The will also mentions 4 grandsons, all sons of Samuel: John, Audley, Samuel, and Daniel. There are no other Clarke grandsons mentioned. He does mention other grandchildren, children of his two deceased daughters. Notes from a family tree at ancestry.com (to be confirmed): "Jeremiah, son of Jeremiah Clarke, was born 1643, died January 16, 1729. In 1666 he was a freeman. In 1696-98-99-1700-01-02-03-04-05, he was deputy. He was ordained deacon of the Second Baptist Church in 1701. He deeded one-half of his lands in Providence and in Connecticut to his son James, September 17, 1691, and on the same date, the other half of the above lands to his son-in-law, Jeremiah Weeden, for three pounds, and the sum of three pounds annually during the life of Jeremiah and his wife Ann. He married Ann Audley, who died December 15, 1732. Children: Jeremiah, Henry, James, Samuel, Weston, Frances (born December 15, 1669), Mary (died 1756, married Jeremiah Weeden), Anne (born 1675), and Sarah (died 1729)." Note: the above can't be exactly correct, because Mary must be the deceased daughter in the above will, written in 1728. It appears that Mary had to have died before 13 June 1728. One family tree has Mary's sister Sarah marrying her brother-in-law Jeremiah Weeden, after Mary died. That would make more sense. Notes from "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol II", Page 176: John Tripp of Portsmouth, R. I., was born in 1610, and died 1678. He was one of the signers of the compact at Portsmouth, April 30, 1639. March 1, 1643, he was granted by the town three acres of land next to Thomas Gorton. On November 30, 1657, he was granted planting land on Hog Island for a period of seven years. He was an influential man in the community, occupying many offices of importance in his town and in the colony; for many years he was a member of the Town Council, and deputy to the General Assembly in 1648/54/55/58/61/62/63/64/66/67/68/69 and 72. In 1670/73/74 and 75 he was the assistant from Portsmouth. His wife was Mary Paine, daughter of Anthony and Rose of Portsmouth. His wife survived him and is mentioned in his will as Mary; she was the sole executrix of his will, dated December (or Oct) 6, 1677, and proved October 28 (or Sept 1), 1678. He left lands in Dartmouth, Portsmouth, Narragansett and Westerly to his children, and to each of his grand-children five shillings (to buy Bibles for them). His widow may have married a second time, April 4, 1682, to Benjamin Engell. Her father, Anthony Paine, died in 1650, and her mother married again, to a Mr. Weeden. From the Tripp Family Association website: John TRIPP The Founder was christened on 8 Sep 1611 in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, England. He died on 12 Feb 1678 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was born in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, England . . . By his own hand, he wrote that he had 11 brothers and sisters, so he evidently did not have much to start with. For that reason he indentured himself to Randall Holden so that he could learn the carpenter trade. He was admitted as an inhabitant of the island of Aquidneck, (Later Rhode Island), and on April 30, 1638 signed a compact with twenty-eight others . . . Death record: NICHOLSON Joseph, on board ship Elizabeth, Daniel Gould, Jr., master, from Barbadoes, June, 1693. The following notes may refer to this couple Joseph & Jane Nicholson (source: The Ecclesiastical History of New England Vol 2): There are several references in this book to a Joseph Nicholson and one mentions his wife as Jane. On or about 7 March 1660 JN "and wife" were examined at Boston (p 218). On 16 Oct 1660 Quakers in prison were allowed to board a ship and return to England -- refers to JN "and wife Jane" -- but they could not be accommodated so returned to prison (p 227). In 1660 JN and wife were "now in prison and had been banished on pain of death" and told they must depart from the Colony "by the next 4th day" (p 220) Around or after 4 July 1663 JN and other men visited Newcastle and were whipped at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, then allowed to depart. After visiting the meeting house in Dover, NH, they were taken to prison and detained a fortnight, then let go (p 324). In Dec 1663 JN and others were called "vagabond Quakers" in Salem, Boston, & Dedham (p 312). It's unclear where they actually were at that time -- whether they had already left and were being warned to never return (as did Mary Dyer, who had gone to RI, and she was killed because she returned into MA Bay territory). If we assume this all refers to the same JN, it seems that he was in the Boston/Salem area in 1660, then in New Hampshire in 1663. The dates and location of Joseph & Jane's children could place the family in this scenario. It is possible that they left MA and went to Barbados and Martinique, and later to Rhode Island. Lucy Arnold, d/o James and Sarah. His will is somewhat confusing because he mentions his wife as Sarah Rice. However, his daughter Sarah's (w/o Daniel Arnold) gravestone identifies her as the daughter of Josephus & Mary. He also mentions another daughter Sarah, deceased. Both Sarahs married an Arnold; however, one could not have died before the other was born, if the ages on the gravestone and in the will are correct. Could there have been a divorce, and he remarried to a Sarah, and had another daughter named Sarah? Or, perhaps his second wife already had a daughter Sarah, whom he adopted; or perhaps she was simply his stepdaughter and he included her in his will as a daughter. Josephus did have a daughter Abigail (Warwick VRs), and according to DAR records she married James Arnold and they had a daughter named Lucy b 30 June 1800, so perhaps the second daughter Sarah in his will should read Abigail. | Rice, Josephus (I02841)

"Thomas DURFEE (742) was born in 1643 in England. LDS Family Search Ancestral File indicates that he was born Oct 1643 in Portsmouth, RI, where he was also chistened. (AFN: 9M2P-N5 & film # 1760781) Bonnie Hubbard's material indicates that he was born in England in 1643. He died on 14 Jul 1712 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He was buried in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. (LDS Family Search Ancestral File, AFN: 9M2P-N5) IMMIGRANT - "The Durfee article in Boyer, p. 183, says that there were no Durfees in England before 1628 nor after 1723 and that they were probably French Huguenot. The first in America was Thomas, born in England in 1643. Family tradition (Reed) says he came to Portsmouth in 1660 and 'The recorded evidence of his appearing at the session of the Colonial General Assembly of Rhode Island, in October 1664, carries unmistakable proof of his presence in the Colony many months previous to that session.' The family wasn't admitting it even as late as 1902 but Boyer describes the proof: 'In 1664 the 'insoelent carriadge of Thomas Durfee with the sayd [Peter] Tallmans wife' was brought to the attention of the Rhode Island General Assembly {RCRI, 2:85], and on 3 May 1665 Peter Tallman was given a divorce from his wife as she admitted she had had a child 'begotten by another man' [RCRI, 2:123].' Thomas probably came as a redemptioner. Such a person was one who couldn't pay his passage and was sold at auction for the lowest term of years for which anyone would take him. Thomas was admitted a freeman of Portsmouth in 1673 and served on a petit jury in 1677. He was elected Constable for one year terms in 1687 and 1690. He was chosen one of the Overseers of the Poor in 1691 and made a Deputy that same year and again in 1694. He was elected to the town council in 1692 and again in 1694. It appears that the townspeople had forgiven if not forgotten his sin.
