    Notes:

    I am making an assumption here, that Samuel belongs to this couple. He had a son named Asa, whom he possibly named after his father. However, he is not listed in the Gov. John Cranston genealogy.

    I also am assuming that he is the Samuel T. Bates in the RI Cemetery Database (middle initial similar), with dates c.1801-11 Aug 1838. His wife Roby may have remarried after he died, as I can't find her grave listed in the database.

    Samuel married Roby W. Straight Abt 1822. Roby was born Abt 1802. [Group Sheet]

    There may also have been an Asa Bates, Jr., b.c.1795, in this family. The 1850 Federal Census shows an Asa Bates, age 55, living in Smithfield, RI, with wife Marietta, age 54.
