From the obituary: "A believer in good government, he was a member of Common Cause. He had been a longtime member of the First Unitarian Church in Wilmington. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Chicago and earned his PhD in organic chemistry from the same university in 1945. During the war, he worked for the War Department, researching ways to detect chemical warfare agents. After receiving his PhD, he went to work for the DuPont Company, first at Jackson Laboratory in Deepwater, NJ, and later at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE. His early work involved ways to dye nylon. His name is on 11 patents held by DuPont. In 1961, he conceived the idea for a reverse osmosis filtration system. He worked on the project for nine years; the product became Permasep. Permasep systems now desalinate well over a billion gallons of water a day worldwide, something of which Bill was very proud. In 1971, he took a leave of absence from DuPont and taught chemistry for 2 years at the Escuela Politecnica Nacional in Quito, Ecuador. He then returned to Wilmington, DE, and continued to work for DuPont until his retirement in 1982. An inveterate tinkerer, he took delight in figuring out how things worked and when needed, adapting, modifying, fixing, or otherwise altering them in his own way. Most often, they worked the way he wanted them to."

In the 1910 Federal Census, Roscoe C. Remington is age 23, living at Eureka Springs Ward 1, Carroll Co., Arkansas.

Roscoe's 1917 draft registration is signed "Roscoe Conkling Remington." He is described as of medium height, slender, with brown hair and blue eyes; age 30. He is a printer with News (?) Pub. Co., Buckeye City, OH. His 1942 draft registration form gives his address as 6127 Kimbark Ave., Chicago, Cook Co., IL. He is age 55. His wife's name is given as Lottie. His employer is How to Sell, Inc.

Roscoe arrived on the ship Empress of Scotland, sailing from Cherbourg, France, 29 June 1929, and arriving at Quebec, Canada, 6 July 1929. He was age 42 y 6 mo. The manifest gives his birthplace as Richland Township, Knox Co., OH, dob 25 Dec 1886. His address is given as 5 East First St., Mount Morris, IL.

In the Federal Census of 1930, the family is at Mount Morris, Ogle Co., IL: Roscoe C. 43 OH, Charlotte 38 South Africa, William 11 OH, Thomas 7 OH, and Celesta 5 OH. Roscoe is a printer.

Roscoe married Carlotta "Lottie" Ida Damm Sundberg Abt 1914. Carlotta was born 8 Nov 1891, South Africa; died 8 May 1990. [Group Sheet]

In the 1920 Federal Census, T. J. Remington, age 61, and Celesta Remington, age 58, are living at Winslow, Washington Co., AR. Their 3-year-old grandson, John (?) F. Remington, born in MI, is living with them.

In 1930, Thomas J. Remington is age 71, widowed, and living with his widowed sister Margaret A. Thompson, age 80, in Danville, Knox Co., OH.

Thomas is the grandfather of Virginia Mae (Remington) Rich, who sent me the Remington family portrait.

Thomas married Celesta Jackson May 1883. Celesta (daughter of William Jackson) was born 17 Nov 1861, OH; died 25 Oct 1929; was buried , Workman Cemetery, Rt. 62, Danville, Knox Co., OH. [Group Sheet]
