- Apparently Jane was dependent on public aid; her name appears several times in the Exeter Town Council Records:
12 Jan 1754
"Whereas Jane Whitford daughter of Joseph Whitford dec is become chargable to town of Ex it was decided that North Kingstown is the town wherin (sic) the said Jane was last legally settled; thus ordered that said Jane Whitford be sent to NK."
14 May 1754
"Account of John Potter Town Sergent for L2 for conveying Jane Whitford to NK allowed."
9 Sep 1755
"John Baker to provide for Jane Whitford a good flannel gound & 2 flannel aprons."
9 Mar 1756
"Jane Whitford to be put to Joshua Gardner for 1 month at 15S/week."
13 Apr 1756
"Joshua Gardner offered to keep Jane Whitford for 15S/week; thus sd Jane to continue at sd Joshua Gardner's at 15S/week while she continues well."

"Account of Volentine (sic) Wightman for L3 6S for 6 days attendance at SK as an evidence in the case of Jane Whitford allowed . . . The account of Joshua Gardner for L25 for keeping Jane Whitford allowed."
