George Austin Remington

In the 1880 Federal Census, George & Henry are farmers in Indianola, Red Willow, NE. Their mother Elizabeth, a widow age 56, is living there with them.

George married Maude Ethel Downing 1 Feb 1889, Stockville, Frontier Co., NE. Maude (daughter of John Pierson Downing and Louisa Gray) was born 1 Feb 1871, Xenia, Hopkins, Nodaway Co., MO; died 24 Dec 1943, Pomona, Los Angeles Co., CA; was buried , Pomona Cemetery, Pomona, CA. [Group Sheet]

1. Hugh Downing Remington was born 30 Sep 1891, Cambridge, Furnas County, NE; died 3 Dec 1973, Central Point, Jackson Co., OR; was buried , Siskyou Memorial Park, Medford, OR.
2. Omar Austin Remington was born 20 Mar 1895, Cambridge, Furnas County, NE; died 4 Sep 1957, Los Angeles, CA; was buried , Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, CA.

Notes:

In the 1860 Federal Census, Austin & Elizabeth are at Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA. Their two sons are there, as well as an orphaned cousin, David T. Remington. Austin's mother, Laura Remington, is next door.

In June 1858 Austin became a member of the Savoy Baptist Church; in 1859 he became a deacon and the church treasurer. In 1861 he became ill and asked to be relieved of his duties. Austin died two years later of consumption (see Lois Remington Smith's manuscript, "Moses Stanford, Minuteman" for more information on this family).

Austin & Elizabeth had an infant son who died 18 Mar 1855 ("A Remington Family History" by Lois Remington Smith, p. E-2).

Austin married Elizabeth "Libby" Elmira Stanford 22 Feb 1854, Rowe, MA. Elizabeth was born 9 Feb 1824, Zoar, Franklin Co., MA; died 1 Jun 1907, Holbrook, NE; was buried , Fairview Cemetery, Cambridge, NE. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

After Austin's death, Elizabeth remained in Massachusetts, trying to make a living for herself and two young sons. In the fall of 1878 they joined a partly of 40 pioneers and moved to Nebraska, where they built a new homestead and her sons eventually married and raised families. In the 1880 Federal Census, Elizabeth is a widow age 56, living in Indianola, Red Willow, NE, with her two single sons, George & Henry, who are farmers.

Elizabeth died in 1907 at the home of her son Henry.

Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Aaron and his family are living in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. With them is his elderly father, Benjamin. Brother James is next door with his family. Also nearby in the same town is (probable) brother Benjamin and his family. Another neighboring family is that of Amos Deming, possibly related to Laura.

Aaron was appointed guardian for the orphaned children of his brother Reuben.

Aaron and his two eldest sons served as deacons at the Baptist Church in Savoy. His brother-in-law, Deacon Amos Deming, served as pastor for 14 years (for more information on this family group, see "A Remington Family History" compiled by Lois Remington Smith).

According to the death record, Deacon Aaron Remington died at age 63 of typhoid fever. His father died later that year at age 94. Their death records are on the same page of the Savoy, MA, death book.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Laura Remington is a widow aged 65, living at Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA. Her son Austin Remington and his family are next to or with her. Amos Deming, Baptist minister age 67, and his family are nearby -- possibly related to Laura.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin is age 88 and living with his son Aaron and family in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. Next door is his son James and family. (Probable) son Benjamin and his family are nearby, too.

According to Boyd Scott Remington's chart, Ben's parents lived in Cummington, MA. That is why I think his wife is Sarah Seamans, based on the marriage data. Otherwise, she married a different Benj. Remington.

The death record at Savoy, MA, says Mr. Benjamin Remington died of old age at 94y 4m 9d.

Benjamin married Sarah "Sally" Seamans 14 Feb 1793, Adams, MA. Sarah (daughter of Aaron Seamans and Lillis Unknown) was born 25 Feb 1766, Rehoboth, MA; died 29 Dec 1827. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Sarah may have been born in Rehoboth, MA (?). At the time of her marriage, she was of Adams, MA.

The marriage intention spells her maiden name as Symonds.

The marriage intention was dated 29 Nov 1792. The original marriage is at Adams, but it was also recorded at Cummington, MA.
