  1. 1.  Enoch Remington, I was born Between 1728 and 1729, Barrington, RI (son of Thomas Remington and Mary Hunt); died 12 Jun 1811, Barrington, RI; was buried , Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI.

    Notes:

The New England Historical & Genealogical Register 22, 354 says "Enoch was son of Thomas, of John of Suffolk."

The will of Micah Brown dated 4 Jan 1747/48 mentions him as "kinsman Enoch Remington." Perhaps they were cousins? (see next note)

On 15 Mar 1742/43, James Brown of Barrington was appointed to be guardian of Enoch Remington, a minor over 14 years of age, son of Thomas Remington of Barrington.

"Enock Remington" was baptized at the Newman Congregational Church, Seekonk (or East Providence) in May 1729. (see Arnold's VRs for East Providence, Church Records, p. 519) He was also a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Boyd Scott Remington gives his dates as 1735 - 1798 (no sources). Also, he has his parents as John & Susanna of Jamestown, which is almost certainly incorrect.

The will of Enoch Remington of Barrington, RI, gentleman, was dated 21 Nov 1807, and proved 1 July 1811. In mentions his wife Molly, and several children, grandchildren, and other relatives as follows: son Enoch dec'd., leaving widow Ruth; daughters Molly Niall, Lydia Bowen, Bathiah Armington, and Mercy Armington dec'd; son-in-law Asa Armington of Rehoboth, yeoman; grandsons Samuel Walker (?) Remington & Enoch Remington, sons of Enoch dec.'d.; granddaughter Ruth Armington, daughter of Enoch dec'd.; and grandson Joseph Armington, son of Mercy dec'd. The will was witnessed by Josiah Humphrey, Jr., Benjamin Niall, & Elisha Humphrey.

Enoch married Molly Watson Abt 1756. Molly (daughter of Matthew Watson, II and Bethiah Reed) was born 5 Mar 1734/35; died 10 Oct 1820, East Providence or Barrington, RI; was buried , Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Molly Watson Remington was born Abt 11 Nov 1757, Warren, RI; died 3 Apr 1825.
    2. Lydia Remington was born 20 Jul 1765, Warren, RI; died 1836.
    3. Enoch Remington, II was born 20 Jul 1768, RI; died 1 Jan 1794, Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI.
    4. Bethiah Remington was born Abt 1770, RI; died 16 Sep 1835; was buried , Newman Cemetery, Pawtucket Ave., East Providence, RI.
    5. Mercy Remington was born Abt 1772, RI; died 16 Oct 1795; was buried , Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI.

  1. 2.  Thomas Remington was born 2 Feb 1701/02, Suffield, Hartford, CT (son of John Remington, I and Hannah Hale); died Abt 23 Jul 1729, Barrington, RI; was buried , Prince's Hill Burying Ground, Barrington, RI.

    Notes:

In March 1728/29 Thomas bought land at Simsbury, CT, from his parents John & Hannah Hale Remington.

The inventory of the estate of Thomas Remington of Barrington is dated 23 Jul 1729. His widow, Mary, is mentioned.

Thomas married Mary Hunt 8 Sep 1727, Providence, RI. Mary (daughter of Enoch Hunt and Elizabeth Bowen) was born 5 Sep 1707, Rehoboth, MA; died 9 Aug 1784, Enfield, Hartford, County, CT. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary Hunt was born 5 Sep 1707, Rehoboth, MA (daughter of Enoch Hunt and Elizabeth Bowen); died 9 Aug 1784, Enfield, Hartford, County, CT.

    Notes:

She may have married second, David Sabin/Saben. Seekonk/East Providence VRs have a marriage for Mary Remington of Barrington and David Saben of Rehoboth, on 21 Oct 1731. I am making an assumption that this marriage applies to this Mary, widow of Thomas Remington.

"She and her daughter Mary Sabin are listed on the 'Covenant of Enfield Separatists 1762.' "

Her gravestone in Enfield, CT, names her as Mrs. Mary Allen, formerly wife of Mr. David Sabin.

    Notes:

At the time of their marriage, Thomas & Mary were both "of Barrington." They were married by Richard Brown, Justice.

    Children:
    1. 1. Enoch Remington, I was born Between 1728 and 1729, Barrington, RI; died 12 Jun 1811, Barrington, RI; was buried , Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Remington, I was born 2 Nov 1661, Rowley, MA (son of Thomas Remington and Mehitable Walker); died 1722, Suffield, Hartford County, CT.

    Notes:

Boyd Scott Remington does not list the last three children in this family; however, they are listed in the genealogy at the Suffield Historical Society. Hannah is listed in "Thomas Remington of Suffield, CT, and Some of His Descendants."

An SAR application says Hannah Remington born 25 March 1723 (no parents given) married Joseph Leavitt. The will of Hannah Leavitt mentions brother Samuel Remington as Executor, but genealogies show Samuel son of John and Hannah died in 1763, before Hannah's will was written in 1769. I wonder if that date of death is incorrect. why would she name her deceased brother as Executor? I haven't been able to find another Samuel who might have had a sister Hannah in this time frame.

    Suffield Historical Society: Reference Documents: 2, 8, 12, 155, 161

John married Hannah Hale 19 Dec 1700, Windsor, CT. Hannah (daughter of Timothy Hale and Sarah Barber) was born 14 Sep 1680, Windsor, CT; died 1 Apr 1768. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Hannah Hale was born 14 Sep 1680, Windsor, CT (daughter of Timothy Hale and Sarah Barber); died 1 Apr 1768.

    Notes:

Hannah is mentioned as Hannah Remington, sister, in the 1750 will of Josiah Hale of Suffield.

One source has a daughter, Hannah, born 25 Mar 1723. If this is accurate, she may have been a wife of Joseph Mills, Jr., who married a Hannah Remington. This needs more research to confirm if this Hannah belongs here and if she was one of Joseph's wives. (see Thomas Remington of Suffield, CT, and Some of His Descendants)

  1. 8.  Thomas Remington was born Between 1633 and 1636, Yorkshire, England (son of John REMINGTON, I and Elizabeth Unknown); died 23 Feb 1720/21, Suffield, Hartford, CT.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and/or to other sources as noted herein.)
Thomas and his elder brother, John the second [Jr.], were born in Yorkshire, England, and came to America with their parents. They may have come from the town of Rowley.

Clarence Almon Torrey, in "New England Marriages Prior to 1700," estimates Thomas's year of birth as 1633. Genealogist Gordon L. Remington suggests 1633, in his article "Sabin-Remington-Hunt Notes" in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Oct. 1993, p. 371.

Thomas was a freeman at Rowley, MA, in 1651. His home there is mentioned in the inventory of his father's estate. In the early 1670s he moved to Connecticut, which at that time was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He became a freeman at Windsor in 1672; he was granted land in in Suffield in 1674, and was selectman in 1682. Dewey's book says he moved to Suffield prior to the birth of his son Benjamin in 1677, and took the oath of allegiance in 1679 with his sons Thomas & John, they being then 16 years old and upwards. He was selectman there for six terms between 1682 and 1699; and tithingman for two terms -- 1693/94 and 1699/00. "The History of Suffield" by H. S. Sheldon speaks of Thomas Remington, son of John of Newbury, as having had a grant of land of sixty acres on Feather Street, Suffield, and his son Jonathan had a grant of thirty acres next to his father's lot. Remington Street in Suffield, once called Northampton Road, takes its name from this family. (See "Thomas Remington of Suffield, Conn. and Some of His Descendants" by Louis Marinus Dewey, published in 1909 by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston.)

From the Suffield Historical Society website: "The settling of The Town of Suffield as part of Massachusetts began in 1670. The first settlers were all land grantees, given land if they moved to Suffield and improved their land. Between 1670 and 1682, grants of 40 to 60 acres were typically given depending on family size and status. The 30 families identified here were all proprietors [original land grantees] of the Town of Suffield [includes Thomas Remington] . . . Suffield is recorded as Suffield, CT in this Suffield database even though it was Suffield, MA until 1749."

Thomas was called "Goodman Remington" in early records. In 1690 he was one of five men on a committee assigned to find a minister for the town -- "to dispense the things of God unto them, and repair the breaches amongst them, and reunite them all again in peace and love."
(See "Remingtons of Utah. . . " by Ward Jay Roylance, p. 128.)

Thomas Remington, second son of John the first, moved to Connecticut, where he was the first of the Suffield, CT branch of the Remingtons. He married Mehitable Walker in Rowley, MA in 1658, and became a freeman there in 1672. About 1677 he removed to Suffield and died there 22 Feb. 1721. (Further material on Thomas and this branch of the family can be found in: the Encyclopedia of American Biography, Vol. 4, p. 243; and New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 63 & 64, compiled by L. M. Dewey.)

Thomas married Mehitable Walker 19 Mar 1657/58, Rowley, MA. Mehitable (daughter of Richard Walker and Jane Talmadge) was born Abt 1638; died 17 Dec 1718, Suffield, CT. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mehitable Walker was born Abt 1638 (daughter of Richard Walker and Jane Talmadge); died 17 Dec 1718, Suffield, CT.

    Notes:

One online database has her date of death as 17 Dec 1718 (see Paul Remington's web site).

The Remington Family book, compiled by Martha A. Benns, has the children and their dates listed on p. 30.

    Notes:

According to "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" ( by Clarence Almon Torrey, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1985), the date of this marriage is 19 March 1657/8. Boyd Scott Remington has 19 Jan 1658. The town records probably say "the first month," which at that time was March. An online transcript of the Rowley records has 19 June 1658, as does Carl Boyer's "Ancestral Lines Revised.".
