Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Harriett Remington was born 16 May 1824, Hartland, VT (daughter of Jeremiah Remington and Harriett Thayer); died Bef 1 Jun 1860.

    Notes:

If indeed it is this Harriet who married Gates T. Embury (or Emery), her middle initials are E. C., according to the marriage record.

Gates is in NH without her in the 1860 census, so I have assumed she died.

Harriett married Gates T. Embury 11 May 1845, Haverhill, MA. Gates was born Abt 1822, NH; died Aft 1 Jun 1860. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

No ages or parents' names are given in the marriage record.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Jeremiah Remington was born 6 Dec 1805, Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT (son of Joseph Remington and Loranna Griffiths); died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Jeremiah, 44, and Polly, 45 (his second wife?), are living in Chester, Warren, NY, with daughters Sylvia 18 & Mary 6. They are near Jeremiah's brother William and his family, and their father, Joseph.

In 1880, Jerry & Polly Remington, ages 74 & 75, are still living at Chester, Warren Co., NY. Jerry is a shoemaker.

In his daughter Fanny's marriage record at Lowell, MA, he is called Jereboam.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me -- Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher -- and/or to other sources as noted herein.)

This Joseph Remington is probably the one listed in the 1810 Federal Census at Wallingford, Rutland, VT: 1 FWM<10, 1 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 26-44, 3 FWF<10, 1 FWF 26-44; total 7. Also, Stephen & Joshua Remington (likely his brothers) are listed in the same town.

In the 1850 Federal Census, this Joseph appears to be the Joseph Remington, age 84 b. MA, living at Chester, Warren, NY, with Wiliam Remington, 30 b. VT, and Almira 35, b. PA and their daughter Laura A. 8, b. NY. They are next door to Jeremiah 44 & Polly 45 Remington, and their two (presumed) daughters, Sylvia & Mary.

This Joseph has often been confused with Joseph Remington of Windsor, VT, our closer relative, who, by his own affidavit, was born (about) 13 June 1757 at Hopkinton, RI.

Joseph married Loranna Griffiths Abt 1795. Loranna (daughter of Jeremiah Griffiths and Eunice Unknown) was born Abt 1779, VT; died Bef 1 Jun 1850. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me -- Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher -- and/or to other sources as noted herein. Some of the information on this family came from Lois Remington Smith in "A Remington Family History.")

Joshua Remington, Sr. was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

The family moved from Abington, MA, to Cummington, MA, sometime between 1772 and 1776. Joshua's three lots in northwest Cummington are in the area known as Remington's Hill (also called Bryant Mt., after the poet William Cullen Bryant who was born in Cummington).

In 1780 there was a controversy concerning Joshua Remington in the local church, in which his name appears in the church records quite a bit. Among other accusations was that he was causing schisms in the church by his charges against the pastor.

Joshua and family are in the 1800 census, but not the 1810. His son Benjamin was appointed Administrator of Joshua's estate on 15 Oct 1811 (Probate records of Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA).

Lois Remington Smith has noted his date of death as Sep 1811.
