Generation: 1

  1. 1.  William H. Remington was born Abt 1866, RI (son of Thomas Henry Remington and Mary Mercy Elizabeth Whitford); died 5 Jan 1890, RI.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Thomas Henry Remington was born Between 1823 and 1825, RI (son of Dexter S. Remington and Ruth Greene); died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

    Notes:

Although his given age varies greatly in the censuses, Thomas probably was born between 1821 and 1825, because in the 1840 census he is likely the male 15 < 20.

Thomas Henry is mentioned in the 21 Oct 1843 will of his grandfather, Benedict Remington. He is "Henry" in the 1850 Federal Census, where he age 27 and a mariner, living with his parents and aunt & uncle in East Greenwich, RI.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Thomas H. & Mary E. Remington are ages 31 & 29, living at Bristol, RI, with their two daughters, Anneta & Ada. Thomas is a seaman.

In 1870 the family is still at Bristol. Thomas H. is 47, Mary E. is 39, and they have three children: Annetta G., William H., & Harriet N. Thomas's occupation is carpenter.

In 1880 they are still at Bristol. Thomas H., a ship carpenter, is 55; Mary E. is 48; two of their children are in the household: William & Hattie N.

Thomas's age is not consistent (est. dob 1823, 1825, 1829); but Mary's is (dob 1831/32).

Thomas married Mary Mercy Elizabeth Whitford 24 Apr 1851, RI. Mary (daughter of Amos Tillinghast Whitford and Nancy N. Clarke) was born 6 May 1830, Charlestown, RI; died 17 Sep 1898, Bristol, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary Mercy Elizabeth Whitford was born 6 May 1830, Charlestown, RI (daughter of Amos Tillinghast Whitford and Nancy N. Clarke); died 17 Sep 1898, Bristol, RI.

    Notes:

Her marriage record and the census data name her as Mary E. (Whitford) Remington. However, in her great-aunt Anna Rathbun's will, she is called Mercy Elizabeth.

    Notes:

One family tree at Rootsweb says they were married in Bristol, RI.

    Children:
    1. Annetta G. Remington was born Abt 1854, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.
    2. Ada W. Remington was born Abt May 1860, RI; died Bef 1 Jun 1870.
    3. 1. William H. Remington was born Abt 1866, RI; died 5 Jan 1890, RI.
    4. Harriet "Hattie" N. Remington was born Abt 1869, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Dexter S. Remington was born Abt 1798, Covenrty, RI (son of Benedict Remington and Sarah Unknown); died 17 Jun 1856, RI.

    Notes:

    In the 1840 Federal Census, Dexter Remington's household at East Greenwich consists of the following: 1 male 15 < 20 (Thomas), 1 male 30 < 40 (probably Dexter himself), 1 female < 5 (daughter b 1836 -1840), 1 female 10 < 15 (Sarah, age 13), 1 female 30 < 40 (probably Ruth).

In the 1850 Federal Census, Dexter & Ruth are living at East Greenwich, RI, where their household also appeared in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. In 1850 the extended family consists of: Warren & Hitty Remington, ages 56 & 47; William Greene, 82 (probably father-in-law); Dexter S. & Ruth Remington, both aged 49; and Henry, 27. I am assuming that Henry is Thomas Henry, mentioned in the will of his grandfather Benedict Remington.

Dexter married Ruth Greene Abt 1822. Ruth (daughter of William Greene and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Between 1801 and 1802, RI; died 25 Aug 1866, East Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Ruth Greene was born Between 1801 and 1802, RI (daughter of William Greene and Elizabeth Unknown); died 25 Aug 1866, East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

Ruth Remington is still living at East Greenwich in the 1860 Federal Census. With her is Almyra Briggs, age 48.

For the time being, I am making an assumption that she is a sister of Mahitable Greene, who married Dexter's brother Warren. Mahitable is a daughter of William & Elizabeth Greene. The death entry for Ruth says she is a daughter of William & Elza Greene. Elza may have been an abbreviation for Elizabeth. This Greene family needs more research.

If Ruth is in fact a daughter of this family, she may have been either a twin to Phebe, or else born in 1802.

    Children:
    1. 2. Thomas Henry Remington was born Between 1823 and 1825, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    2. Sarah E. Remington was born 10 Jan 1827, RI; died 3 Feb 1850; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.
    3. Ruth Dexter Remington was born Abt Jan 1840, East Greenwich, RI; died 8 Sep 1840, East Greenwich, RI.
    4. Olive Ballou Remington was born Abt Sep 1842, East Greenwich, RI; died Jul 1843, East Greenwich, RI.

  3. 6.  Amos Tillinghast Whitford was born 29 Jul 1799, Exeter, RI (son of Benjamin Whitford and Amy Tillinghast); died 27 May 1852; was buried , North Burial Ground, Bristol, RI.

    Notes:

In his grandfather's will, no Amos is mentioned in the list of grandchildren, but Tillinghast is mentioned as a son of Amy. So, I am assuming that Amos's middle initial, T, signified Tillinghast.

Amos's children are all mentioned in the will of Anna (Tillinghast) Rathbun, widow. She was sister of Amos's deceased mother. Anna's will was dated 4 August 1832.

Amos — Nancy N. Clarke. Nancy was born 24 Sep 1802. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Nancy N. Clarke was born 24 Sep 1802.
    Children:
    1. Clarke Whitford
    2. Benjamin Whitford
    3. Sarah Whitford
    4. Ann Whitford
    5. Harriet Whitford
    6. Jane Whitford
    7. Amos Whitford was born Abt 1821.
    8. 3. Mary Mercy Elizabeth Whitford was born 6 May 1830, Charlestown, RI; died 17 Sep 1898, Bristol, RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Benedict Remington was born Between 1757 and 1760; died Abt 1849, East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

I have roughly estimated Benedict's year of birth based on records as noted below.

In the 1810 census, Benedict is living in Warwick. He is listed next to Benjamin Remington. How are they related?

Benedict is living at East Greenwich, RI, in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Censuses. I am assuming he died there, as his will was proved there on 31 March 1849.

"Benedick Remington" is in the 1840 Federal Census as a Revolutionary War pensioner. On the census his age is given as 80. He must be the Benedict Remington "of Coventry" who enlisted in 1778, served in Col. Greene's and Col. Angell's regiments, for a total of about two years in the RI Line. According to the sworn testimony of Obediah Potter of East Greenwich, 21 Aug 1820, this Benedict was crippled in one leg. On 21 Aug 1820, he testified that he was 63 years old, and was of Coventry at that time. He was a basket maker by occupation, and owned some land in Voluntown. (see Rev. War Pension files at NARA or online)

His pension application mentions a wife 58 years old, and also a granddaughter, 7 years old, who is dependent on him for support. Possibly this was Betsey, b 1813, daughter of his deceased daughter Huldah.

Benedict's will, dated 21 Oct 1843, mentions three sons: Warren whose wife is Mahitabel Remington; son George Remington; and son Dexter Remington; also grandson Thomas Henry Remingon and granddaughter Sarah Remington, children of Dexter.

No one seems to know who Benedict's parents are. However, I was able to include him and his sons on the family tree through their connections to the Peirce, Rice, and Whitford families.

My guess is that he may have been a grandson of Jonathan Remington (c1702) & Lorana Arnold (1703), as their children were born in East Greenwich. I have no marriage info for their sons Caleb & Thomas; however, one of them may be Benedict's father.

Alternatively, his possible connection to Coventry suggests that he could be a son of Thomas & Lydia (Collins) Remington of Coventry, who were having their children during that time.

Or, perhaps he is a grandson of Daniel & Anne (Gorton) Remington; very little, if anything, is known about the marriages of some of their children.

Benedict married Sarah Unknown Abt 1785. Sarah was born Abt 1762; died Bef 21 Oct 1843. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Sarah Unknown was born Abt 1762; died Bef 21 Oct 1843.

    Notes:

Sarah's name was obtained from the RI Death Index records of sons Dexter and Warren. She is not mentioned in Benedict's will, so it can be assumed that she had died.

Assuming that she was Benedict's wife when he applied for and received his Revolutionary War Pension, she was age 58 on 22 Aug 1820, when he gave a sworn statement.

    Children:
    1. Huldah Remington was born 17 May 1787; died 7 May 1815.
    2. George Remington was born 10 Mar 1795, RI; died 10 Jul 1876, PA; was buried , Prevost Cemetery, Russell Hill, Wyoming Co., PA.
    3. Warren Remington was born Abt 1796, RI; died 9 Mar 1870, East Greenwich, RI.
    4. 4. Dexter S. Remington was born Abt 1798, Covenrty, RI; died 17 Jun 1856, RI.

  3. 10.  William Greene was born Abt 1768, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.

    Notes:

William is age 82 in the 1850 Federal Census, living at East Greenwich, RI, with Warren & Hitty Remington and Dexter & Ruth Remington.

Could he also be the William Greene, age 93, living at Providence in 1860? He is with Sarah Crapeman (?) age 43 or 63 (?).

Was he William Fones Greene, found in the RI Cemetery Database? (GREENE, William Fones 1768 - 1 Feb 1863 PV003) This Greene family needs more research. One online site has the wife of William Fones Greene as Abby Sheldon, not Elizabeth.

William & Elizabeth may have had another daughter, one named Sophia, b. 1797, d. 8 Nov 1865, md. Mr. Greene. (see RIVR, NS, V. 8, p. 301)

Also, I am not sure that Ruth belongs in this family group. Her death record says her parents are William & Elza. However, Elza may have been an abbreviation for Elizabeth. Also, it was not uncommon for two sisters to marry two brothers (Warren & Dexter Remington).
