    Notes:

    The will of Josephus Rice of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 26 Mar 1812, proved 17 July 1813. It mentions wife Sarah; son Thomas Rice; dtrs: Elizabeth Whitford w/o John S., Phebe Rice, Sarah Arnold w/o Daniel, and deceased dtr Sarah Arnold formerly wife of James Arnold; and granddtr. Lucy Arnold, d/o James and Sarah.

    His will is somewhat confusing because he mentions his wife as Sarah Rice. However, his daughter Sarah's (w/o Daniel Arnold) gravestone identifies her as the daughter of Josephus & Mary. He also mentions another daughter Sarah, deceased. Both Sarahs married an Arnold; however, one could not have died before the other was born, if the ages on the gravestone and in the will are correct. Could there have been a divorce, and he remarried to a Sarah, and had another daughter named Sarah? Or, perhaps his second wife already had a daughter Sarah, whom he adopted; or perhaps she was simply his stepdaughter and he included her in his will as a daughter. Josephus did have a daughter Abigail (Warwick VRs), and according to DAR records she married James Arnold and they had a daughter named Lucy b 30 June 1800, so perhaps the second daughter Sarah in his will should read Abigail.

    Notes:

    Mary & Josephus were married by Thomas Rice, Justice. The marriage record identifies her as daughter of Capt. Thomas.

    All of the children and grandchildren are named in his will, but no wife is mentioned. Thomas and his family lived in the Bald Hill section of Warwick, RI.

    The name John Rice ("John Riss") shows up in Warwick records for the first time on 13 Jan 1661, when he joined Edmund Calverly and Randall Holden in witnessing an indenture. John O. Austin, who published a biographical sketch of John Rice, says he came from old England with Mr. (Edmund) Calverly.

    No source has identified John's parents but he was very close to Edmund Calverly, and given the difference in their ages (Calverly was born in 1613), it can be assumed that John may have been an apprentice of Calverly's or some kind of relative back in England. Calverly made a deed of gift to John and Elizabeth Rice on 18 Nov 1676 "in consideration of the Love and affection which I have," but mentions no relationship. Calverly also made a second, also unexplained, deed of gift 23 Jan 1677/78 to John Rice alone.

    No proof of when his wife Elizabeth died or whether he remarried, or no birth records of his children's births can be found in Warwick records. He had two sons to whom he made deeds of gift, but it is possible he may have had one or more daughters (unknown at this time). Elizabeth may have died young and John never remarried and this could explain why only two children are found for John and Elizabeth.

    Possibly Elizabeth died shortly after their second child was born. No record has been found of other children being born to this couple.

    Notes:

    Israel's will names his father, Stephen; his wife, Mary; and his children: Israel, William, Elisha, Stephen, James, Joseph (eldest), Josiah, Mary (Low), Sarah (Carpenter), & Barbary (Carpenter). I have estimated the dates of birth for most of them -- needs more research.

    It was either this "Israel Arnold of Pawtuxet" or his son who in 1707 purchased land in Cowesett from the heirs of Robert Potter. This piece of land was originally designated as farm #3, on the northwest corner of the intersection of Routes 2 & 3. Part of this was later sold to the Remingtons.

    Israel married Mary Barker Abt 1672. Mary (daughter of James Barker and Barbara Dungan) was born Abt 1650; died Abt 1723. [Group Sheet]
