Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Philip Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1907, OK (son of Philip Remington and Agnes McGinnes).

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Philip Remington was born May 1876, Oklahoma Indian Territory (son of Philip Halsey Remington and Elizabeth "Lizzie" F. Masters).

    Notes:

The 1880 Federal Census says he was born in "Indian Territory." The 1920 Federal Census says Oklahoma, which by then had become a state.

In 1920, Philip is age 43 and widowed. He has followed in his father's footsteps as a captain in the US military, and is stationed at Camp Gaillard, Panama Canal Zone. His four children and sister-in-law are there, also. Apparently he later married her, because in the 1930 Federal Census at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, she appears as his wife.

Major Philip Remington, s/o late Col. Philip H. Remington, of Hartford, CT, is reported as wounded at age 42 (New York Times 5 Nov 1918).

The following may be about this particular Philip Remington (needs to be confirmed):
    REMINGTON, PHILIP
    Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army
    22d Infantry
Date of Action: October 22, 1905
    Citation:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Philip Remington, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Malala River, Mindanao, Philippine Islands, October 22, 1905. While commanding the leading troop of the advance guard of an expedition against Dato Ali, upon locating Ali's cotta, which was occupied by hostile Moros, Lieutenant Remington courageously dashed forward, leading his men, and engaged the enemy at point-blank range. In a pistol and rifle duel he succeeded in killing Ali with his pistol, but not until one of Lieutenant Remington's own men had been killed by rifle fire from Ali. He then disposed his command, which in a brisk fire fight killed the remaining members of the band of Moros.

  1. 4.  Philip Halsey RemingtonPhilip Halsey Remington was born Abt 1839, CT (son of George Nichols Remington and Charlotte Lavinia Halsey); died 17 Dec 1891, Windsor, CT.

    Notes:

In the 1880 Federal Census, Philip is living with his wife and three children at Leavenworth Military Reservation, Leavenworth, Kansas. The census record is a bit difficult to read, but I have included the names of his wife and children as best as I could make them out.

Philip graduated from the US Military Academy 24 June 1861 and was assigned to the 8th Infantry; age at date of admission on 1 July 1857: 18 y 6 m; state of IL (source: Google Books). "Biographical Register of the Officers and Graduates of the US Military" has more details on his military service; also "Annual Reunion" by United States Military Academy Association of Graduates, p 66, has a brief bio.

After his Civil War service, Philip served with the 19th Infantry in Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and Michigan. Apparently he was not in good health because he had three sick leaves between 1883 and 1889.

He was commanding officer at Fort Davis from 13 Nov to 15 Dec 1889 (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/hh/38/hh38ab.htm).

Note from Randal W. Cooper: "He received his appointment to West Point while he was a resident of Illinois."

Notes from Bob Cuellar: "He entered West Point in 1857 and graduated 1861. He served during the Civil War and the Indian wars. He was commander of Fort Dodge under the 19th US Calvary from 13 Nov 1889 to 15 Dec 1889. He received a medical retirement in 1891 and died that same year on 17 Dec 1891. After his death his wife Lizzie F. Remington sued the government for back pay. She received something like $2,300, which was a lot of money, at the time."

Philip married Elizabeth "Lizzie" F. Masters Abt 1873. Elizabeth (daughter of John C. Masters and Ruby M. Randall) was born Apr 1852, Orange Co., NY; died 19 Jan 1926, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth "Lizzie" F. Masters was born Apr 1852, Orange Co., NY (daughter of John C. Masters and Ruby M. Randall); died 19 Jan 1926, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.

    Notes:

According to an online family tree, her maiden name is Masters (incorrect year of birth). I did find her with that name in the 1860 census as an 8-yr-old child, d/o John C. Masters.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Lizzie Remington is a widow aged 48, living at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. With her are daughter Elisabeth and son Philip.

    Children:
    1. Wolcott Remington was born Oct 1874, Oklahoma Indian Territory; died Aft 1 Jan 1920; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Hampden, Penobscot Co., ME.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  George Nichols Remington was born 15 May 1819, CT (son of George Remington and Betsy Pomeroy Nichols); died Aft 1 Jun 1850.

    Notes:

The source for George's birth date and parentage was Boyd Scott Remington's chart; other information on George, such as his middle name, marriage, and the name of his son, came from Randal W. Cooper. Some additional research of my own has confirmed that their data is correct.

In the 1850 Federal Census, a George Remmington, age 30 b. CT, is living in Peoria, Illinois.

Note from Randal W. Cooper: " . . . information came from a researcher who had a history of Peoria, Illinois. The book told about George Remmington and his hotel, the Remmington House. Since George Nichols Remington was a tavern owner in Windsor, Connecticut in 1848 and 1849, and since George Nichols Remington sold out his Aetna Insurance policy in March of 1849 and was not present in the 1850 Census of Connecticut, it follows that the Illinois George Remmington was apparently GNR."

Addition excerpt from posting by Randal W. Cooper:
"More information has come to light, regarding L. Case's debtor, George Nichols Remington. L. Case was mentioned in a Suffield Bill of Sale dated November 12, 1842. L. Case was said to be a creditor of George N. Remington. The amount owed at that time was $101.18. I have found, through the kind assistance of several researchers, that George N. Remington had moved from Suffield, Connecticut to the city of Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, by 1850, when he was enumerated in the Federal Census there as George Remmington (two "m.s"). In addition, George N. Rem(m)ington purchased a hotel in Peoria in 1853 and changed its name from the Massasoit House to Remmington House. He sold the hotel in 1856. In 1857, George N. Remington's son Philip Halsey Remington
entered West Point Military Academy, having obtained his appointment in Illinois. Philip Remington graduated in 1861 and was in the same class
as George Armstrong Custer. This sheds a little more light on L. Case and his relationship to George N. Remington. I hope to find out when and how George N. Remington paid his debt to L. Case, because that will lead to finding Mr. Remington's departure date to Illinois. If you have any information, please share
your insights with me." (Case mailing list at Rootsweb, 23 Jan 2003)
