- In the 1860 Federal Census, Searles is listed as living with his parents and sister Eunice, at West Greenwich, RI. He is married, but his 18-year-old wife, Susan, is listed with her (assumed parents), James & Lois Ann Greene.
In the 1870 Federal Census, Searles, Susan, and their daughter Evangeline are still living at West Greenwich.
The following information is from "In the Shadow of the Trees" by Mathias P. Harpin & Waite Albro, p. 120 ff (pub by Pawtuxet Valley Preservation & Historical Society, 2000):
Searles Capwell was the largest lumber dealer in Rhode Island, if not New England. In 1900 he was taxed [by West Greenwich] for 37 individual pieces of property, farms and woodlots. He was also co-owner with Alanson Albro, his son-in-law, of 6 more lots, and another with Kilton Walker. He also owned property and a mill in Coventry; he owned all the property on Capwell Ave. in Anthony, and several houses on Pilgrim Ave./Station St.
The above book has the year of birth as 1838, while the obituary says 1837. I have not checked the records at town hall. RI Cemetery Database has 1838.
Searles Capwell was a Representative from West Greenwich to the RI General Assembly. After he moved to the village of Anthony in Coventry, he served as President of the Town Council of Coventry.
He was active in the Knotty Oak Baptist Church, Coventry, RI.
