Eliphalet Remington, II

Eliphalet is the founder of the Remington Arms Company; he made the famous guns at "The Gulph" or "Gulch" until 1830, then in Ilion, where the first "Armory" was built in 1835. For more information and pictures, see: [www.remington.com/aboutus/history.htm]

Remington, Eliphalet (Oct. 27, 1793 - Aug. 12, 1861), manufacturer, the eldest son of Eliphalet Remington, a carpenter and mechanic, was born at Suffield, Conn. Eliphalet married Abigail Paddock 12 May 1814. Abigail (daughter of William Paddock and Lucy Loveland) was born Abt. 3 Oct 1890, Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT; died 21 Aug 1841; was buried , Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, Herkimer Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

2. Samuel Remington was born 12 Apr 1819, Ilion, Herkimer Co., NY; died 1 Dec 1882; was buried , Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, Herkimer Co., NY.
3. Mary Ann Remington was born 16 Sep 1820.
4. Maria Remington was born 28 Nov 1824; died 30 Mar 1876; was buried , Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, Herkimer Co., NY.
5. Eliphalet Remington, III was born 12 Nov 1828, NY; died 2 Apr 1924.

Eliphalet & Elizabeth moved to Litchfield, Herkimer County, NY, in 1799; they built a stone house, Crane's Corner, then "The Forge" on Steele Corner, "The Gulph" or "Gulch" in 1807 (see Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart).

Eliphalet was killed in a wagon accident in 1828. (see "The Remington Historical Treasury of American Guns" by Harold L. Peterson, New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1966, p. 29)

Eliphalet married Elizabeth Kilbourn 3 Mar 1791, Suffield, CT. Elizabeth was born 20 Aug 1770; died 15 Apr 1843. [Group Sheet]

Boyd Scott Remington's Remington Ancestry Chart at RIHSL has Daniel's date of birth as 18 Feb 1706.

The Suffield records show a birth to a son of Daniell & Sarah Remington: Abijah, who died at about 14 months on 8 July, no year given.

He may be the Daniel Remington of Suffield who later married Mrs. Susannah Bush, widow, in 1770, as her fourth husband.

Daniel married Sarah Winchell 7 Jan 1730/31, Suffield, Hartford County, CT. Sarah (daughter of Jonathan Winchell and Sarah Hovey) was born 14 Oct 1711; died Aft 1747. [Group Sheet]
