  1. 2.  Peter P. Remington was born 7 Apr 1783, Newport, RI (son of John Remington and Sarah Hopkins); died 24 Aug 1864, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

Peter P. Remington's name and/or signature appears in many Newport wills during the 1800s. For example:
witness to will of John Shaw 24 Aug 1812
witness to will of James Center 21 Jan 1814
witness to will of Mary (Tilley) Swinburne 2 Nov 1828 (his wife's aunt)
witness to will of Joseph Sanford 1838
"friend" in will of Mary Dayton 1842
"executor" in will of Myra Allen d. 26 June 1844
"executor" of will of Jonathan Bailey 1848

Peter P. Remington was Overseer of the Poor in Newport, 1840 and 1842; perhaps other years, too. (source: documents indexed online by Jamestown Historical Society)

In the 1850 Federal Census, P.P. Remington 67 & his wife Rualmi C. 62 are living in Newport, RI, with Sarah Lawton 15.

In 1851-1852, after his wife died, Peter was boarding with his son. (source: "Lydia's Letters, 10 More" compiled by Margie Brown and Virginia Remington Rich)

In the 1860 Federal Census, Peter P. Remington is age 78, and living with his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah H. & Samuel Carr, and their family, at Newport, RI.

Peter married Rualmy Coffin Tilley Abt 1810. Rualmy (daughter of James Tilley and Mary Barker) was born 1789; died 1 Feb 1851. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Rualmy Coffin Tilley was born 1789 (daughter of James Tilley and Mary Barker); died 1 Feb 1851.

    Notes:

I do not know whether Rualmy was born of William's first marriage, to Ruhamy Coffin, or if she was a child of the second marriage, to Mary. Often when a spouse died, a subsequent child of the appropriate sex born of the next marriage was named after the deceased spouse. Thus, it is difficult to tell when Rualmy (Coffin) Remington was born, as I can not find dates for her. It would seem that she was born either around Feb. 1787, when her father's first wife died (assuming she may have died in childbirth), or else in 1794 or after, based on the dates of birth for siblings William James and Mary.

    Children:
    1. Mary Tilley Remington was born 29 Aug 1811, Newport, RI; died 20 Oct 1887, Pawtuxet, RI; was buried , Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.
    2. Peter P. Remington was born 1815; died 1815.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Remington was born 6 Jan 1744/45, Jamestown, RI (son of John Remington and Abigail Greene); died 15 May 1807, Newport, RI; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

I am not absolutely sure that this date of death, or this spouse and children, belong to John Remington, son of John & Susanna. However, the family group was from Newport, which is just a short boat ride across the water from Jamestown, home of John & Susanna and their Remington forebears. Also, the names of at least three of the children (Benjamin, Abigail, Peter) reflect the names of the children and Remington forebears of John & Susanna. Lastly, the dates for both John & Sarah from the RI Cemetery database seem to coincide with the date of birth we have for John, and the marriage date of 1772.

Newenglandancestors.org, Jamestown Vital Records, has his date of birth as 6 Jan 1746.

John married Sarah Hopkins 30 Dec 1772, Newport, RI. Sarah was born Abt 1752; died 26 May 1792, Newport, RI; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Sarah Hopkins was born Abt 1752; died 26 May 1792, Newport, RI; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

Sarah Remington, wife of John, died at Newport in her 41st year (US Chronicle of 7 Jun 1792, in Arnold's).

    Notes:

    James N. Arnold's VRs has the marriage date as 31 Dec 1772 (Vol. 7, p. 361.

    Children:
    1. Hannah R. Remington was born 5 Apr 1775, Newport, RI; was buried , Island Cemetery, Warner St., Newport, RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  John Remington was born Abt 1705, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI (son of Stephen Remington and Penelope Parker); died Bef 9 Jan 1761.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

This is an estimate of John's date of birth. I have placed him in this family group primarily on the basis of the names of his children, which clearly seem to reflect Penelope Parker and her parents. I have found a birth record for neither John nor his presumed sister Hannah, but in her case the marriage record identifies her parents.

I am not absolutely sure that Susannah & Abigail were two wives of the same John Remington, but it is a reasonable assumption based on the Jamestown records, which admittedly are confusing at points.

Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart lists another child, Peleg, in this family group; but that may just be a guess, as Peleg is not in the vital records. BSR gives no date of birth for Peleg, but as his marriage was in 1772, he could possibly fit into this family group. Unfortunately, BSR notes no sources.

John married Abigail Greene 8 Aug 1743, Jamestown, RI. Abigail (daughter of David Greene and Sarah Barber) was born 25 Mar 1715, Jamestown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Abigail Greene was born 25 Mar 1715, Jamestown, RI (daughter of David Greene and Sarah Barber).

    Notes:

The births of Penelope and Sarah are not recorded in Jamestown records. However, the will of David Greene, Abigail's father, mentions by name his daughter Abigail Remington, as well as two granddaughters, both under 18: Penelope and Sarah Remington. The will is dated 21 Jul 1759; therefore, these two of Abigail's daughters must have been born in 1741 or later. His will does not mention the other children of Abigail.

    Notes:

They were married by Edward Carr, Warden.

Note that I am not sure which John Remington Abigail married; his parentage is assumed in my placing him here with these parents.

    Children:
    1. Abigail Remington was born Abt May 1743, Jamestown, RI.
    2. 4. John Remington was born 6 Jan 1744/45, Jamestown, RI; died 15 May 1807, Newport, RI; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI.
    3. Penelope Remington was born Abt 1747.
    4. Susannah Remington was born 17 May 1749, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 22 Jan 1797, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co, NY; was buried , Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY.
    5. Asca Remington was born 25 Jul 1751, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    6. Sarah Remington was born Abt 1753; died Aft 21 Jul 1759.

  3. 12.  William Tilley was born 19 Oct 1738, Newport, RI; died 14 Apr 1825; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

William is probably the son of William & Dorcas Tilley.

Deacon William Tilley had 17 children by his first wife, Elizabeth. Four died in infancy. No children were born of his subsequent two marriages.

His obituary in "The Newport Mercury" of 20 April 1825 says: "Died, on Sunday last, Deacon William Tilley, age 87 years. If 60 years of a conscientious discharge of religious and moral duties, joined to the endearing and affectionate domestic ties of husband, father, son, brother and friends, shall claim from our all wise and beneficent Creator, reward and mercy, he now enjoys all the heavenly felicity promised by the Gospel of Christ His life was a life of piety and usefulness, and to the last moments of that life, his faith and confidence was unshaken in Christ, the Son of God. He left a numerous progeny as well as numerous friends, to mourn his departure, 10 children, 79 grandchildren, and 44 great-grandchildren."

His gravestone inscription in the Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI, reads: "Having for 60 years manifested by his daily walk and conversation that he was a disciple of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, faithful in the discharge of his duty as a Christian, especially in the office of a deacon, to which he was early called by the 2nd Baptist Church, under the pastoral care of Elder Gardiner Thurston. The hoary head is a Crown of Glory when found in the ways of righteousness."

William married Elizabeth Rogers 1759. Elizabeth (daughter of Jeremiah Rogers and Patience Unknown) was born 7 Aug 1743, Middletown, RI; died 28 Aug 1800; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 13.  Elizabeth Rogers was born 7 Aug 1743, Middletown, RI (daughter of Jeremiah Rogers and Patience Unknown); died 28 Aug 1800; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

Her gravesone includes the following poem: "Comely as Rachel, fruitful as Leah, Prudent as Abigail, with Martha's care; Wise like Mary she chose that better part, True faith in Christ, and had a Lydia's heart."
