The will of Thomas Cook, dated 6 Feb 1674 at Portsmouth, mentions a Penellope Parker under age 18, daughter of Peter & Sarah (prob. Cook) Parker. She would have been born after 1656. Also, an estate settlement of Peter Parker, d. 3 Oct 1727 Westerly, mentions a daughter Penelope.

Sarah, under 18 daughter of Peter & Sarah (Cook ?) Parker, was mentioned in the 3 Oct 1727 Portsmouth will of Thomas Cook. It was her sister Penelope who married Daniel's brother Stephen.

The birth record at Jamestown says she was the "1st daughter of Stephen & Penellopy, born 29 (?) Sept 1686 at Narragansett." The numbers are difficult to read.

The original birth record at Jamestown reads: "Gershum Remmenton sun of Stephen & Pennelipy 3 December 1690."

Land records show Gershom Remington signing transactions with his wife, Clemence, on 31 Dec 1733. Some genealogists have her name as Catherine. Was Catherine a second wife; or, perhaps simply the name was misread (?).

In 1735 Gershom was Ensign of the Militia for Jamestown, and later was promoted to Lieutenant on the resignation of William Battey; again he served in this position in 1736.

Was there another daughter named Aase or Acie? Here is this listing from the RI Cemetery Database:

Jamestown town records identify Stephen as the 2nd son of Stephen & Pennelipy, born 29 Martch 1696.

According to the book "Remington Family" compiled by genealogist Martha A. Benns, there were two Stephen Remingtons, apparently both born around the same time -- one a son of Thomas & Mary (Allen) Remington of Warwick, and the other a son of Stephen & Penelope Remington of Jamestown, RI. The first one is mentioned in his father's will; the birth of the second is recorded at Jamestown. A Stephen Remington witnessed a 1762 Jamestown will along with Gershom Remington, Jr., possibly his nephew. Also, according to James N. Arnold, a Stephen & Clemence Remington had a daughter, Dinah, recorded in the Jamestown vital records (this may be a clerk's or transcriber's error -- needs more research; probably was Gershom & Clemence). A Cranston will was witnessed by a Stephen Remington in 1751; was this the other Stephen, son of Thomas & Mary? Probably.

Which is the one who married Lydia Rhodes, daughter of Peleg? And, which is the one who married Mercy Fenner, widow of Thomas? Or, were they the same Stephen? I believe not.

I am confused about Martha Benns's data showing the Stephen of Jamestown marrying Mrs. Fenner. She is in the RI Cemetery Database, but not he. Her grave is in Warwick Historical Cemetery #3, in Pawtuxet, off Post Road. At the present time, I am placing Mercy with the other Stephen, of Warwick, which seems more logical. Other research seems to confirm this.

Also, in 1762 a Stephen Remington was ensign, against Canada, of the Militia Company for Jamestown. This may have been the son of Stephen & Penelope, although he would have been age 66. If there was a younger Stephen in Jamestown at this time, I have not yet discovered his identity. However, there may well be significant gaps in our information on the Remington families of Jamestown.

Elsewhere his birth date is given as 28 Dec 1689. The Jamestown vital records give the date as Dec. 28, no year. His name is written as "Dan."

Is this "Alice," as some researchers have transcribed her name, or is it Ases or Asa or Acie? Very possibly she was named for her father's mother, Abigail Acey/Acie.

The original record at Jamestown says Ases (p. 1 of Jamestown Proprietors Records, Vol. I). It also says that she was the 4th daughter born to Stephen & "Penelaty." The exact date is illegible: 16__ _______ber 28th day.

This is an estimate of John's date of birth. I have placed him in this family group primarily on the basis of the names of his children, which clearly seem to reflect Penelope Parker and her parents. I have found a birth record for neither John nor his presumed sister Hannah, but in her case the marriage record identifies her parents.

I am not absolutely sure that Susannah & Abigail were two wives of the same John Remington, but it is a reasonable assumption based on the Jamestown records, which admittedly are confusing at points.

Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart lists another child, Peleg, in this family group; but that may just be a guess, as Peleg is not in the vital records. BSR gives no date of birth for Peleg, but as his marriage was in 1772, he could possibly fit into this family group. Unfortunately, BSR notes no sources.

Alden G. Beaman gives her date of birth as 3 March 1686, as does the book "Descendants of Roger Williams," Book III, Sayles Line, p. 24. The exact date is not legible in the original Jamestown records (p. 14). It reads: "Abigail Remington daughter of Daniel born March 1686."

Abigail Remington, daughter of Daniel Remington, is mentioned as a kinswoman of Phebe Arnold in the 1697 will of Oliver Arnold of "Conenicut Island." Oliver's wife, Phebe (Cooke) Arnold, was Abigail's great aunt, sister of her maternal grandmother, Sarah (Cooke) Parker.

Some genealogies use the date of death, 6 Mar 1763, for another Abigail Remington, the one who married William Gardiner.

In the original Jametown birth records he is identified as the "1st son of Gersham & Clemence." The month is unclear (Feb?) and the day appears to be 5th, although others have tranbscribed it as 3rd.

According to his gravestone data, he died at age 31. His wife's age at death is given as 29. Why did they both die young?

He was a freeman and a Captain in the Jamestown Militia in April 1744.

Although I have not found a birth record for Phebe, the marriage record at Jamestown identifies the bride as Phebe Remington, of Gershom & Clemence, of Jamestown.

I am making an assumption that this John Remington belongs in this family group, solely based on the names and dates of his children. (But note: this needs further research. At the present time I can not see any other family in which he would fit.)

Some of John's descendants -- as far as can be determined -- are buried in the Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. A stone there refers to John Remington 1680 - 1745. But if this John who married Mary is the son of John b1680, why do the names of his children reflect the ancestry of Gershom & Clemence?

BSR says he moved from Jamestown in 1756.

This note may pertain to this John Remington: Newport Mercury 30 Oct 1915, historical note from 31 Jul 1769 - "John Remington carries on shoe making for Elizabeth Mumford, wido, in New Lane."

BSR has his date of death as 06 December 1809.

I am including Stephen as a son in this family group solely on the basis of the Revolutionary Pension File of Tiddeman Remington. A letter in this file states that Tiddeman served three months of his enlistment time on behalf of his uncle Stephen Remington. However, I can not see exactly where Tiddeman states that Stephen was his uncle, but the letter, written later, says this. Something may be missing from the published file.

Could he be the Stephen Remington who was an Ensign at Jamestown and married Sarah Nichols? (see note at Newport Historical Society)

I am assuming that Gershom Remington, Jr. is a son of Gershom Remington, although he could be just a younger Gershom in the community, son of another Remington. He witnessed the 1762 codicil to the will of John Hull, and the 1771 will of John Martin, father of Hannah (Martin) Remington, wife of Benjamin. He also was mentioned as "Uncle Gershom Remington, Jr." in the 1773 will of Gershom Franklin (son of Mary Franklin) who was headed out to sea on a voyage (Gershom, Jr. had a sister Mary who married George Franklin).

The 1777 RI Military Census lists Gershom Remington, age 16 - 50 A, of East Greenwich.

The Newport Mercury of 17 Apr 1784 reported the marriage of Gresham Remington & Mary Hull, widow, at Jamestown. So, this is a second marriage for Mary. One online source refers to her as Mary Martin, which may well be her maiden name.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 5 Jan 1793: "Gersham Remington, d. in Jamestown." I am assuming this notice is for this particular Gershom Remington. Apparently he died of smallpox -- see notice below.

I am not sure whether or not this Jonathan belongs in this family, or whether this marriage to Mary Thurston belongs to him. A marriage in a newspaper said that Jonathan was s/o Jonathan & Susannah of East Greenwich. It could have meant Jonathan & Lorana (Susana); or it could have meant John & Susannah, with the son himself being of East Greenwich.

I have placed Jonathan and this marriage here, pending further research.

Newenglandancestors.org, Vital Records of Jamestown, has his birth date as 19 Sep 1733.

DAR membership file #750866 (Christine Welch Lindsey) has Benjamin's dob as 17 Apr 1733.

Benjamin & Hannah lived in Jamestown. He was a captain in the Revolutionary War, and two of his houses were burned by the British, 10 Dec 1775 and 19 Aug 1780.

The Providence Gazette of 30 Sept 1820 reported the death of Capt. Benjamin Remington, age 84, at Jamestown.

There is a note in the archives at The RI Historical Society Library which mentions a voyage of Capt. Benj. Remington of Jamestown to the coast of Africa for slaves. The note is not dated, but this may refer to this particular Benjamin: (Mss 9006 Shepley Collection Updike, Daniel Rhode Island Accounts n.d. [c. 1756] Volume 15, page 73: One page of accounts with no date contains the note, "the within act. I supose was Capt. Benjamin Remington's of Jamestown, R.I. while on a voyage to the coast of Affrica for slaves.")

Boyd Scott Remington's chart has his dates of birth and death as: 19 Sept 1733 - 30 Sept 1820. However, if it was reported in the newspaper on 30 Sept, he probably died before then.

BSR also lists a Sarah & Mary among the children of Benjamin & Hannah. See notes for Sally.

The marriage entry identifies Abigail as d/o Capt. John dec'd and Abigail. However, I have wondered if she might really be a child of Susannah, John's first wife. She is not named as a granddaughter in the will of David Greene.

I am not absolutely sure that this date of death, or this spouse and children, belong to John Remington, son of John & Susanna. However, the family group was from Newport, which is just a short boat ride across the water from Jamestown, home of John & Susanna and their Remington forebears. Also, the names of at least three of the children (Benjamin, Abigail, Peter) reflect the names of the children and Remington forebears of John & Susanna. Lastly, the dates for both John & Sarah from the RI Cemetery database seem to coincide with the date of birth we have for John, and the marriage date of 1772.

I am not absolutely sure of Sarah's birth date. She is mentioned as a granddaughter in the will of David Greene, father of Abigail, dated 21 Jul 1759. Sarah & Penelope are described as under 18. However, Sarah born in 1741 is thought to be the daughter of Susannah, not Abigail. For this reason, it has been uncertain whether there may have been two couples named John & Abigail in Jamestown during this time period, both having daughters named Penelope & Sarah.
