  1. 1.  Jeremiah Remington was born 25 Jul 1783, Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT; died 18 Aug 1852, Huntington, Chittenden, VT; was buried , Huntington Center Cemetery, Huntington, Chittenden Co., VT.

    He may be the Jeremiah Remington listed in the 1810 Federal Census at Huntington, Chittenden, VT: 1 FWM<10, 1 FWM 26-44, 1 FWF 26-44; total 3. If correct, this means he must have had a young son at this time.

    In the 1830 Federal Census, Jeremiah is age 40 - 50, and his wife is in the same age bracket. In their household are two males 15 - 20 and one male 20 - 30, as well as two females 5 - 10 and two females 15 - 20. If these young people are all his children, he had at least three sons and four daughters. They are living at Huntington, Chittenden, VT. They are still there in 1850, when Jeremiah is age 66 and Mary is 72. Lucinda Remington, age 30, and Joshua Remington, age 90, are in the home, as well as Charles Firman, 30, and Mary Firman, 68.

    Gretchen Paulsen has confirmed that Jeremiah died in 1852, as noted on his gravestone.

    Janet Muff sent me images of the will and probate documents of Jeremiah Griffiths. As it is unclear when he died, she suggests that it's a possibility that Jeremiah Remington was the biological son of Jeremiah Griffiths. However, this needs more research to confirm.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Philemon and his family are living next door to Rhoda Remington and the Mix family, at Huntington, Chittenden, VT. Mrs. Joshua Mix is the former Sophronia Remington, Philemon's first cousin. In the census Philemon appears to be age 31 and his wife Adeline is 38. Three children are in the household: Mitchell, Annette, & Anaurilla (?).

    In the 1860 census, the family is at Huntington: Philemon 46, Adeline 48, Mitchell 21, Annette 19, & Ann 17.

    In 1870 Philemon & Adeline are still at Huntington, with their daughter "Ansarilla" (?).

    I have placed Philemon in this family group because Pat Boyden's genealogy lists him as a son of Jeremiah & Mary (Ross) Remington (needs more research to confirm).

    I have placed Joel in this family group based on a Remington genealgoy report from Pat Boyden.

    Joel and his family are living at Waterbury, Washington Co., VT., in the 1850, 1860, 1870, & 1880 Federal Censuses.

    In 1850 Joel & "Almira" are ages 31 & 32, and have a daughter Elvira, age 11. Also in the household are (presumed) in-laws Lyman & Sarah Hall, ages 67 & 65.

    In 1860 Joel & Armina are 42 & 43, and have a son Homer E., age 7.

    In 1870 Joel & Armina M. are 52 & 53, and it is noted that Armina is an invalid. Also in the household are Lyman & Sarah Hall, ages 86 & 82.

    In 1880 Joel has remarried and has a wife named Rhoda. A stepdaughter, Minnie Rand, age 15, is with them.

    One genealogy says he died 25 March 1891 at age 73.

    Notes:

    A Remington genealgy from Valorie Sherman has Lucinda marrying Royal Firman in 1847. However, in the 1850 census she is Lucinda Remington, age 30, living with her parents and aged grandfather. Also in the household are Charles & Mary Firman. Perhaps Charles is Lucinda's husband but the census taker did not write her correct married name? In the same census, Royal Firman is age 29, the Town Clerk, living with the Carpenter family.

    The book "History of Worcester Co., MA" p 98 says Lurenda, a d/o Jeremiah & mMary, was born in 1835; but that would make her mother about 58 when Lurenda was born. She may have been born earlier (1825?), or may have been someone else's daughter (?).

    In the 1910 Federal Census, Mitchell F. Remington is age 71, widowed, and living at Hinesburg, Chittenden Co., VT.

    Notes:

    I have made an assumption that Azariah is the son of Joel & Armina, because he has a son named Joel, and also because he is living in the same town as Joel in 1870 & 1880. Also, in 1870, Homer E. Remington, age 18, is living with Azariah and family; and in 1860 Homer is with Joel & Armina. Therefore, it is a reasonable assumption (needs research to confirm).

    In 1860, A. B. Remington is age 24, a clerk, living with the family of Ira Sayles at Richmond, Chittenden Co., VT.

    In 1870, A. B. Remington is age 34, married to Martha M., age 27, and living at Waterbury, Washington Co., VT. They have a son Joel D., 11 months. Also in the household is Homer E. Remington, age 18, probably brother of Azariah.

    In 1880 Azariah B. Remington is 44 and his wife Martha M. Remington is 38; their son Joel D. Remington is 11. They are still at Waterbury.

    Azariah's (assumed) father Joel and family are living at Waterbury in 1850, 1860, 1870, & 1880.
