  1. 1.  Ruth Briggs was born 6 Jan 1769 (daughter of John Briggs, II and Elizabeth Bailey).

    Notes:

    She may have married Joseph N. Remington.

    See notes for the other Ruth Briggs also born in 1769. They were first cousins, one of whom married Joseph N. Remington. I have not yet determined which one, as there are clues which could point to either one.

  1. 2.  John Briggs, II was born 17 Nov 1744, North Kingstown, RI (son of John Briggs, I and Jemima Tarbox); died Aft 1820, Milo, Yates County, NY.

    Notes:

    John and his family came to New York from Rhode Island probably with the first settlement of "Friends" in 1788, along with his cousin Peleg Briggs and family. They located at Milo Center. They were followers of Jemima Wilkinson, the "Universal Friend," a sort of Messiah figure. A number of families left Rhode Island in the late 1700s and migrated to New York State to found what they called the New Jerusalem, located in Yates County. They were all a part of this sect or cultic offshoot of the Quakers.

    The History of Yates County says that John & Elizabeth came to NY with five children. (RIGR, Vol. 8 No. 4, p. 332)

    John is in the DAR Patriot Index for Revolutionary War Civil Service.

    Notes:

    According to McPartland's "History of East Greenwich," Richard Briggs and his family lived on South Road.

    His date of birth is given as 1 Feb 1675 in RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 15, p. 303 ("A Line of Descent from John Spencer of East Greenwich, RI").

    The will of Richard Briggs of East Greenwich is dated 9 Mar 1733. It mentions his wife Experience; sons Richard, Francis, John, Caleb, Philip, & Daniel; daughters Sarah Aylesworth, Ann King, Mary Briggs, Audrey Briggs; and grandsons Richard Briggs, Caleb Tarbox, & Richard Matteson.

    Richard married Susannah Spencer 23 Sep 1700, East Greenwich, RI. Susannah (daughter of John Spencer and Susannah Unknown) was born 1 Dec 1681; died Between 1715 and 1725. [Group Sheet]

    John and his family came to East Greenwich about 1695.

    It is not certain that his wife's maiden name was Gardiner.

    I have estimated the birth years of John & Elizabeth's children, except for John IV.

  5. 12.  Hugh BAILEY was born Abt 1663, Little Compton, RI (son of William BAILEY, II and Grace PARSONS); died 3 Aug 1724, East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

    Hugh Bailey was made a freeman of the Colony at Newport 2 May 1702. He came to East Greenwich from Newport sometime between 1696 and 1702. It has been reported that all of his children were by his first wife, Anna. His second wife was named Abigail Williams. However, the town records in East Greenwich suggest that he may have had a second wife named Ann, because while the birth entry for William says "eldest son of Hugh and Anna," the entry for Samuel says "eldest son of Hugh and Ann." The seven-year gap between the first two sons may allow for this possibility, also. Information on his family can be found in "The History of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, 1677-1960, With Related Genealogy" by Martha R. McPartland, p. 264; and in "Records of the Bailey Family" by Hannah C. (Bailey) Hopkins.
