Notes |
- According to notes in the Special Collections at NE Hist Gen Soc, Joseph was one of the first settlers of Shelby Township, MI.
In 1850 he appears to be the Joseph Remington 34 and apparently single, a carpenter, living in Ray, Macomb Co., MI. However, a Joseph Remington, age 35 and married, also a carpenter, is living at Oakland, Oakland Co., MI; there his wife is Alvina and they have a daughter Caroline, 4. This may be the same Joseph listed twice, although the two listings have the exact same date of 13 Aug. Because of the census data in 1860, I am assuming that Alvina is a first wife for this Joseph, and that Caroline in 1850 is Carrie in 1860.
In 1860 he is age 42, a joiner, living at Shelby, MI. With him is Jane Remington 26 MI and Carrie Remington 14 MI; also with him is his father Dan Remington, age 85 (shoemaker, MA). Jane is probably a second wife. This needs more research.
In subsequent MI censuses there is a Joseph H. Remington who has a wife named Nancy J. and N. Jane; their ages and places of birth seem to fit this couple. They have a son named E. Lind born c 1861. Later, Lind J. Remington is married to Mary J. and has children Howard W., Carrie M., & Flossie O. With a daughter named Carrie, this may be a clue that this family belongs to Joseph, son of Dan, who had a daughter Carrie (needs more research to confirm).
A family tree at Ancestry.com has Joseph Hile Remington as married to Nancy Jane Naramour. At the present time I am making an assumption that this is the correct couple for this particular Joseph. Other than the above census evidence, I have not personally confirmed this.
I am wondering if his middle name should be Hill? Hannah Goff's mother was Deborah Hill.
