  1. 1.  Jeremiah Clarke was born Abt 1643; died Abt 16 Jan 1728/29, Newport, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

    The will of Jeremiah Clarke of Newport, yeoman, dated 13 June 1728 (codicil 9 Jan 1729), and proved 3 Feb 1728/9, mentions his wife Anne; 5 sons as follows: Weston, James, Samuel deceased, Jeremiah, and Henry; and (probably) 4 daughters: Unnamed Weeden deceased, Anne Greenman, Sarah Weeden, and Frances Sanford deceased. The will also mentions 4 grandsons, all sons of Samuel: John, Audley, Samuel, and Daniel. There are no other Clarke grandsons mentioned. He does mention other grandchildren, children of his two deceased daughters.

    "Jeremiah, son of Jeremiah Clarke, was born 1643, died January 16, 1729. In 1666 he was a freeman. In 1696-98-99-1700-01-02-03-04-05, he was deputy. He was ordained deacon of the Second Baptist Church in 1701. He deeded one-half of his lands in Providence and in Connecticut to his son James, September 17, 1691, and on the same date, the other half of the above lands to his son-in-law, Jeremiah Weeden, for three pounds, and the sum of three pounds annually during the life of Jeremiah and his wife Ann. He married Ann Audley, who died December 15, 1732. Children: Jeremiah, Henry, James, Samuel, Weston, Frances (born December 15, 1669), Mary (died 1756, married Jeremiah Weeden), Anne (born 1675), and Sarah (died 1729)."

    Note: the above can't be exactly correct, because Mary must be the deceased daughter in the above will, written in 1728. It appears that Mary had to have died before 13 June 1728. One family tree has Mary's sister Sarah marrying her brother-in-law Jeremiah Weeden, after Mary died. That would make more sense. I believed it means to say that Jeremiah Weeden died in 1756.

    Notes:

    I have roughly estimated Samuel's birth year. I don't know if Hannah Wilcox is the correct wife for Samuel, as I haven't found a marriage record or a will.

    These four sons of Samuel were mentioned in the will of his father Jeremiah, dated 13 June 1728. I have very roughly estimated their birth years, as I don't know the birth year of Samuel or his year of marriage.

    Samuel married Hannah Wilcox Abt 1695. Hannah was born Abt 1674. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    The will of Henry Clarke (possible or likely son of Jeremiah above) of Newport, weaver, is dated 7 June 1742 and proved 7 Nov 1743. He mentions wife named Judith; two sons: William and James deceased, and 3 daughters: Ann Pike (whose son is Clarke Pike), Hannah Moore, and Judith Hubbard. Witnesses were Jeremiah Weeden, Joseph Weeden, and John Greene. The only aspect of this will that might link Henry to Jeremiah above, are the two witnesses surnamed Weedon - possibly brothers-in-law.

    Notes:

    He might be the John Clarke who married Priscilla Barker 29 Aug 1728 Newport -- but this needs more research to confirm.

    There is also a marriage of John Clerk to Abigail Coggeshall, 1 March 1721/22 Newport. This is another possibility.

    There was also a couple named John & Mary Clarke who had a son John born 1733, Newport.

    According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, Abigail and Mary were both wives of this Samuel. This seems to be confirmed by gravestones in the Common Buring Ground, Newport. Consequently, I am adding them to this tree. However, I still am not positive that this particular John Clark with these two wives belongs to Audley.

    Notes:

    Capt. Audley Clarke, son of Capt. Audley Clarke, was born c1739 and died 1 Jan 1771 (gravestone in Newport Common Burying Ground).

    He may be the Audley Clarke of Newport, mariner, whose will was dated June 1771 (maybe was really Jan but misread?); it mentions a wife (unnamed) but no children.

    Was this his wife: Margaret Clarke wife of Audley was born c1732 and died 1 Nov 1784, buried Newport, no husband's stone there? Maybe there are probate records in Newport that would clarify this.

    Note that I am not sure this marriage to Margaret Howland belongs to this particular Audley.
