Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Thomas Russell Remington was born 30 Apr 1811, RI (son of Russell Remington and Rachael Colvin); died 18 Oct 1853; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

This family appears to be listed twice in the 1850 Federal Census, at both Warwick, RI (5 Sep); and Scituate, RI (20 Sep) -- except George, who is already married, is not listed at Scituate.

    Warwick, 1850:
    Thomas Remmington 42
    Almira Remmington 42
    George Remmington 20
    Abby Remmington 18
    Henry Remmington 16
    Horace Remmington 13
    Andrew Remmington 12
    John Remmington 9

Scituate, 1850 (ancestry has mis-transcribed the surname, but the image shows Remington):
    Thomas Kennington 41
    Almira Kennington 41
    Abby Kennington 18
    Henry Kennington 16
    Albert Kennington 12
    Horace Kennington 9
    Andrew J Kennington 6
    John H Kennington 4

George is listed separately at Warick, with his wife and child:
    George T Remmington 20
    Betsey P Remmington 26
    Byron D Remmington 1

It must be the same family, because most of the names are the same, as are the ages -- with slight differences for three of the children.

Perhaps they were living at Warwick with (or next to) Susan Remington but in that month moved to Scituate.

Thomas is not listed in the RI Death Index.

Thomas married Almira Dyer Abt 1830. Almira (daughter of John Dyer and Patience Sprague) was born Abt 1809, RI; died 15 Dec 1887, Auburn, RI; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  1. 2.  Russell Remington was born 12 Jul 1776 (son of Jonathan Remington and Mary Havens); died 26 Jul 1817; was buried , Historical Cemetery 540 "lost, " Remington Lot, Hope Ave., Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Russell & Rachel lived in Cranston.

Cranston Probate Bk. 2, p. 315: whereas Russell Remington late of Cranston, deceased, died Intestate, the court appoints Mrs. Rachel Remington, widow of Deceased, administratrix; dated 9 August 1817.

At least one person has Abby (Remington) Vose as a daughter of this couple; she was born c 12 Feb 1809. This needs more research to confirm.

Russell married Rachael Colvin Abt 1810. Rachael (daughter of Benedict Colvin and Hannah Benedict) was born 22 May 1769, Coventry, RI; died 1 Dec 1837; was buried , Colvin Cemetery, Colvintown Rd., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Rachael Colvin was born 22 May 1769, Coventry, RI (daughter of Benedict Colvin and Hannah Benedict); died 1 Dec 1837; was buried , Colvin Cemetery, Colvintown Rd., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

Cranston Probate Bk. 2, p. 315: whereas Russell Remington late of Cranston, deceased, died Intestate, the court appoints Mrs. Rachel Remington, widow of Deceased, administratrix; dated 9 August 1817.

In the 1820 Federal Census, Rachael Colvin is listed at Cranston with one son and one daughter, both age 10-15.

    Children:
    1. 1. Thomas Russell Remington was born 30 Apr 1811, RI; died 18 Oct 1853; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.
    2. Hannah Remington was born Abt 1812, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Jonathan Remington was born 28 Dec 1743, RI (son of Thomas Remington, Sr. and Mary Collins); died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Scituate Land Evidence Vol. 8 p. 39 records a transaction in which Jonathan Remington received a deed on 11 April 1785 from Christopher and Wait Lippitt. Probably it refers to this Jonathan. Since his great-grandmother was Martha Lippitt, probably Christopher was a relative.

The following may pertain to this Jonathan:

In the 1800 Federal Census, he is listed at Scituate as Jonathan Remmington (same page as Joseph Remington), with a household as follows: 1 FWM 45+, 2 FWF <10, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44, and 1 FWF 45+.

In 1810 he is listed at Scituate as Johnathan Remington, but the household consists of just an adult male and an adult female.

On 20 March 1776, Elisha & Desire Clark of North Kingstown purchased land in Exeter from Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman. Was it this Jonathan? If so, he would have been about 33. But see other Jonathan Remingtons on this tree.

Boyd Scott Remington shows two marriages for him, so I am entering them, although no sources are noted (needs further research).

Jonathan married Mary Havens 15 Jun 1769, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Nathaniel Havens) was born Abt 1747, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Havens was born Abt 1747, RI (daughter of Nathaniel Havens); died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Mary was "of Nathaniel, of North Kingstown."

I have made an assumption that she is the wife implied in the 1800 and 1810 censuses.

    Notes:

1769 Remington, Jonathan, of Warwick, and Mary Havens, of Nathaniel, of North Kingstown; m. by Eld. Charles Holden, June 15, 1769. Vol. 2 p. 152, Marriage Warwick

    Children:
    1. Lucy Remington was born Abt 1770; died 7 May 1838; was buried , David Colvin Cemetery, Glenview Ct., Scituate, RI.
    2. Alta Mary Remington was born 1772, Scituate, RI.
    3. Peleg Remington was born Abt 1775; died 16 Dec 1847; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.
    4. 2. Russell Remington was born 12 Jul 1776; died 26 Jul 1817; was buried , Historical Cemetery 540 "lost, " Remington Lot, Hope Ave., Scituate, RI.

  3. 6.  Benedict Colvin was born Abt 1746 (son of Thomas Colvin and Frances Briggs); died 4 Oct 1835; was buried , Cemetery 61, Abbott-Colvin Lot, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that these dates in the RI Cemetery Database belong to this individual.

Benedict Colvin was a captain in the Revolutionary War. He was in charge of a company from Coventry.

Benedict married Hannah Benedict Abt 1768. Hannah was born Abt 1746; died 9 Jun 1832; was buried , Cemetery 61, Abbott-Colvin Lot, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Hannah Benedict was born Abt 1746; died 9 Jun 1832; was buried , Cemetery 61, Abbott-Colvin Lot, Coventry, RI.
    Children:
    1. Catherine Colvin
    2. Amelia Colvin was born Abt 2 Nov 1767; died 28 Nov 1821; was buried , Historical Cemetery 054, Colvin Lot, Coventry, RI.
    3. 3. Rachael Colvin was born 22 May 1769, Coventry, RI; died 1 Dec 1837; was buried , Colvin Cemetery, Colvintown Rd., Coventry, RI.
    4. Amy Colvin was born Abt 1772; died 28 Nov 1859.
    5. Hannah Colvin was born Abt 1774; died 1857.
    6. Nancy Colvin was born Abt Aug 1780; died 27 Aug 1837; was buried , Historical Cemetery 054, Colvin Lot, Coventry, RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Thomas Remington, Sr. was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI (son of Joseph Remington, I and Margaret Burlingame); died Aft 1774.

    Notes:

Thomas and his heirs received land in Scituate from his father Joseph, 15 March 1743 (Scituate Land Evidence, Vol. 3, p. 27). This was the same land that Joseph had bought in 1731.

There is a record at Scituate dated 28 Jul 1759 of Thomas, resident of Scituate, and his family moving to Portsmouth, RI. (source Barbara Chase)

On 21 Feb 1761, Thomas Remington of Portsmouth sold land and house in Scituate to George Roberts of Warwick. (Sc. Land Ev. Bk 5 p. 319; source Barbara Chase)

He may be the Thomas Remington, son of Joseph, listed at Warwick in the 1774 RI Census. If so, this would mean that he moved from Portsmouth to Warwick.

He may also be one of the 4 Thomas Remingtons listed in the 1790 census at Warwick.

The births of five of Thomas & Mary's children are recorded at Scituate. However, they may have been born elsewhere and recorded there after the family moved to Scituate.

Thomas married Mary Collins 23 Nov 1740, Providence, RI. Mary (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1720; died Aft 29 Jul 1754. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary Collins was born Abt 1720 (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown); died Aft 29 Jul 1754.

    Notes:

She probably is a daughter of Elisha Collins; see his Scituate will dated 31 Oct 1778, proved 3 Dec 1778.

    Notes:

I am making the assumption that the Thomas and Mary whose marriage is recorded in Scituate, belongs to this family group, since this Thomas had a brother Lippitt, whose marriage was also recorded in the same book. The notation implies that they were married in Providence, but that the marriage was recorded in Scituate several years later. The Scituate record says 20 Nov.

Providence records this marriage: Thomas, of Providence, and Mary Collins, of Scituate, m. by William Burton, Justice, Nov. 23, 1740. (see Arnold's VRs for Providence - Marriages p. 157)

REMINGTON Thomas, and Mary Collins, of Eliza; m. by William Burton, Justice, Nov. 20, 1740 (Scituate VRs).

He may have been the Thomas Remington who later moved to Portsmouth (needs more research); see this note from Barbara Chase: "Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 1; p. 409 - 28 Jul 1759 - Certificate to Thomas Remington who has 'moved with his family to Portsmouth' and acknowledged that he, his wife, and children were proper inhabitants of the town of Scituate."

    Children:
    1. Margret Remington was born 18 May 1742, RI.
    2. 4. Jonathan Remington was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.
    3. Thomas Remington, Jr. was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831.
    4. Prudence Remington was born 16 Mar 1748/49, RI; died 27 Sep 1816, RI; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI.
    5. Joseph Lippitt Remington was born 15 Jun 1751, Scituate, RI.
    6. Mary Remington was born Abt 23 Mar 1753, RI; died 14 Jan 1847; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI.
    7. John Remington was born 29 Jul 1754, RI.

  3. 10.  Nathaniel Havens
    Children:
    1. 5. Mary Havens was born Abt 1747, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.

  4. 12.  Thomas Colvin was born 1710 (son of Samuel Colvin and Phebe Unknown); died 24 Jan 1805.

    Notes:

One online family tree has Thomas's parents as Samuel Colvin and Phebe Briggs. I have not researched this to confirm it.

Thomas married Frances Briggs abt. 1735. Frances (daughter of James Briggs and Sarah Wickes) was born 1714; died 10 Dec 1777. [Group Sheet]

  5. 13.  Frances Briggs was born 1714 (daughter of James Briggs and Sarah Wickes); died 10 Dec 1777.

    Notes:

One online tree has Frances's parents as James & Sarah Briggs. I have not researched this to confirm it.

    Children:
    1. Sarah Colvin was born 20 Oct 1743; died Nov 1826.
    2. 6. Benedict Colvin was born Abt 1746; died 4 Oct 1835; was buried , Cemetery 61, Abbott-Colvin Lot, Coventry, RI.
