from 1737 to 1740 and 1742-1744, selectman in Braintree 1710-1711, selectman in Stoughton 1727-1728, JP 1713, 1715, 1728q, 1729, 1744q; Admiralty Court Deputy Judge, 1729 -1745; Superior Court of Judicature Judge 1746-1748.

"Nathaniel probably left the bench in 1747, which was also probably the year of his death at Bristol, in that part of the town which retains the Indian name of Poppy Squash, where may be seen his tombstone. He inherited his father's virtues, especially that amiable spirit of benevolence. (Note- according to the Records of Legislators of Mass. General Court, Nathaniel died in 1748). Nathaniel resided in Dorchester, MA from at least 1715 to 1723 where he was a minister. He presided over marriages there during that time period. He is also listed on the birth and death records of his children during this period as a lawyer. It appears he had lived previously in Braintree and that he moved to Stoughton after his stay in Dorchester and then moved again back to Braintree. Based upon the record of his admittance to the church in Bristol, RI, in 1741, it appears he lived in Dedham after his second stay in Braintree. He lived in Bristol, RI the rest of his life. In the marriage records of Dorchester that he presided over, he is referred to as 'ye worshipful Nathll. Hubbard, Esqr.' "

5637 Need to verify the following information from the "The Chaffee Genealogy," as some of it may pertain to Joseph's father:
Joseph was a native the Island of Guernsey, England, but had resided in London for some years. He arrived at Boston, Massachusetts Bay, in 1713 or 1718. He later settled at Seekonk, MA, near Providence, RI. There he was a brickmaker by trade. He died in England during a trip there to settle his affairs. His widow lived in Roxbury, MA, where she opened a school and is said to have taught French.

From "The Armington Family in America":
Joseph came to America with his parents and probably his sisters. After serving an apprenticeship as a brickmaker in Dorchester, MA, he went to Rehoboth, MA, and started his own business there. The inventory of his estate mentioned that he was in the process of building a brick school house when he died.

According to descendant Asa W. Armington, writing in 1846, Joseph died about 1747 of dysentery and was buried in the yard at Seekonk Meeting House.

5642 Nellie is in the 1880 Federal Census as N. R. Wolfendale with her infant son Harold, living in Providence, RI, with her parents.

Nellie P. Remington married Lewis N. Fidler, on 8 Feb 1887. As her maiden name was used for this second marriage, I am not sure whether she was divorced, or whether her first husband died.

The RI Cemetery Database has her date of birth as 22 April 1857. However, the Providence City Records have it recorded as 6 May 1857.

5645 Nelson's occupation was a miller, so he most likely took over his father's business, the flour mill.

Both Nelson and his son Harvey served in the Civil War.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Nelson 26, Mary H. 30, & Harvey B. Remington 1, are living at Colesville, Broome Co., NY. They are next to a family named Wykoff.

In 1860 the family is at Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. Nelson & Mary are ages 38 & 40. They have two children, Harvey B. 11 & Julia E. 8 (all b NY). Also in the same town are Seba Remington (presumably Nelson's brother) and his wife Julia.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Nelson apparently has remarried to Lucretia, and they are living at Franklin; with them is son Harvey 21. Nelson is 49 and Lucretia is 32.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Nelson Remington is age 58 NY, living with son Harvey & family at Hamden, Delaware Co., NY. Census data shows his parents as being born in Eng. & CT, but perhaps he said his father was born somewhere in "New England."

5646 New Bedford files (seamen's insurance records) show that Abner Remington b. Tiverton, RI, applied for insurance three times: on 16 Dec 1840 he was age 21, 5'4", and said to have a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; on 22 Nov 1848 he was age 28, 5' 4 3/4" and was described as having a light complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes. Another record dated 2 Dec 1848 again shows him to be age 28, but is described as having dark skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. One can only speculate why there are two applications so close together, and why he is described differently, even though the age and birthplace are the same. Two of the descriptions more or less agree.

Abner's last voyage on record ended in 1860, so he must have headed out to Michigan right after that. In the 1860 Federal Census, he is age 37, a sailor, and living at Fenton, MI, with brother William and his family. He was married in Michigan in 1863, and he is in the 1870 census for Fenton, Genesee County, MI, with his wife Eliza and two youngest daughters, Minnie 6 & Alice 2, apparently living next door to his nephew Eben and family.

In the 1860 census, Abner is also listed at New Bedford, MA, living with sister Phebe Pearce and three of her children. The census gives his age as 41, b RI.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Abner, Eliza, and daughter Alice (the second Alice), 8, are living at Mundy, Genesee Co., MI. Also in the household are Thomas Steel, age 4, stepson; and John Hunt, 20.

His obituary in The Fenton Independent:
"Abner Remington, age 80, a resident of Fenton about 50 years, died 6 March 1900 at the home of his nephew, Ebin Remington. Born in New Bedford, MA, during young manhood he was a sailor, making several trips to the whaling grounds. After retiring from the sea, he came to Fenton and purchased a farm in Mundy."

One genealogy at Rootsweb has his date of birth as 13 March 1820 (re: Kim Hawkins).
