    Notes:

    Enfield is mentioned as "my daughter Enfield Matteson, dec'd," in the will of her father John Greene, dated 15 Aug 1754.

    Enfield married James Matteson 2 Mar 1737/38, East Greenwich, RI. James (son of Henry Matteson, Jr. and Judith Weaver) was born 20 Mar 1711/12; died 1795. [Group Sheet]

    1. Uriah Matteson was born 23 Jan 1738/39.
    2. Silas Matteson was born 11 Dec 1740, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 17 Mar 1821.
    3. Ann Matteson was born 8 Feb 1741/42, West Greenwich, RI.

  1. 2.  John Greene, Jr. was born 9 Apr 1688, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI (son of John GREENE and Abigail WARDWELL); died 3 Oct 1756.

    Notes:

    The will of John Greene of West Greenwich was dated 15 Aug 1754, proved 6 Nov 1756 at West Greenwich, RI. John's will mentions his wife, Mary Greene -- "who received household goods which she brought to me when I married her" (clue that she was not his first wife). He mentions 5 sons and 5 daughters, as well as several grandchildren; sons named are Silas dec'd, John, Timothy, Samuel, & Nathan; dtrs named are Enfield Matteson dec'd, Ann Nichols, Mary Johnson, Margaret Matteson, & Hester Weeks (Wickes). (Possibly another dtr. Elizabeth died young.) Grandchildren mentioned: Obediah, und 21, and 3 unnamed dtrs under 18, all of Silas dec'd; Anne Matteson und 18, and Josiah & Silas Matteson, all of Enfield dec'd. He does not mention any grandchildren who are children of his living children.

    I have made an assumption that John's second wife was Mary Almy (see marriage notes).

    John married Ann "Nancy" Hill 30 Nov 1713, East Greenwich, RI. Ann (daughter of Henry HILL and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1692; died Aft 1734. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Some genealogies have this John Greene as a son of John "Quidnessett" Greene, but other more recent researchers strongly dispute that. A closer study of land records indicates that John Jr., the son of John "Quidnessett" Greene, was living in Newport, and may in fact have died earlier than this John, who lived in East Greenwich and then the Harkney Hill section of Coventry.

    William E. Wright is one of may compilers of Greene genealogies. His book and web site provide a comprehensive analysis of other Greene family researchers, which can be evaluated and compared by interested individuals.

    However, as further research comes to light in the future, descendants may have to yet again change their genealogy data!

    Notes:

    Her name appears as Abigail D. in some sources, but most genealogies have agreed that she was a daughter of Usal/Uzal Wardwell of Bristol, RI. I have concurred for the present.

    One genealogy says she was born at Ipswich.

    Abigail died after 19 Oct 1739, when she was named in the will of her stepmother.

  3. 6.  Henry HILL was born 24 Jun 1661, Warwick, RI (son of Jonathan HILL, Sr. and Mary SHERWOOD).

    Notes:

    Henry & Elizabeth lived at East Greenwich. On 12 Oct 1724 he sold 50 acres in East Greenwich to Henry Gardiner of South Kingstown (Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of RI, p. 98).

    According to the Hill manuscript at NK Library, Henry was living in NK in 1680 and 1687; he also lived in Warwick and EG.

    Henry married Elizabeth Unknown Abt 1690. Elizabeth was born Abt 1668. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    His death record at Bristol: "WORDALL Uzal, 93y., Oct. 25, 1732"

    The will of Uzal Wardwell, administered 7 Dec 1732 at Bristol, RI, mentions his wife Grace and five sons: Joseph, Uzal, James, William, & Benjamin. No daughters are mentioned, although it is known that he had daughters.

    I am not sure which of his children were born of his second wife, although I am fairly sure that Sarah was Grace's daughter because she and her husband are named as executors in Grace's will. Also, I have found James in the Bristol birth records, as a son of Uzal & Grace.

    The surname is spelled variously as Wardwell, Wordwell, Wordall, Wordell, & Wardel.

    Uzal came from Ipswich, MA, and settled in Bristol, RI, where it is said he was an innkeeper.

    Uzal married Unknown Wife Abt 1665. Unknown was born Abt 1643; died Bef 1682. [Group Sheet]

  3. 12.  Jonathan HILL, Sr. was born Abt Jun 1640, Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA (son of John HILL and Frances TILLESTON); died Bef Jul 1690, Prudence Island, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

    Note: I am not absulutely sure that Jonathan Hill of RI is a son of John & Frances Hill. However, I have linked him to this couple based on genealogical information sent to me by Hill descendants.

    Jonathan & Mary Hill lived at Warwick, Portsmouth, and Prudence Island.

    Jonathan & Mary may have had another son named Thomas in the early 1650s, as the book "The History of East Greenwich" tells of a Thomas Hill who was in Potowomut by 1680, in business partnership with James Greene.

    Jonathan may have been born earlier than 1640, possibly closer to 1630.

    It is believed that Jonathan married twice, to two women named Mary: Mary Sharwood (Sherwood) and Mary Bassett.

    From another genealogy: This or another Jonathan Hill may have died 2 Feb 1710, and his wife died 12 Sep 1715. (This needs more research.)
