According to the "History of Providence County," p. 621, ed. by Richard M. Bayles in 1891, Thomas was born in Coventry, but soon afterwards his parents moved to Scituate. He married Letitia White of Scituate, and they had three children.

In the 1880 Federal Census, the family is at Scituate, Providence, County, RI.

Thomas was elected to the Scituate Town Council in 1887 and 1889, serving as president for part of the time. During the Civil War he was in the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery.

Around 1875 he started the Remington's Dairy, which was continuously managed by future generations for 94 years. Formerly he had been a cattle dealer. He would take the train to New York, buy horses and cows, then drive them home to Rhode Island, selling and trading some along the way. After starting the dairy business, he peddled milk by horse and wagon, and often by horse and sleigh in the winter months. (Information on the Remington's Dairy was obtained from several newspaper articles on file at the North Scituate Library.)

Thomas married Letitia White 20 Feb 1859, RI. Letitia (daughter of Thomas White and Eliza Unknown) was born 15 Dec 1839, RI; died 4 Sep 1899; was buried , Historical Cemetery 83, Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

According to data in the 1880 Federal Census, Letitia's parents were born in Ireland.

The RI Marriage Index gives her name as Leutishia.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

He is probably the John Remington in the 1880 Coventry Census, age 74, living with his wife Lyly (Lydy?), age 55. His third wife was Lydia Arnold.

In the 1850 Federal Census he is in Scituate, RI, with his second wife Amy and 6 children.

In 1870 John and Amey are at Scituate. Son William is with them, age 22.

The RI Death Index has his date of death as Feb 20, 1883.

  1. 8.  Thomas Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1773 (son of Thomas Remington and Lydia Collins); died 1 Nov 1852; was buried , Remington Family Cemetery, CY148, David Dr., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I believe this Thomas Remington, Jr., is the one mentioned as a cousin in the will of Thomas Collins of Foster, dated 24 May 1805. The word cousin can mean relative, or he could mean first cousin, as we use the term today.

Information on some individuals in this family group came from "Representative Men & Old Families of Rhode Island," Vol. I (Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1908), p. 591. The dates for Thomas came from the RI Cemetery Database, Coventry Historical Cemetery #148.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Thomas & Patience are in their 70s and living at Coventry, RI, with their daughters Eliza and Susan.

I am not sure that Sheffield belongs in this family -- see notes for him. However, evidence of location, dates, and names strongly supports this conclusion.

Thomas married Patience Matteson Abt 1797. Patience (daughter of Silas Matteson and Patience Hall) was born 20 Sep 1779, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 1 Nov 1860, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Remington Family Cemetery, David Dr., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Patience Matteson was born 20 Sep 1779, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI (daughter of Silas Matteson and Patience Hall); died 1 Nov 1860, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Remington Family Cemetery, David Dr., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1860 Federal Census, Patience is age 80 living, with her daughter Eliza age 50, and with Robert & Mary Williams and their three children, at Kent County, RI.

Her grave is in Coventry Historical Cemetery #148.

    Children:
    1. Sally Ann Remington was born Abt 1798, RI; died 24 Jun 1850, RI; was buried , Levi Whitford Lot, Weaver Hill Rd., West Greenwich, RI.
    2. Mary "Polly" Remington was born Abt 1801, RI; died 21 Apr 1859; was buried , Gibbs-Westcott Lot, Plainfield Pike, Coventry, RI.
    3. 4. John Remington was born Abt 28 Feb 1805, RI; died 20 Mar 1883, Coventry, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, CY30, Coventry, RI.
    4. Eliza Remington was born Abt Jan 1809, RI; died 10 Feb 1875; was buried , Remington Family Cemetery, CY148, David Dr., Coventry, RI.
    5. Sheffield R. Remington was born Between 1810 and 1813, Coventry, RI; died 31 Aug 1877, Coventry, RI.
    6. Susan Remington was born Abt 1811, Coventry, RI; died 29 Oct 1855, Coventry, RI; was buried , Coventry, RI.
    7. Cynthia Cruff Remington was born 25 Aug 1819, RI; died 20 Nov 1887, Griswold, New London Co., CT; was buried , Read & Herskell Cemetery, Ross Hill Rd., Lisbon, CT.

  3. 10.  Olney E. Potter was born 22 May 1788 (son of William Potter and Mary Ellis); died 19 May 1831, Foster, RI; was buried , Hopkins Mills, Foster, RI.

    Notes:

DAR records show a first marriage for Olney, to Amy Gully, and a daughter Lucinda (no dates in the file). This needs more research to confirm.

There were several individuals named Olney Potter living at this time, but this one is unique in that he has the middle initial E.

POTTER Olney E., at Foster, aged 43 years, May 19, 1831.

His gravestone at Hopkins Mills Cemetery identifies him as son of William Potter (findagrave.com). I have placed him here as a son of William Potter & Mary Ellis, based solely on a DAR record. I have not found other evidence thus far to determine if he might belong to a different William. However, it is reasonable to place him here because Olney had a son named Pardon (see gravestone at Hopkins Mills), and the ancestry of his (assumed) father William goes back to Pardon Tillinghast.

I have not yet found a connection to the Olney family.

In the Federal Census of 1820, Olney E. Potter is in Foster, RI. Unfortunately, the census taker listed the heads of families roughly in alphabetical order (at least with all the Ps together) so it is impossible to see who was living next to whom. Other Potter heads of households listed are: John, William, Daniel, Benjamin, and Edmund.

Olney's household includes: 1 free wh male 26-44, 5 free wh females <10, 1 free wh female 16-25, 1 free wh female 26-44, total of 8. This implies two parents and 5 young girls, and one older girl/young woman.

In the Federal Census of 1830, Olney E. Potter is still in Foster. The household includes: 2 free wh males <5, 1 free wh male 5-9, 1 free wh male 15-19, 1 free wh male 40-49, 2 free wh females 5-9, 2 free wh females 10-14, 3 free wh females 15-19, 1 free wh female 30-29, total of 11.

William A. Potter is on the same page but not living nearby. He may be a brother or other relative.

In the Federal Census of 1810, Olney Potter (no middle initial) is living in Scituate, RI. He is next to Johnson Potter. Olney's household includes: 1 free wh male 10-15, 3 free wh males 16-25, 1 free wh female <10, 1 free wh female 10-15, 1 free wh female 16-25; total of 7. This appears to be a young couple ages 16-25, along with two other young adult males, and 1 teen boy and 1 teen girl, and 1 girl under 10. If Olney & Orra were married at this point, they would have been 21 and 17. This looks like an extended family group -- not sure if it's the correct Olney.

There's also an Olney Potter listed at Cranston in 1810; the household includes 1 free wh male 10-15, 1 free wh male 26-44, 1 free wh female 16-25; total 3.

Olney E. Potter and Hugh Cole witnessed the 21 Feb 1811 will of Joseph Ford of Foster, RI.

Olney E. Potter witnessed the 20 Feb 1812 will of Jacob Walker of Foster, RI.

Olney E. Potter is mentioned in the 11 Jan 1833 will of John Matteson of West Greenwich, physician (implies John may be Olney's son-in-law).

Olney married Orra Cole 22 Apr 1810. Orra (daughter of Hugh Cole and Dorothy "Dolly" Joslin) was born 12 Mar 1793, Foster, RI; died 10 Apr 1876; was buried , Cemetery FR45, Foster, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Orra Cole was born 12 Mar 1793, Foster, RI (daughter of Hugh Cole and Dorothy "Dolly" Joslin); died 10 Apr 1876; was buried , Cemetery FR45, Foster, RI.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1850, Orra Potter is age 56, living in Cranston, RI. With her is Cynthia Mathewson 39, Juliet and Matilda Potter both age 30, and Louisa T. Remington 1. Cynthia is Orra's widowed daughter and Louisa is Orra's granddaughter, child of Louisa Potter Remington who died in 1849.

I have made an assumption that Juliet and Matilda are also Orra's daughters (needs more research to confirm).

In 1860 Orra age 65 is still in Cranston. With her are: Cynthia Potter 48, Juliet Potter 32, and Louisa Remington 11.

    Children:
    1. 5. Louisa Potter was born 1811; died 7 Mar 1849; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, CY30, Coventry, RI.
    2. Cynthia Potter was born 1811; died 7 Feb 1897.
    3. Alfred Potter was born 1815; died 27 Aug 1819; was buried , Hopkins Mills, Foster, RI.
    4. Juliet Potter was born Abt 2 Feb 1817; died 23 Dec 1869; was buried , Hopkins Mills, Foster, RI.
    5. Matilda Potter was born Abt 1820.
    6. Pardon Potter was born Abt 1830; died 28 Nov 1832; was buried , Hopkins Mills, Foster, RI.
