    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Phebe are living at Hudson (Ward 1), Columbia Co., NY. With them in the household are their daughters Sarah Jenkins and Phebe A. Moone, and son-in-law Lucius Moore.

They are still there in 1860, when Penelope's name is written as Penela and her birthplace is given as NY. Benj is 73, Penela is 72, and Sarah H. Remington is 42. Lucius Moore is there, but now it appears that his wife is Harriet F.; the Moores have three children.

Benjamin married Penelope Remington 28 Jul 1814, Stanford, Duchess Co., NY. Penelope (daughter of Gershom Remington, Jr. and Mary Martin) was born 19 Oct 1789, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 20 Jun 1873, Hudson, Columbia Co., NY; was buried , Hudson City Cemetery, Columbia Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Phebe's birth is recorded at Nantucket, MA, as 29th, 8th mo. 1786. She is identified as of RI, and the wife of Benjamin Jenkins.

There is also a birth recorded at Nantucket, for Remington Jenkins of RI, 2nd, 9 mo. 1816. Is this a son?

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.) I am assuming that Gershom Remington, Jr. is a son of Gershom Remington, although he could be just a younger Gershom in the community, son of another Remington. He witnessed the 1762 codicil to the will of John Hull, and the 1771 will of John Martin, father of Hannah (Martin) Remington, wife of Benjamin. He also was mentioned as "Uncle Gershom Remington, Jr." in the 1773 will of Gershom Franklin (son of Mary Franklin) who was headed out to sea on a voyage (Gershom, Jr. had a sister Mary who married George Franklin).

The 1777 RI Military Census lists Gershom Remington, age 16 - 50 A, of East Greenwich.

The Newport Mercury of 17 Apr 1784 reported the marriage of Gresham Remington & Mary Hull, widow, at Jamestown. So, this is a second marriage for Mary. One online source refers to her as Mary Martin, which may well be her maiden name.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 5 Jan 1793: "Gersham Remington, d. in Jamestown." I am assuming this notice is for this particular Gershom Remington. Apparently he died of smallpox -- see notice below.

    ID Number T2007.003.005
    Collection Town Records (Jamestown)
"Meeting announcement, handwritten; warrant for town council meeting to announce Gershom Remington has small pox and to discuss methods to prevent spread of the disease; issued by John Eldred, December 19, 1792."

Gershom married Mary Martin 17 Apr 1784, Jamestown, RI. Mary (daughter of William Martin and Eunice Unknown) was born Abt 1750; died Bef 31 Oct 1812, Washington, Dutchess Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Mary Martin was born Abt 1750 (daughter of William Martin and Eunice Unknown); died Bef 31 Oct 1812, Washington, Dutchess Co., NY.

    Notes:

After their marriage, Wager & Mary (Martin) Hull lived in the "Old Hull Place" on Jamestown. Their home was burned by the British soldiers in December 1775. At the same time Mary's father, William Martin, was killed. A few weeks later Wager died, and Mary went to New York City to stay with some of her husband's relatives. She later married Gershom Remington. The newspaper announcement of her marriage to Gershom says she was Mary Hull, widow.

The will of Mary Gage, relict of David Gage, is registered at Dutchess Co., NY (Abstracts of Wills, Administrations and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835; newenglandancestors.org)

In the will she mentiones her daughters Damaris w/o Henry Clapp; Phebe w/o Joseph Doughty; and Sarah Hull; refers to her four youngest children: Hannah Remington, Penelope Remington, Charles Wager Remington, & Mary Remington. Will pvd 31 Oct 1812.

    Children:

    4. Hannah Remington was born Abt 1791.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Gershom Remington was born 3 Dec 1690, Jamestown, RI (son of Stephen Remington and Penelope Parker); died Aft 1736.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
The original birth record at Jamestown reads: "Gershum Remmenton sun of Stephen & Pennelipy 3 December 1690."

Land records show Gershom Remington signing transactions with his wife, Clemence, on 31 Dec 1733. Some genealogists have her name as Catherine. Was Catherine a second wife; or, perhaps simply the name was misread (?).

In 1735 Gershom was Ensign of the Militia for Jamestown, and later was promoted to Lieutenant on the resignation of William Battey; again he served in this position in 1736.

Was there another daughter named Aase or Acie? Here is this listing from the RI Cemetery Database:

    REMINGTON AASE 1722c - 29 NOV 1744 JM002

Gershom married Clemence Battey 13 Feb 1712/13, Jamestown, RI. Clemence (daughter of Samson Battey and Dinah Havens) was born 4 Jul 1695, Jamestown, RI; died Aft Dec 1733. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Clemence Battey was born 4 Jul 1695, Jamestown, RI (daughter of Samson Battey and Dinah Havens); died Aft Dec 1733.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
According to the Jamestown birth record, Clemence was the 4th daughter of Samson & Dinah Battey. As the wife of Gershom Remington, her name has been given as both Clemence and Catherine. I am making an assumption that Gershom's wife was Clemence Battey, whose birth was recorded in the official Jamestown Proprietors Records, Vol. 1, p. 1. The Jamestown birth record has the name as "Clemence Batty." It seems obvious to me that this is the Clemence who married Gershom Remington, especially since they named a daughter Dinah, and Clemence Battey's mother was named Dinah. I have no further proof of her identity, other than this concurrence of data: names, time, and location.

    Notes:

BSR says Gershom married Catherine Clemence on 13 Feb 1713, Jamestown (no source noted). However, in some documents she is referred to as Clemence. Jamestown records identify their children as "of Gershom & Clemens" or Clemence. I have made an assumption that she is Clemence Battey, based on their dates of birth and the given names Clemence & Dinah, found in both the Battey and Remington families.

    Children:
    1. Benedict Remington was born 5 Feb 1714/15, Jamestown, RI; died 22 Nov 1744; was buried , Town Cemetery, Jamestown, RI.
    2. Dinah Remington was born Between 17 Aug 1716 and 1717, Jamestown, RI.
    3. Abigail Remington was born 14 Aug 1718.
    4. Phebe Remington was born Abt 1720, Jamestown, RI.
    5. John Remington was born 7 Feb 1723/24, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Nov 1809, Newport, RI.
    6. Mary Remington was born Abt 1725; died Aft 6 Nov 1773.
    7. Stephen Remington was born Abt 1730.
    8. 6. Gershom Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1740; died Abt Dec 1792, Jamestown, RI.

  3. 14.  William Martin was born Abt 1722 (son of John Martin and Phebe Remington); died Dec 1775, Jamestown, RI.

    Notes:

He may be the William Martin who witnessed the Jamestown wills of David Greene on 21 July 1759, John Hull on 20 Nov 1759 and again the codicil on 30 January 1762, and John Hammett on 9 August 1766.

William married Eunice Unknown Abt 1744. Eunice was born Abt 1725. [Group Sheet]

  4. 15.  Eunice Unknown was born Abt 1725.

    Notes:

Could she have been Eunice Pendleton, mentioned as daughter Eunice Martin in will of Col. Joseph Marin, 1760 Westerly?

    Children:
    1. 7. Mary Martin was born Abt 1750; died Bef 31 Oct 1812, Washington, Dutchess Co., NY.
