    Notes:

    See "A Line of Descent from Thomas Stafford of Warwick" in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, by A. G. Beaman. According to Beaman, Thomas came to Plymouth Colony about 1626, then to Providence, and soon afterward to Warwick where he lived the rest of his life.

    Note copied by Trish Harmon, posted on RIKENT mailing list: "Thomas, father of Samuel, was in Plymouth, Massachusetts as early as 1626, of Portsmouth and Newport, Rhode Island in 1638, then of Providence, Rhode Island where he constructed the first grist mill at the mouth of the Moosausick River; he moved to Old Warwick from Providence in 1650 and at the head of Mill Cove built a grist mill for the settlers. Was admitted freeman in 1638 (source: Stukely Westcott book by J. Bullock)."

  3. 10.  Stukeley WESTCOTT was born 1592, Yeovil, Somerset, England (son of Stephen Guy WESTCOTT and Mary STUKELEY); died 12 Jan 1676/77, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

    In 1635 Stukeley and his family accompanied the family of William Arnold to New England. Stukeley came from England to Salem, MA, where he was a freeman in 1636; his name is given in the records as "Stuky Wesket." He joined the Baptists and was banished from Massachusetts. He soon joined Roger Williams in Providence, RI, where he was one of the grantees in Roger Williams's deed of 8 Oct 1638. He signed the Providence agreement in 1640. He was also one of the founding members of the First Baptist Church in America. Stukeley later located with Samuell Gorton's group at Warwick, where records show he lived on 5 June 1648. He was Commissioner 1651-1653, and in 1655 and 1660. He was Assistant in 1653, and Deputy for Warwick in 1671. During King Philip's War he left Warwick and went to Portsmouth for safety. There he made his will on 12 Jan 1676/77, and died the same day.

    Notes:

    John Greene came to New England with his family in 1635. On a 1650 map of Providence, his name is shown as owner on one of the original house lots on Towne Steeet. He became a Major in the Rhode Island Militia, Representative to the Rhode Island General Assembly for 12 years, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, agent for the colony in England, and Deputy Governor from 1690 to 1700.     "He became a large landowner in his own right as well as by inheritance, and was prominently active in all interests of town and Colony. It was written of him at a later period: 'He was a man of great weight of thought, sharpness of wit, aptness of action, and adroitness of understanding.' " (See "The Greenes of Rhode Island" compiled by Louise Brownell Clarke, New York: Knickerbocker Press, 1903, p. 59)

    His will, dated Dec 1706, says he is in his 87th year, and his wife in her 80th. He names sons Richard, Samuel, Peter, & Job; and daughters Deborah, Philip(a), Ann, Catherine, & Adere; granddaughter Mary Dyer; and refers to Philip(a)'s children but not by name.

    Notes:

    According to the book on Roger Williams' descendants, John & Mary Sayles had six children and lived on Aquidneck Island. Some lists of their children do not include Mary, Anne, or Richard, the latter two probably having died young. The dates of birth of most of these children have not yet been confirmed. When the next book is published by the Roger Williams Family Association, more research will be possible.

    John & Mary are buried near Easton's Beach, Middletown, RI.
