    Notes:

    James's will mentions his wife Mary (not his first, by the wording); three children: Henry, Humility (Stafford), & Lucy. He also names 9 Greene grandchildren.

    Some online genealogies say he had a first wife named Mary Allen, and several children by her. If so, this Mary is his third wife.

    James married Humility Greene 14 Oct 1753. Humility (daughter of Henry Greene and Abigail Tripp) was born 12 Feb 1724/25, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI; died 7 Aug 1766. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    The will of James Greene of Coventry, yeoman, was dated 18 June 1770 and proved 22 June 1771. It mentions his wife Rebeckah, and the following children: Nathaniel, John, Isaac, James, Wardel, Charles, Othniel (dec'd), Patience Andrew, Rebeckah Andrew, & Jane Andrew; grandchildren James, s/o Wardel; Philip & Wardel, (prob. also) s/o Wardel; Job, s/o Charles; Charles & Othniel, brothers and (prob. also) s/o Charles; William & Othniel, s/o Othniel (dec'd); Mary, d/o Othniel (dec'd); James, s/o Rebeckah Andrew; Almy Johnson; James & Abigail Greene, c/o Isaac.

    There is no explanation for who Almy's parents are, but the will of Patience Andrew, James's daughter, also mentions Amey Johnson, daughter of Elkanah Johnson. Apparently one of James's daughters had a daughter Amey by Elkanah Johnson.

    "James lived at Maroon Swamp which is the area of modern day Coventry Center north of Harkney Hill. His wife Rebecca was the daughter of Nathaniel Cahoone, who was a resident of Warwick, R.I. in the early 1700

    Notes:

    The will of Rebecca Green of Coventry, widow, was dated 9 June 1784 and proved 11 Nov 1786. It mentions sons Nathaniel, James, Wardwell, John, & Isaac; and daughters Rebecca Andrew, w/o William Andrew; and Jane Andrew, w/o Elnathan Andrew; as well as two granddaughters named Rebecca Andrew, daughters of her two daughters Rebecca & Jane. Other granddaughters mentioned are: Zilpha Green, w/o Stephen; Vilate Potter, w/o George; & Rhoda Matteson, w/o Rufus.

    Notes:

    Some genealogies have this John Greene as a son of John "Quidnessett" Greene, but other more recent researchers strongly dispute that. A closer study of land records indicates that John Jr., the son of John "Quidnessett" Greene, was living in Newport, and may in fact have died earlier than this John, who lived in East Greenwich and then the Harkney Hill section of Coventry.

    William E. Wright is one of may compilers of Greene genealogies. His book and web site provide a comprehensive analysis of other Greene family researchers, which can be evaluated and compared by interested individuals.

    However, as further research comes to light in the future, descendants may have to yet again change their genealogy data!

    Notes:

    Her name appears as Abigail D. in some sources, but most genealogies have agreed that she was a daughter of Usal/Uzal Wardwell of Bristol, RI. I have concurred for the present.

    One genealogy says she was born at Ipswich.

    Abigail died after 19 Oct 1739, when she was named in the will of her stepmother.

    Notes:

    His death record at Bristol: "WORDALL Uzal, 93y., Oct. 25, 1732"

    The will of Uzal Wardwell, administered 7 Dec 1732 at Bristol, RI, mentions his wife Grace and five sons: Joseph, Uzal, James, William, & Benjamin. No daughters are mentioned, although it is known that he had daughters.

    I am not sure which of his children were born of his second wife, although I am fairly sure that Sarah was Grace's daughter because she and her husband are named as executors in Grace's will. Also, I have found James in the Bristol birth records, as a son of Uzal & Grace.

    The surname is spelled variously as Wardwell, Wordwell, Wordall, Wordell, & Wardel.

    Uzal came from Ipswich, MA, and settled in Bristol, RI, where it is said he was an innkeeper.

    Uzal married Unknown Wife Abt 1665. Unknown was born Abt 1643; died Bef 1682. [Group Sheet]
