Peter B. Remington and his brother Peleg were mill operators in Scituate, RI from about 1814/15. The mill manufactured cotton yarn.

I have made an assumption that his middle intial B stands for Burlingame, and that he was named after his maternal grandfather.

Peter married Mary Unknown Abt 1811. Mary was born Abt 1795; died Aft 1 Jun 1850. [Group Sheet]

Possibly her maiden name was Jerauld, as a daughter was named Mary Jerauld Remington.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary Remington is living with her son Alpha J. Remington and his wife and son at Albany, NY. Mary's age is given as 54, but she may have been older than that.

She may also be the Mary Remington, age 67, born RI, boarding at Rochester, NY, in 1860.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 20 Feb 1819: "Capt. Thomas Remmington, d. in Pawtuxet, aged 61."

RI American, death notice: "Capt. Thomas Remington, d. at Pawtuxet in 61st yr., 15 Feb 1819, a nautical commander, Masonic honors."

According to a local historian, Ginny Leslie, Thomas Remington lived in a house now at 100 Post Rd. in Pawtuxet Village. Elsewhere it has been stated that he lived at 47 Post Rd., but Ms. Leslie states that this is incorrect.

From an email from Ms. Leslie, dated 20 Jan 2010, concerning "a certain house (100 Post Road) . . . According to land evidence records, this is the Thomas Remington House. He bought the land from Malachi and Peter Rhodes. Many years ago, Hazel Kennedy, a local historian, claimed that the house at 47 Post Road was the Thomas Remington house dating from around 1740 but this is NOT TRUE. That is the Peleg Rhodes House and dates to about 1800 (it is obviously a federal house, not a colonial one). Thomas Remington never owned the house and it appears Peleg Rhodes lived there until his death, which was after TR's death in 1819. Unfortunately, people continue to identify this house as Thomas Remington's."

"Descendants of Roger Williams" Book I, p. 153 says Peleg was lost at sea in 1776. There is a single gravestone in Pawtuxet Cemetery (WK #3) for him and his wife Waite Remington. This has been photographed for my collection.

Information from Richard Allen Brownell, Sr.:
Peleg's specific dates of birth and death were received in an email from Mr. Brownell.
Peleg Remington was captain of a vessel in the Maritime Service and took the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonies in 1775.

He is likely one of the two Peleg Remingtons listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

A typewritten Remington genealogy given to Mrs. Dorothy White of the Roger Williams Family Association shows Peleg as a son of Stephen Remington & Lydia Rhodes. No specific documentation is provided.

A note in the papers of the Mary E. Rice Collection, excerpted from a copy of a letter written by Mrs. Rice to Virginia Adair, a descendant of Peleg Remington: "Dear Mrs. Adair, I have found that Peleg Remington is the son of Stephen & (guess what) a Lydia Rhodes. I will continue to check this . . . "

Peleg married Waite Rhodes 10 Jul 1757, Cranston, RI. Waite (daughter of Charles Rhodes and Deborah Greene) was born 25 Aug 1740, Warwick, RI; died 25 Oct 1810, Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

Peleg & Waite were married by Joseph Harris, Justice. A copy of the official marriage record is among the papers in the Mary E. Rice Collection.

I have estimated the birth years of some of the children. Russell is not found in most of the genealogies, but is in a family Bible record. Also, it is said that Charles had a twin named Deborah -- she must have died in infancy. I have no further information on either Russell or Deborah.
