- This Knapp family needs more research.
The will of David Knap of Johnston was dated 8 Jan 1826 and proved 18 Sep 1830. It mentions his wife Naomy; three sons: Zachariah, Joseph, & Moses; and one daughter, Lydia, who is single.
I am not sure how many times this David Knapp was married -- see all notes for David and his supposed wives. It may be that there were two David Knapp Jrs and that this family data should be divided between the two.
A David Knapp of Warwick, son of David, married Anne Griffin of Exeter, d/o Isaac, at West Greenwich 8 Dec 1768. Could this be the same David Knapp? I have made an assumption here that it is the same David (needs more research to confirm). Therefore, I am not absolutely certain that both of these marriages belong to the same David Knapp. Could Mariam have been his first wife and Anne the second? I have not positively resolved this. It could even have been a second marriage for his father, who may have also been a son of David.
See notes for David's son Remington Knapp. It is confirmed that his mother is Mariam. However, I don't know exactly when Remington was born.
There are two possible children for David & "Anne" Knapp: Moses B. b 2 Sep 1798, and Patience b c1787 (md. Laban Tefft Apr 1807 Johnston). If this is the same couple that were married in 1768, then Mariam must have been his first wife, or else the wife of another David Knapp. Or, Anne could have been a nickname for Mariam, also. As an alternative, David could have had a third wife also named Anne.
In the Federal Census of 1830, a David Knapp is listed at Johnston, RI. In the household are 3 males age 30 < 40, one male 80 < 90, one female 30 < 40, and one female 60 < 70. I have assumed the elderly gentleman age 80 - 90 is this David Knapp. The female is probably his wife "Naomy" mentioned in his will.
The Knapp property was located on Central Avenue in Johnston, west of what is now Route 5/Atwood Ave. Mariam's brother Caleb Remington and family members are buried at "the Knapp place."
Again, please be advised that I am not absolutely sure of these marriages for David, or of the exact birthdates of the children, or of which children belong to which wife. I have pieced David's likely family together as best I can, given the data I have, along with additional data from family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect to fill in some gaps.
A question which remains is, is Mariam referred to in some of the vital records as Anne? Moses is identified as son of David & Anne, not David & Mariam.
