Generation: 2

  1. 2.  James Monroe Remington was born 6 Jun 1824, RI (son of Stephen Warner Remington and Sarah Raphael Randall); died 23 Dec 1905; was buried , Historical Cemetery 35, Glocester, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, James M. Remington is age 25, a wheelwright, living in Glocester with John & William Hawkins and their families, wheelwright & carriagesmith.

In the 1870 Federal Census, James M. & Elizabeth Remington, ages 46 CT & 42 MA, are living at Taunton, MA. They have a daughter Cora E., age 7 RI. James is a Gas fitter.

In the 1880 Federal Census, James and family are living on Summer St. in Taunton, Bristol County, MA: Jas. M. is 56, Maria E. is 52, and Cora E. is 16. His widowed mother Sarah, 80, is also with them.

  1. 4.  Stephen Warner Remington was born 2 Dec 1798, Johnston, RI (son of Caleb Remington, Sr. and Roby Warner); died Abt 8 May 1873, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Stephen Remington and his wife Sarah are age 50; son Orville is 9, and daughter Mary is 5. They are living in Ward 4, Providence, RI. In the 1870 Federal Census, Stephen W. Remington is age 71, and Sarah R. is 70. They are living in Ward 7, Providence, RI. Their son Orville, age 29, is with them. Thus, Stephen's date of death in the RI Death Index can't be correct (8 May 1863). Therefore, I am changing it to 1873.

He is probably the Stephen W. Remington who is in the Providence City Directory of 1836/7 as a cooper.

Stephen married Sarah Raphael Randall 15 Apr 1821, Johnston, RI. Sarah (daughter of George W. Randall and Betsey W. Keene) was born 21 Jan 1800, Johnston, RI; died 20 Dec 1880, Taunton, Bristol County, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Caleb was a Sergeant in the Revolution. According to a manuscript (Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots) at the Knight Library in Providence, Caleb served June 1775 - Aug 1780 in Capt. General's Cavaliers. It says he was buried on the Knapp place, next to the Hughes' residence, Hughesdale, Johnston, RI. (This manuscript is now at the RI Public Library, RI Collection)

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Caleb, sergeant, Providence County, all $120, rec $360, R. I. Militia, pl Oct. 24, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 86

I have estimated the birth years for some of Caleb's children.

There is a court document at the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, concerning $30 owed to Caleb Remington of Johnston, cooper & yeoman, by Henry Warner of Providence. The document is dated 10 January 1797. Perhaps Henry was a relative of Caleb's wife.

Capt. Caleb Remington was an innkeeper at Johnston. He also ran a blacksmith and coopering business. In 1808 he advertised his property and business for sale, with the intention of closing his business.

He appears to be living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male 10-15 (Stephen). 2 males 16-25 (Henry & ?), 1 male 45+ (Caleb), 2 females 10-15 (Elizabeth & ?), 2 females 16-25 (Roby Ann & Mary), and 1 female 45+ (wife Roby). The census was taken in August, and daughter Amy was married in April; so there are two unknown individuals listed.

In the 1830 census, he is likely the male age 80-90 living with Caleb Remington, Jr.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 6 Aug 1836: "Capt. Caleb Remington d. at Johnston, age 90, was in the Revolution."

Excerpt from "Club and Professional Life or Rhode Island" Vol. 1 pub. 1895 (at RI College library; copy at Roger Wms. Family Assoc.), article on Henry Adolphus Remington: "Capt. Caleb, of Johnston, Rhode Island, born 1748, served in the expedition to Rhode Island in 1778, under Capt. Benjamin Stack, and no braver heart ever fluttered in man than that which pulsated in the heart of this well-known revolutionary hero. Caleb Remington, of Johnston, was admitted as a master Mason of Manchester Lodge, Anthony, Rhode Island, Nov. 17th, 1809. The Remingtons were early settlers of Providence, Johnston and Cranston. One of the oldest houses now standing in the town of Johnston is the Remington farm house, which passed from Caleb, son of Capt. Caleb, father of Judge Remington, the pioneer Judge of the town, and is now in the possession of the only surviving member of the family, Miss Joanna Remington."

Caleb married Roby Warner Abt 1776. Roby (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs) was born 1755; died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]
