Clemence Battey

According to the Jamestown birth record, Clemence was the 4th daughter of Samson & Dinah Battey. As the wife of Gershom Remington, her name has been given as both Clemence and Catherine. I am making an assumption that Gershom's wife was Clemence Battey, whose birth was recorded in the official Jamestown Proprietors Records, Vol. 1, p. 1. The Jamestown birth record has the name as "Clemence Batty." It seems obvious to me that this is the Clemence who married Gershom Remington, especially since they named a daughter Dinah, and Clemence Battey's mother was named Dinah. I have no further proof of her identity, other than this concurrence of data: names, time, and location.

Notes:

BSR says Gershom married Catherine Clemence on 13 Feb 1713, Jamestown (no source noted). However, in some documents she is referred to as Clemence. Jamestown records identify their children as "of Gershom & Clemens" or Clemence. I have made an assumption that she is Clemence Battey, based on their dates of birth and the given names Clemence & Dinah, found in both the Battey and Remington families.

2. Dinah Remington was born Between 17 Aug 1716 and 1717, Jamestown, RI.
3. Abigail Remington was born 14 Aug 1718.
4. Phebe Remington was born Abt 1720, Jamestown, RI.
5. John Remington was born 7 Feb 1723/24, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Nov 1809, Newport, RI.
6. Mary Remington was born Abt 1725; died Aft 6 Nov 1773.
7. Stephen Remington was born Abt 1730.
8. Gershom Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1740; died Abt Dec 1792, Jamestown, RI.

Notes:

From "Samson Battey and His Descendants" p 17:
"Samson Battey came as early as 1675 or prior," locating at Jamestown. He married Dinah Havens of Jamestown, d/o William & Dionis. She d 16 Nov 1698. On 21 Mar 1711 their dtr Dinah drowned while sailing in the Bay, a few days after her marriage.

Samson married Dinah Havens Abt 1681. Dinah (daughter of William Havens and Dennis Denise Unknown) was born Abt 1661; died 16 Nov 1698, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

The will of William Havens of Portsmouth is dated 13 March 1680, proved 25 Sep 1683. It mentions wife Dennis; 5 sons: John, Thomas, Robert, George, & William: and 8 dtrs: Sarah Tiler, Mary Cook, Ruth Cards, Dinah, Elizabeth, Martha, Rebecca, & Margaret Havens.

I have roughly estimated his date of marriage and the birth years of his children.

William married Dennis Denise Unknown Abt 1645. Dennis was born Abt 1624. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

The book "Samson Battey and His Descendants" gives her name as Dionis. Her husband's will has Dennis.
