Solomon Remington

In the 1850 Federal Census, Solomon appears to be the individual of that name living at Oswego, Oswego Co., NY. His age is given as 39, which is correct for him. The head of household is Isaac Remington, age 62; both are born VT. Also in the home are the following (not listed in this order): Mary 38, Huldah 27, Joseph 20, Wealthy 11, Truman 8, Irving 3, & Eveline 1.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Solomon Remington and family are living at Clay, Jones Co., IA. His second wife, Fanny, is age 30; four of his children and one of hers by her previous marriage are in the household.

In 1870 Solom Remington, 60, and his wife Fannie, 40, are living at Webster, Webster Co., IA.

In 1880 Solomon & Fannie A. are 69 & 49, still at Webster. Son Erving O., age 31, is with them.

Solomon married Mary Margaret Ostrander 4 Oct 1836. Mary (daughter of Henry G. Ostrander and Hannah Eliza Unknown) was born 2 Aug 1817, NY; died 29 Jul 1854. [Group Sheet]

Solomon married Fanny A. Mandigo 28 May 1855, Bowers Prairie, Jones Co., IA. Fanny was born 1830, Brownsville, Jefferson Co., NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, his name appears to be written as Truman.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Newman & Eliza are living at Madison, Jones Co., IA. They have a 9-year-old son, Merton C. (?) The family is living with Eliza's parents and sister.

In 1900 Newman & E. M. are at Jewell, Hamilton Co., IA.

Newman married Eliza M. Himebaugh Abt 1870. Eliza (daughter of Cyrus C. Himebaugh and Clarissa H. Unknown) was born Sep 1850, PA; died Aft Jun 1900. [Group Sheet]

His name in unclear in the 1860 census -- it looks like Erwin. A family tree at Rootsweb has his name as Irving. However, an online gravestone transcription says Erving.

In the 1900 Federal Census, the family is living at Eastern, Knox Co., NE. The household consists of: Erving Remington 52, his wife Della 38, Henry 18, Frank 16, Delbert 13, Martin or Merton 12, Mary 10, Erving 8, Earl 5, & Wm. McKinley 4/12. This census gives the month and year of birth for all individuals. According to census data, Irving & Della have been married 20 years; Della has had 11 children, of whom 9 are still living. Eight are listed in the census. Where is the other living child?

His gravestone says he was born at Yorktown, PA.

Erving married Dellaphene Morgan Aft 1 Jun 1880. Dellaphene was born Apr 1862, IA; died 18 Feb 1926. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 Federal Census, Charles & Samantha Remmington, ages 29 & 23, are at Webster, Webster Co., IA. They have two children, Charles O. & Nelson B.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Charles & Samantha and six of their children are living at Athol, Kootenai Co., ID. According to the census data, they have been married 24 years; Samantha has had 7 children, of whom 7 are still living. So, there must be another child somewhere.

Possibly they had a daughter named Lucy Amanda (b 3 Aug 1880 in Webster City, Hamilton Co., IA; d 9 Feb 1960 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA; md Asa Harkness b 10 Jun 1870 Sutherland, O'Brien Co., IA; md 5 Apr 1897 in Vermillion, Clay Co., SD. (This needs more research. Asa & Lucy had a daughter named Samantha, so that fact, and Lucy's birthplace, are strong clues.) See also note for daughter Libby.

In 1910 they are still at Athol, with Rhoda & Norman/Newman S. Their adult daughter Jerusha is listed on a different census sheet, although she is living in town and is a public school teacher. Perhaps she boards with different families (?).

Another genealogy has Charles's date of death as 19 Jul 1938, at Orafina, Clearwater Co., ID. This needs more research.

An online genealogy lists these two daughters: Lucy Amanda 3 Aug 1880 (Webster City, IA) - 9 Feb 1960, and Mary Elizabeth 17 Jul 1882 (Webster City, IA) - 12 Dec 1975 (Portland, OR). I see Libby in the 1900 census,but with a different birthdate, and no Lucy. This family needs more research.

Charles married Samantha Ann Brewer 26 Nov 1876. Samantha was born 2 Jun 1857, WI; died 22 Feb 1922, Athol, Kootenai Co., ID. [Group Sheet]

In the 1900 Federal Census, Merton (?) and Alice Remington are living at Clay, Clay Co. IA. They have been married 5 years. Census data says his parents were born in NY/PA, which is correct.

In 1910 & 1920, Merton C. & Alice I. Remington, both aged 39/49, are still living at Clay, IA. Living with them is adopted daughter Irma Hill (probably a niece).

In 1930 Merton & Alice are still living at Clay, IA.

Merton married Alice I. Unknown Abt 1895. Alice was born Dec 1870, IA; died Aft Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

In 1910 the family is at Eastern Twp, Knox Co., NE: Henry 28, Laura 29, Edna 4, Donald 2, & Harold 4 mos (?unclear); also there is widowed brother Frank, age 25, and his two daughters, Pearl & Maryann (?unclear).

In the 1930 Federal Census, Henry & Laura are living at Golden, Meade Co., SD. They have two sons with them: Donald H. & Francis W. Nearby is Harold O. Remington and his wife, as well as brother Earl E. Remington and family, including another brother Ervy.

Henry married Laura B. Unknown Abt 1905. Laura was born Abt 1880, IA; died Aft 1 Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

Emma is not listed with the family in the 1900 census, and it would appear from census data that either she or Clarence died young. I have not been able to find either of them in the various censuses.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Frank is age 25, widowed, and living with brother Henry and family at Eastern Twp, Knox CO., NE. He has two young daughters.

By 1920 he has remarried to Louisa and has three more children. They are living at Hartington, Cedar Co., NE. His daughter Pearl, 14, is also with them.

In 1930 he has a third wife, Nellie, and is living at Precinct 9, Cedar Co., NE. They have seven children in the household: Richard 13, Charles 11, Loretta 10, Clarence 8, Mildred 5, Georgia 4 3/12, & Dorothy 2 4/12. I am not sure if any of these children are Nellie's, although from the census data they alI appear to belong to the previous wife.

Frank married Nellie Unknown Between 1927 and 1 Apr 1930. Nellie was born Abt 1889, MO; died Aft 1 Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

In the 1930 Federal Census, Delbert & Maude are living at Gayville, Yankton Co., SD. They have three daughters.

Delbert married Maude Elsie Case Abt 1911. Maude was born 26 Jul 1892, SD; died Jun 1974, SD. [Group Sheet]

Clarence is not listed with the family in the 1900 census, and it would appear from census data that either he or Emma died young. I have not been able to find either of them in the various censuses.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Earl and his wife Elsie are at Golden, Meade Co., SD. They have one child, Cecil, almost 2. also with them is Earl's brother Ervy, 26, and a stepson, Ervy Nordien, 12. They are near brother Henry and family.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Charles O. & Helen A. Remington, ages 52 & 53, are living at Jerome Prairie, Josephine, OR. According to census data, they have been married 24 years. Five of their children are in the household: Alford C. 19, Roda V. 16, Elmer H. 14, Leavett L. 12 (dtr), & Norman H. 10. All except charles were born in Canada.

Charles married Helen Clarissa Agnes McTavish 1 Oct 1901, Spokane, WA. Helen was born 29 Jun 1875, Buckhorn, Ontario, Canada; died 22 Jul 1961, Edmonds, Snohomish Co., WA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1910 Federal Census, Jerusha Remington is a public school teacher at Athol, Kootenai Co., ID. Her age is given as 30.

A family tree at Rootsweb says she was born 17 Sep 1883, and that her middle name is Truella.

In the 1900 census, his name appears to be written as Solomon R. Remington, he is age 2, b SD, and his birth date is Aug 1897. In 1910 he is Norman (Newman?) S. Remington, age 10, b SD. I am assuming this is the same child because of the place of birth.

He appears to be the Norman Remmington/Remington in the 1920 & 1930 censuses in WA state. The age is about right, and the place of birth is correct. His parents' birthplaces are given incorrectly, but suggest the correct places. For instance, his mother was born in WI, but the 1930 says his father was born there. In 1920 it says his parents were both born in IA, and his parents did live in Iowa when they were first married and had their two oldest children.

In 1920, Norman Remmington is 21 and living at Othello, Adams Co., WA. In 1930 the family is at Mukilteo, Snohomish Co., WA.

A family tree at Rootsweb says his date of birth is 25 Sep 1898. This agrees with the Social Security Death Index:
