    Notes:

In the 1910 Federal Census, Charles & Bertha are living on Broad St., Pawtuxet, Cranston, RI. They are near Bertha's sister Ada and her household, which includes their mother Josephine Remington.

In the 1920 Federal Census, the Golden family is living at 99 Main St., Warwick, RI. Bertha's brother Edgar is living with them.

Charles married Bertha A. Remington 20 Oct 1908, RI. Bertha (daughter of Joseph Fearing Remington and Josephine Celia Hart) was born 1877, RI; died 1946; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

In 1870, although the census was to be as of June 1st, the census was taken on July 11th, shortly after Joseph had gotten married on June 16th. The Hart family is living next door in Cranston, RI, and Joseph & Josephine are each shown in his/her own parents' home, although Josephine is called Josephine Remington.

Joseph & Josephine's family, including their six children, is in the 1880 Federal Census at Cranston, RI, on the east side of Broad St. The youngest son has not yet been named. I believe this must be Lawrence.

Joseph F. Remington and his son E. T. Remington are living in Warwick, RI, in 1910.

From "Death Notices" at RI Historical Society Library: Joseph F. Remington, 66th yr., 5 Aug 1913, at Pawtuxet.

He may have been named for Dr. Joseph Warren Fearing, an esteemed physician for 32 years in Providence. I don't know if there was any family connection.

Joseph married Josephine Celia Hart 16 Jun 1870, Providence, RI. Josephine (daughter of Edwin Hart and Lusealy "Celia" Gorton) was born 1 Feb 1846, Cranston, RI; died 9 Jul 1915; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, RI. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Stacy Waterman Remington was born 21 Oct 1809, Utica, Oneida Co., NY (son of Charles Remington and Alice Unknown); died 27 Nov 1884, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

At the time of his marriage in 1832, Stacy was "of Providence."

Stacey W. Remington is in the Providence City Directory of 1836/37 as a cigar maker, 155 High St.

Stacy W. Remington witnessed the Warwick will of Desire Burton, singlewoman, formerly of Cranston, on 1 Sept 1853. The two other witnesses were Joshua A. Johnson and Joseph G. Johnson. These were both brothers-in-law to Stacy.

In 1850, 1860, & 1870 the family is living at Cranston, RI. In the 1850 Federal Census, Stacy's father-in-law, Freeborn Johnson, age 78, is living with them. Also in the household is Catherine B. Smith, age 18.

In 1870, although the census was to be as of June 1st, the census was taken on July 11th, shortly after Joseph had gotten married on June 16th. The Hart family is living next door, and Joseph & Josephine are each shown in his/her own parents' home, although Josephine is called Josephine Remington.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Stacy is aged 70, widowed, a retired farmer, living with grandson Frank A. Fry and family at 31 Broad St., Providence, RI.

The identity of Stacy's parents, noted in his death record (although not in the RI Death Index), was provided by Linda Mathew, who has researched the Johnsons extensively. According to census data, both of Stacy's parents were born in Rhode Island, so apparently they or their parents migrated to New York State, where Stacy was born. Interestingly, in the 1880 Federal Census, Stacy is living on Broad St., not far from Benjamin W. Remington. However, Ben was born in RI. Is there a close family relationship between these two, or is it just coincidence?

I was able to link him to our family tree through the marriage of his daughter Caroline, and more recently through his wife's family, the Johnsons. I am sure there are other links, also -- such as through the Burlingames.

Stacy's will is dated 19 May 1884. His son-in-law Thomas H. Rhodes is named as Trustee of the estate.

I have not been able to determine why he was named Stacy Waterman Remington, or if there is a family connection to Stacy Waterman born 22 Feb 1791.

Stacy married Ruth Johnson Abt Nov 1832, Providence, RI. Ruth (daughter of Freeborn Johnson and Martha Allen) was born 22 Jul 1809, West Greenwich, RI; died 28 Apr 1871, Cranston, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Ruth Johnson was born 22 Jul 1809, West Greenwich, RI (daughter of Freeborn Johnson and Martha Allen); died 28 Apr 1871, Cranston, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

At the time of her marriage in 1832, Ruth was "of Coventry."

The RI Death Index says she was a daughter of Freeborn & Ruth (not Martha) Johnson.

    Children:
    1. Caroline "Carrie" Augusta Remington was born 8 Sep 1841, RI; died 11 Jun 1924; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI.
    2. Martha Ellen "Nellie" Remington was born 10 Jul 1844, Cranston, RI; died 25 Sep 1910; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., Providence, RI.
    3. 6. Joseph Fearing Remington was born 14 Mar 1848, Providence, RI; died 5 Aug 1913; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, RI.

  3. 14.  Edwin Hart was born 3 Jul 1808, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 25 Aug 1875, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, Edwin & Celia are living in Cranston, RI. next door to Stacy Remington & family.

Edwin married Lusealy "Celia" Gorton 15 Aug 1831, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Lusealy (daughter of John Gorton and Hannah Stone) was born 4 Jul 1808, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 5 Nov 1893. [Group Sheet]

  4. 15.  Lusealy "Celia" Gorton was born 4 Jul 1808, Warwick, Kent Co., RI (daughter of John Gorton and Hannah Stone); died 5 Nov 1893.
    Children:
    1. 7. Josephine Celia Hart was born 1 Feb 1846, Cranston, RI; died 9 Jul 1915; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, RI.
