"Remington is credited as being the primary imagemaker of the historic West. His bronzes are a landmark in the history of bronze casting in both form and subject matter . . .

"Frederic Remington was born in Canton, NY, in 1861. His father was a Civil War hero and his mother came from a prosperous family. Frederic demonstrated great interest in horses and military things at an early age, and was sent to the Highland Military Academy in Massachusetts for secondary schooling. Developing an insatiable appetite for art, Remington received his first formal art training at Yale and the Art Students League, but left college before graduating to pursue the adventure and excitement of the western frontier. He gathered information, made sketches, and took photographs which he later used at his home in New Rochelle, NY, to create his paintings and bronzes. He died in 1909 of complications following an appendectomy, and is buried in Canton, NY."

In the 1850 Federal Census, Seth is age 43 (?), Mary is 40, and their five children range in age from 19 down to 1. The family is living in Seneca, Ontario Co., NY.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is at Canton, St. Lawrence Co., NY: S. W. Remington 52, Maria P. 48, S. P. 26, Josephine 18, Wm. R. 21; also Ira Martin 11 (probably Lamartine Remington) and Joanna Hayes 18 (domestic).

  1. 8.  Thomas Remington was born 4 Nov 1763, Suffield, Hartford Co., CT (son of Thomas Remington and Mary Remington); died 12 Aug 1821, West Henrietta, NY; was buried , Riverview Cemetery, Henrietta, NY.

    Notes:

Thomas and his family must have lived in Vermont for a while, because his son Silas was born at Rupert, VT, in 1792, according to Boyd Scott Remington's chart. Also, the 1860 census shows Thomas's birthplace as VT. The 1790 census lists Thomas Remington at Rupert (indexed at Ancestry.com as Bennington); the 1800 census shows Thomas & Silas "Remmington" at Rupert. They are the only Remington families there at the time. My assumption is that the Silas on the census is Thomas's brother, b. 1776.
