Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Hannah Remington was born 6 Nov 1782, Smithfield, RI (daughter of Benedict Remington and Ruth Southwick); died 9 Jun 1862.

    Notes:

The "George Aldrich Genealogy" p. 180 gives Hannah's date of birth as 11 June 1782.

Genealogy of the Gillson and Jillson Family p 31 says Hannah was d/o Benjamin Remington. The writer may have mistaken Benedict for Benjamin.

Hannah married William Aldrich 11 Sep 1800, Mendon, MA. William (son of Joab Aldrich and Hannah Jillson) was born Abt 3 Nov 1774; died 30 Jan 1843, Mendon, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Hannah & William may have had more children, but I know of only these.

  1. 2.  Benedict Remington was born 20 Apr 1756, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI (son of John Remington and Mary Unknown); died 10 Dec 1819, Mendon, MA.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Benedict was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. According to BSR, he lived in Newport and Smithfield, RI.

His place of birth, Jamestown, was obtained from the death record of his son John. His marriage record in 1780 identifies him as being of Smithfield, and son of John & Mary, of Jamestown.

In the Federal Census of 1800, "Benedic Remmington" is listed in the 2nd Parish at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA.

RI American of 21 Dec 1819, death notice: "Remington, Benedict, at Pawtuxet, in 64th yr." (Did he die at Mendon, MA, or Pawtuxet, RI? I think he probably died in Mendon, MA, and that the newspaper was in error -- needs more research to confirm.)

The Battey Family Papers give his date of death as 9 Dec 1819.

Benedict married Ruth Southwick 5 Oct 1780, Smithfield, RI. Ruth (daughter of Daniel Southwick, III and Ruth Mussey) was born 20 Mar 1755, Mendon, MA; died 10 Jun 1813, Mendon, MA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Ruth Southwick was born 20 Mar 1755, Mendon, MA (daughter of Daniel Southwick, III and Ruth Mussey); died 10 Jun 1813, Mendon, MA.

    Notes:

From Arnold's VRs: "REMINGTON Benedict, of Smithfield, son of John and Mary, of Jamestown, and Ruth Southwick, Jr., of Daniel and Ruth, of Mendon, 5d 10m 1780."

    Children:
    1. 1. Hannah Remington was born 6 Nov 1782, Smithfield, RI; died 9 Jun 1862.
    2. Daniel Remington was born 21 Mar 1786, Smithfield, RI; died 6 Apr 1872; was buried , Union Cemetery, Great Rd., North Smithfield, RI.
    3. Mary Remington was born 8 Jul 1791, Mendon, MA; died Between 6 and 22 Dec 1819, Pawtucket, RI.
    4. John Remington, Sr. was born 23 Aug 1793, Mendon, MA; died 22 Aug 1862, Blackstone, MA; was buried , Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA.
    5. Benedict Remington, Jr. was born 15 Jul 1799, Blackstone, MA; died 15 Apr 1861; was buried , Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Remington was born 7 Feb 1723/24, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI (son of Gershom Remington and Clemence Battey); died 15 Nov 1809, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I am making an assumption that this John Remington belongs in this family group, solely based on the names and dates of his children. (But note: this needs further research. At the present time I can not see any other family in which he would fit.)

Some of John's descendants -- as far as can be determined -- are buried in the Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. A stone there refers to John Remington 1680 - 1745. But if this John who married Mary is the son of John b1680, why do the names of his children reflect the ancestry of Gershom & Clemence?

BSR says he moved from Jamestown in 1756.

This note may pertain to this John Remington: Newport Mercury 30 Oct 1915, historical note from 31 Jul 1769 - "John Remington carries on shoe making for Elizabeth Mumford, wido, in New Lane."

BSR has his date of death as 06 December 1809.

John married Mary Unknown Abt 1748, Jamestown, RI. Mary was born Abt 9 Apr 1725; died 30 Mar 1808, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Unknown was born Abt 9 Apr 1725; died 30 Mar 1808, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I think it likely that she was the daughter of Tiddeman Hull b. 1690. He had a daughter Mary born 28 July 1720. (This needs more research to confirm.) A Battey manuscript suggests that Mary may have been a daughter of William & Jane Battey.

    Children:
    1. Jonathan Remington was born 10 Jul 1749, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died Jul 1787.
    2. Dinah Remington was born 10 May 1751, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    3. Catherine Remington was born 18 May 1754, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    4. 2. Benedict Remington was born 20 Apr 1756, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 10 Dec 1819, Mendon, MA.
    5. Mary Remington was born 26 Apr 1758, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    6. Tiddeman H. Remington was born 9 Feb 1760, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died Between 1842 and 16 Feb 1843, Mendon, MA.
    7. Gershom Remington was born 28 Feb 1762, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Jul 1790.
    8. Clemence Remington was born 16 Apr 1766, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 12 Jan 1838.

  3. 6.  Daniel Southwick, III was born 1721 (son of Daniel Southwick, II); died 11 Mar 1804.

    Notes:

Daniel was "of Mendon, MA" at the time of his daughter's marriage.

Daniel married Ruth Mussey Abt 2 Dec 1742, Smithfield, RI. Ruth (daughter of James Mussey and Judith Whitehouse) was born 18 Dec 1722, Capporpus, ME; died 16 Jan 1790. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Ruth Mussey was born 18 Dec 1722, Capporpus, ME (daughter of James Mussey and Judith Whitehouse); died 16 Jan 1790.

    Notes:

The birth record in the Battey family papers says Ruth was born 18th of 12 month 1722; that can mean either December or February, depending on the dating system used by the person who recorded (or copied) the dates. If it was copied from the original as is, it means February.

    Notes:

According to the Battey Family Papers, Daniel and Ruth were married on the 2nd 12m 1742. Depending on which month they observed as the first month (Jan, new style, or Mar, old style), this could mean they were married in either Feb or Dec.

    Children:
    1. David Southwick was born 27 Sep 1743, Mendon, MA; died 19 May 1746, Mendon, MA.
    2. Elisabeth Southwick was born 29 Mar 1746.
    3. Jane Southwick was born 14 Sep 1748, Mendon, MA; died 24 Jun 1772.
    4. Hannah Southwick was born 19 Mar 1749/50, Mendon, MA; died 10 Apr 1792, Mendon, MA.
    5. 3. Ruth Southwick was born 20 Mar 1755, Mendon, MA; died 10 Jun 1813, Mendon, MA.
    6. Judith Southwick was born 23 Oct 1757, Mendon, MA; died 11 Feb 1837, Uxbridge, MA.
    7. Lydia Southwick was born 4 Feb 1761, Mendon, MA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Gershom Remington was born 3 Dec 1690, Jamestown, RI (son of Stephen Remington and Penelope Parker); died Aft 1736.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
The original birth record at Jamestown reads: "Gershum Remmenton sun of Stephen & Pennelipy 3 December 1690."

Land records show Gershom Remington signing transactions with his wife, Clemence, on 31 Dec 1733. Some genealogists have her name as Catherine. Was Catherine a second wife; or, perhaps simply the name was misread (?).

In 1735 Gershom was Ensign of the Militia for Jamestown, and later was promoted to Lieutenant on the resignation of William Battey; again he served in this position in 1736.

Was there another daughter named Aase or Acie? Here is this listing from the RI Cemetery Database:

    REMINGTON AASE 1722c - 29 NOV 1744 JM002

Gershom married Clemence Battey 13 Feb 1712/13, Jamestown, RI. Clemence (daughter of Samson Battey and Dinah Havens) was born 4 Jul 1695, Jamestown, RI; died Aft Dec 1733. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Clemence Battey was born 4 Jul 1695, Jamestown, RI (daughter of Samson Battey and Dinah Havens); died Aft Dec 1733.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
According to the Jamestown birth record, Clemence was the 4th daughter of Samson & Dinah Battey. As the wife of Gershom Remington, her name has been given as both Clemence and Catherine. I am making an assumption that Gershom's wife was Clemence Battey, whose birth was recorded in the official Jamestown Proprietors Records, Vol. 1, p. 1. The Jamestown birth record has the name as "Clemence Batty." It seems obvious to me that this is the Clemence who married Gershom Remington, especially since they named a daughter Dinah, and Clemence Battey's mother was named Dinah. I have no further proof of her identity, other than this concurrence of data: names, time, and location.

    Notes:

BSR says Gershom married Catherine Clemence on 13 Feb 1713, Jamestown (no source noted). However, in some documents she is referred to as Clemence. Jamestown records identify their children as "of Gershom & Clemens" or Clemence. I have made an assumption that she is Clemence Battey, based on their dates of birth and the given names Clemence & Dinah, found in both the Battey and Remington families.

    Children:
    1. Benedict Remington was born 5 Feb 1714/15, Jamestown, RI; died 22 Nov 1744; was buried , Town Cemetery, Jamestown, RI.
    2. Dinah Remington was born Between 17 Aug 1716 and 1717, Jamestown, RI.
    3. Abigail Remington was born 14 Aug 1718.
    4. Phebe Remington was born Abt 1720, Jamestown, RI.
    5. 4. John Remington was born 7 Feb 1723/24, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Nov 1809, Newport, RI.
    6. Mary Remington was born Abt 1725; died Aft 6 Nov 1773.
    7. Stephen Remington was born Abt 1730.
    8. Gershom Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1740; died Abt Dec 1792, Jamestown, RI.

  3. 12.  Daniel Southwick, II was born 1671 (son of Daniel Southwick, I and Esther Boyce); died 1733.
    Children:
    1. 6. Daniel Southwick, III was born 1721; died 11 Mar 1804.

  4. 14.  James Mussey was born 18 Jul 1684, Capporpus, ME; died 30 May 1753, Mendon, MA.

    Notes:

He was born 18th of the 7th month 1684. I don't know if the individual who recorded this date in the Battey family papers used the old dating system (Julian) or the new (Gregorian); so it is either July or September.

According to the Battey family papers, there were 9 children born to this couple.

James married Judith Whitehouse Abt 21 Sep 1705, Dover, ME. Judith was born 7 Sep 1684, Dover, ME; died 22 May 1753, Mendon, MA. [Group Sheet]

  5. 15.  Judith Whitehouse was born 7 Sep 1684, Dover, ME; died 22 May 1753, Mendon, MA.

    Notes:

She was born 7th of the 9th month 1684. I don't know if the individual who recorded this date in the Battey family papers used the old dating system (Julian) or the new (Gregorian); so it is either September or November.

    Notes:

The Battey Family Papers give the date of marriage as 21 of the 9th month 1705. I don't know if the person who recorded the date in the family papers used the old Julian style of dating, in which case it would be November; or the Gregorian, meaning September.

    Children:
    1. Mary (1) Mussey was born 2 Jul 1706, Salisbury, ME; died 23 Apr 1708, Dover, ME.
    2. Mary (2) Mussey was born 11 Sep 1708, Dover, ME.
    3. Lydia Mussey was born 14 Apr 1710, Dover, ME.
    4. Elisabeth (1) Mussey was born 28 Aug 1713, Dover, ME; died 19 May 1715, Dover, ME.
    5. Thomas Mussey was born 12 Feb 1714/15, Dover, ME.
    6. James Mussey was born 7 Oct 1717, Dover, ME.
    7. Elisabeth (2) Mussey was born 6 Jul 1720, Capporpus, ME.
    8. 7. Ruth Mussey was born 18 Dec 1722, Capporpus, ME; died 16 Jan 1790.
