Rebecca married William Manton Manchester 7 Oct 1742, Tiverton, RI. William (son of John MANCHESTER and Phebe GRAY) was born 9 Feb 1719/20, Tiverton, RI; died Bef 1 Mar 1772. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

She may be the Phebe Manchester who married either Samuel Simmons or David Slocome, both of whom were married in 1766 to a Phebe Manchester at the Amicable Congregational Church.

Gilbert married Mary Mercy Durfee Abt 1767. Mary was born Abt 1747. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

He is probably the Godfrey Manchester who, on 6 March 1805, "conveyed a lot of land to Philip Gray, 3rd, as clerk of the Amicable Society of Tiverton." A meeting house was built on that land, near Tiverton Four Corners, to replace the older one on Lake Rd. The newer building burned in 1845, and was soon rebuilt, and was remodeled over the years. This is the church building that stands on Main Rd. in Tiverton today. (ref: "The History of Amicable Congregational Church 1746 - 1946")

On 10 Dec 1772 Godfrey Manchester of Tiverton bought land in Tiverton from John Manchester of Little Compton, grandson of John Manchester, deceased. As I see it, these two were brothers.

I have made an assumption that she is the Rhoda Manchester who had a daughter named Nancy Manchester, recorded in the Tiverton VRs on 11 June 1764. The will below supports that, as her son-in-law John Manchester was first married to a Nancy, with their children's births recorded at Tiverton. Also, the executor was James Manchester, her nephew, who may have been the son of her brother Gilbert.

In the 1820 Tiverton census Rhoda Manchester is living with just one male age 10-16. I am not sure that this is this particular Rhoda, but it is a reasonable assumption.

Rhoda Manchester of Tiverton, gentlewoman, wrote her will 13 Aug 1823, proved 5 Sep 1825. In it she mentions her (stepson or son-in-law?) John Manchester and his wife Lucy; their five children: Gideon, Allen, John, Jr., Searel, & Nancy; 7 grandchildren -- Cornelius Cook Manchester (under 21); Thaddeus, Ellery, & Deborah Manchester; Sally Devole (w/o Joseph), Polly Devole (w/o Presbury), & Rhoda Gifford; also great-grandchild Nancy Devole dtr. of Sally; other individuals -- Andrew, Nancy, & Almy Gifford, children of Sylvester Gifford, Esq., of Little Compton: and Peace, wife of Cyrus Gray of NY. Her nephew James Manchester was appointed executor.

I have a transcribed copy of the entire will.

Tiverton has his date of birth as 1745, with no month and day, so that may have been an estimate many years after the fact.

"The Manchester Family of Rhode Island" by Alden & Rita Manchester has this particular John Manchester marrying Sarah Bailey. "Little Compton Families" by Benjamin F. Wilbour agrees with this but also shows John as marrying second to Mary Brayton. However, this is incorrect.

The Tiverton VRs list only four children born to this couple: George, Cornelius, William Cook, and Loring. In addition, Ruth, Sarah, & John are included by Alden & Rita Manchester in their Manchester genealogy. I have listed Ruth and John pending further research to confirm -- but please note that as yet I have not personally found the evidence for these two.

In addition to the four children found in the Tiverton VRs, Benjamin F. Wilbour's book also lists Ruth, Betsey, and Benjamin, but no John. However, Benjamin is not their son because he belongs to John Manchester and Mary Brayton. Betsey's marriage record identifies her only as daughter of John of Little Compton -- but which John? I have included her in this family group (pending further research to confirm), as Wilbour's book says this John resided in LC.

Another possible second wife for this John Manchester might be Rhoda Manchester. However, she also had a son named John, which makes it unlikely that she would have been the second wife if indeed there was a son John from the first marriage who lived to adulthood.

Additional research is needed to resolve these issues. Please note that the family lines are subject to change for the various John Manchesters.

Tiverton Deed Book has John Manchester (and wife Sarah) of Little Compton, grandson of John Manchester, deceased, sold land in Tiverton to Godfrey Manchester of Tiverton on 10 Dec 1772.

In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is at Tiverton, RI: Wanton Manchester 73 farmer, Almy Manchester 63, Oliver P. Seabury 35 miner (husband of Elizabeth), Harriet O. Manchester 25, Susan A. Manchester 23, Mary J. Manchester 20, George ? Manchester 65, Mumford Lawton 37 laborer, and Elizabeth Seabury 33. Next door are Jared and Nancy Reid; Jared is the Congregational Minister and Nancy is a daughter of Cornelius Seabury. Next to them are Franklin and Emily Seabury and their two young children; Emily is another daughter of Wanton & Almy Manchester; Franklin is a brother to Nancy Reid.
